PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
 
USA Network ordered an eighth season of Suits, and officially confirmed the exits of original cast members Patrick J. Adams and future-wife-of-Prince-Harry Meghan Markle after season 7.
 
Gotham EPs John Stephens and Danny Cannon explore the world of Metropolis in an all-new live-action drama to air exclusively on the upcoming DC-branded direct-to-consumer digital service, operated by Warner Bros. Digital Networks. The project, set in the City of Tomorrow before the arrival of Superman, follows Lois Lane and Lex Luthor as they investigate the world of fringe science. The show received a direct-to-series order for a 13-episode first season.
 
Bravo Media issued a two season, straight-to-series order for scripted anthology Dirty John from Universal Cable Productions. Based on the articles and breakout true crime podcast Dirty John, from Los Angeles Times reporter Christopher Goffard, series tells the story of how a romance caused horrific consequences for an entire family. Season 2 will tell a different self-contained story; details are TK.
 
Podcast 2 Dope Queens, with Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams, is heading to HBO as four themed, hour-long comedy specials. Guests will include Sarah Jessica Parker, Jon Stewart and Uzo Aduba as well as a diverse lineup of stand-ups.
 
History greenlit In Search Of, hosted and executive produced by Zachary Quinto (Star Trek, Snowden). Inspired by the 1970s franchise, the ten-episode unscripted series examines unexplained phenomena from around the world.
 
Atari teamed with producer Scott Sternberg to develop Million Dollar Pong, a game show based on the classic video game Pong, according to Variety. No network has been attached to the project.
 
Poker Central: NBC Sports Group is expanding their programming slate to include additional Poker Central programs, while extending their partnership deal through 2020. The additional programming spans both linear and digital platforms, including the return of last year’s Super High Roller Bowl tournament, the U.S. Poker Open and Poker Masters.
 
 
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
 
Cheap Eats returns to Cooking Channel on Wednesday, March 21 at 10p, as Ali Kahn continues his mission of finding the best breakfast, lunch, snack and dinners for under $35.
 
MTV debuts Winter Break: Hunter Mountain on Tuesday, February 27 at 10:30p. The docu-series, executive produced by SallyAnn Salsano, follows the lives of 8 young people who connect over their need to get away.
 
Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir returns to Family Channel for a second season on Friday, February 16 at 11a with back-to-back episodes. Series centers on masked crusaders working together to save Paris from evil forces.
 
 
COMING UP
 
AXS TV salutes the men and women of America’s Armed Forces with special Guitar Legends For Heroes on Sunday, February 11 at 10p. The concert event is emceed by Trace Adkins and Eddie Trunk and features performances by Richie Sambora, Dave Navarro, Billy Gibbons, Nancy Wilson, Orianthi, Sam Moore, Lindsey Eli, Joe Don Rooney and Robert Randolph.
 
Ahead of the theatrical release of Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 on November 21, ABC is presenting Wreck-It Ralph on Friday, February 16 at 8p. Special takes viewers on an arcade-game-hopping journey.
 
Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey, Paddington) travels to Jerusalem to examine the events leading up to the death of Jesus of Nazareth in Jesus: Countdown to Calvary. Special will be available for syndication to public television stations beginning Thursday, March 1 in time for the Easter holiday (check local listings).

Beth Lacke (Work It) nabbed the female lead and Adrian Martinez (The Blacklist: Redemption) was cast as a series regular in NBC comedy, Guess Who Died….Jeff Pierre (Beyond) will recur in Season 7 of ABC’s Once Upon A Time.
 
 
KIDS CORNER
 
Nickelodeon and the National Football League have teamed to get kids and families ready for Super Bowl LII. Superstar Slime Showdown Super Bowl, a one-hour special hosted by Nick Cannon, current NFL stars, NFL legends and a halftime performance by NFL Juniors’ Brand Ambassador JoJo Siwa (Lip Sync Battles Shorties), bows Sunday, February 4 at 12p.
 
Endemol Shine Group finalized a deal to license short-form series Aliens Love Underpants AND… to Disney Junior US for its linear channels and the DisneyNOW app.
 
