Why the move to July? “This event is so synonymous with summer I thought why not kick off true summer, which is July 4th, with this blockbuster,” said net president Rich Ross.

IN THE NEWS

Viacom’s Nickelodeon group is launching a direct-to-consumer subscription service, but we’ll have to wait until an Upfront presentation in February for the details, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman said on Thursday. The service, not branded Nickelodeon, will target “quite young viewers” who watch on mobile devices.

A Disney princess from a kingdom inspired by Latin cultures will be introduced on Disney Junior’s Sofia the First, then get a province of her own when Elena of Avalor launches in 2016. “Our creative team has delivered a universal story with themes that authentically reflect the hopes and dreams of our diverse audience,” said Nancy Kanter, EVP and GM, Disney Junior Worldwide. Series will air in 25 languages in 154 countries.

Calling all cooks! Bravo’s Top Chef is shopping for new faces for just-renewed season thirteen. For info on open casting calls, go here. Culinary competition is wrapping up season 12 Wednesdays at 9p.

Randy Falco’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Univision Communications Inc. announced it has extended the employment agreement of its president and CEO through January 2018. “By being nimble and opportunistic – internally and externally – and making smart investments, Randy and his team have set Univision apart from its peers,” said Haim Saban, Chairman of Univision Comm.

This gives us paws: Crown Media Family Networks welcomed “Happy, the Dog” as its canine goodwill ambassador, part of the company’s Pet Project initiative to raise awareness of the plight of shelter animals. Happy the Dog will appear in the net’s 2015 Hero Dog Awards show this fall, and serve, along with Happy the Cat, as a star and goodwill ambassador to Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.

VH1 is moving two series to earlier time slots on Wednesdays: Mob Wives gets going at 8p, while Hindsight shifts to 9p beginning February 4.

TV awards show/live event producer Michael B. Seligman, head of Seligman Entertainment, has formed an event services consultation division intended to extend his team’s expertise in televised events to benefit consumer brands, corporations and non-profits. First client: Chrysler, for a Las Vegas dealers meeting in September. Seligman will be busy – he’s supervising producer for the 2015 Academy Awards, coming up Sunday, February 22 on ABC.

Havas EHS and Havas Discovery are merging to form a new brand, Helia. Expansion of agency offerings internationally will include setting up an office in Latin America.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

ABC ordered a pilot for Flesh and Blood, about the mysterious return of a politician’s missing son, from Mandeville Productions and ABC Studios.

CBS gave the green light to two comedies, an untitled project about a group of friends at different points in their lives from Dan O’Shannon (Modern Family) and Peter Warren (Happyland), and Tad Quill’s (Bent) Angel From Hell, as well as drama Limitless, a sequel to the 2011 film, all from CBS Television Studios.

E! is developing a docu-series focused on former Olympian and reality star Bruce Jenner, whose changing appearance has sparked rumors that he may be transgender. Supportive stepdaughter Kim Kardashian told ET, “What Bruce is going through, I think he’ll share when the time is right.”

Ash Atalla and his Roughcut Television inked a two-year deal with HBO. In the works: Atalla is exec producing a comedy pilot starring Sarah Silverman.

Roughcut’s also involved in a remake of its UK comedy Cuckoo, with Lionsgate Television. Pilot order came from NBC. Andy Samberg starred in season one of the BBC Three version.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

CBS and Bell Media struck a long-term content licensing agreement for Showtime in Canada. Hundreds of hours of past, present and future Showtime programming will be available across Bell Media platforms in English and French, including its new premium TV streaming service, CraveTV and pay TV service, The Movie Network. The deal builds on the previous agreement that licensed current Showtime series on pay TV.

UK’s Zig Zag Productions and Relativity Television have agreedto an option deal to bring live event format Built by America Live to UK broadcasters. Viewers vote online on decisions as a home is being built, with one of them winning the finished product in the finale.

El Rey is now available to Dish customers, on channel 253 in DISH programming packages including America’s Top 200, America’s Top 250 and America’s Everything Pak, and Dish Latino packages including Plus, Dos and Max. “We are pleased that Dish understands the importance of providing something truly different for their subscribers,” said net founder and chairman Robert Rodriguez.

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

It’s official: NBC sold all its Super Bowl ad space. It took a while – Fox was sold out in 2014 almost two months before kick-off – but “we came through with flying colors,” said EVP of ad sales for NBCUniversal news and sports groups Seth Winter. The net raked in a record average $4.5 million per 30-second spot, not “the easiest exercise” in his career, acknowledged Winters.

Here’s a twist: Dish Network is using a “Reverse AutoHop” feature on Super Bowl Sunday that will allow customers to skip the game and watch just the commercials. “We’ve decided to flip our user-enabled ad-skipping feature on its head so customers can watch the ads uninterrupted the next day when everyone is talking about them,” said Vivek Khemka, SVP of product management.