 
DIGITAL DATA
 
In its push for greater authenticity, Facebook is banning all cryptocurrency ads. “We’ve created a new policy that prohibits ads that promote financial products and services that are frequently associated with misleading or deceptive promotional practices, such as binary options, initial coin offerings and cryptocurrency,” Rob Leathern, product management director at Facebook, said in a blog post. The policy will be revisited if and when tools are found to detect deceptive ads.
 
Netflix spent $1.1 billion on advertising in 2017, versus $842 million in 2016, according to the company’s 10-K filing. As for 2018? “We expect marketing spending growth to outpace revenue growth,” said the company.
 
Apple is holding off changing the iPhone’s home screen design until 2019, according to Axios. Instead of introducing major iOS updates to apps like Mail and photo features this year, the company will work on performance and reliability, said the report.
 
Prime Video is airing its first ever Super Bowl ad for the August 30 premiere of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan during the Super Bowl LII telecast on Sunday, February 4. The 60-second spot, immediately following the halftime show, centers on hero Tom Clancy and is set to audio from historic political figures, with Bob Dylan song “All Along the Watchtower” performed by Devlin featuring Ed Sheeran.
 
Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video will shift an increasing percentage of their content budgets from licensing third party films and shows to originals. By 2022, the amount invested in originals will triple to $10 billion annually, says a report published by The Diffusion Group. “The Big-3 SVOD players own 60% of TV streaming time,” notes Brad Schlachter, TDG senior advisor and author of the report. “They are looking to grow this share by creating compelling originals that serve both to attract new users and retain existing subscribers even as subscription rates increase.”
 
LightWorkers Media teamed with producer Will Packer (Girls Trip) to executive produce The Baxters. The 12-episode digital series will launch on LightWorkers platform, announced president Roma Downey. Project is based on the Karen Kingsbury bestselling literary series.
 
A.P. Bio bows on Hulu on Friday, February 2. Series follows a former philosophy professor who takes a job teaching AP biology and uses his student to get back at the people who have wronged him.
 
Motor Racing Network is launching a redesigned MRN.com on February 12 to kick off its 49th year of racing coverage. The new site features a new, fully optimized mobile site, which will deliver all of MRN’s daily video shows and live race coverage.
 
Lis Wiehl is joining 24/7 and OTT live streaming trial and law network, LawandCrime.com as an anchor and analyst. Wiehl is a former legal analyst and reporter for Fox News Channel and Professor of Law at New York Law School.
 
Amdocs, provider of solutions to communications and media companies, is acquiring Vubiquity, provider of premium content services and technology solutions, for approximately $224 million. The transaction is expected to completed, subject to the satisfaction of the conditions to closing, before the end of 2Q18.

Shed Media has acquired the rights to Back to Life, created for Israel’s Channel 10 in partnership with Armoza Formats. Docu-series follows patients and their families as they wait for life-saving organ donations.
 
Keshet International is developing Diamonds with Belgian producer, De Mensen. Show centers on an ultra-orthodox Jewish family who work in the diamond industry.

RATINGS
 
Saturday’s episode of A&E’s Live PD was the best performance of the series ever among Total Viewers (2.1 million) and A18-49 (981,000), according to Nielsen.
 
Hallmark Channel made a strong transition from “Countdown to Christmas” to the new year with its third annual “Winterfest” initiative, featuring four consecutive Saturday night original movie premieres in January. Collectively, the movie debuts averaged a 2.6 Household rating and 2.8 million Total Viewers.  “Winterfest” also elevated Hallmark Channel to the #1 network on cable in primetime every Saturday throughout the month.  
 
FOX Business Network delivered its highest rated month ever in Business Day viewers, according to Nielsen, as business news dominated headlines.
 
The Martin Luther King holiday session ending January 21 saw newcomer Daily Mail TV (1.2 Live+SD national Nielsen, up 9% from the week before) rise to its best rating yet. Page Six TV (0.8, steady) remained at its series record high.
 
Dr. Phil (3.5) was up 17% from last year, the most of any first-run strip.  Following Phil were Ellen DeGeneres (2.7, unchanged) and Live with Kelly and Ryan (2.6, up 8%), which matched its season high.
 
Highlighting a third straight week of strong performances for the top magazines were Inside Edition (new season high 3.6%, up 6%), Entertainment Tonight (new season high 3.5, up 3%) and Access (new season high 1.6, up 7%), which also hit a 69-week high in the key W25-54 demo.
