Apple gave a straight-to-series order for a drama series from La La Land’s Damien Chazalle, reports Variety. Chazelle will write and direct, as well as exec produce with Jordan Horowitz and Fred Berger. Studio is Media Rights Capital.
UK-based platform Live Tree Adept ordered the first TV drama funded by Bitcoin, Children of Satoshi, set in the world of cryptography. LiveTree teamed with production company The 21 Million Project for the 6-part series.
Drama American Rust, picked up straight-to-series in November, is not going straight to series at USA after all. Deadline reports the order for the show, co-produced by Platform One Media and Universal Cable Productions, was contingent on landing a big star for the lead, which did not happen.
The CW picked up pilots for Charmed, a “fierce, funny, feminist reboot” of the 1998-2006 series from Jennie Urman (Jane the Virgin), and police drama Dead Inside, following an underachieving beat cop exec produced by Bill Lawrence.
In more reboot news, ABC picked up The Greatest American Hero to pilot. The comedy produced by 20th Century Fox Television and ABC Studios is based on the 1981-83 series starring William Katt, but with a woman from a traditional Indian-American family in the lead role. ABC also ordered a drama pilot, The Fix, co-written and exec produced by former O.J. Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark, focused on a female prosecutor who leaves LA for rural Oregon after losing the biggest case of her career.
Also in reboot mode is CBS, picking up pilots for Cagney and Lacey (1982-1988), produced by CBS Television Studios and MGM Television, and Magnum, P.I. (1980-1988), from CBS Television Studios and Universal Television. In addition, the net ordered pilots for cop drama Chiefs, and comedies Here Comes the Neighborhood, about a nice guy who moves his family into a tough neighborhood; Fam, about a women whose train-wreck half-sister comes to live with her; and Pandas in New York, centered on a family of Indian doctors who try to arrange the youngest son’s life.
Entertainment One struck multi-year overall television first-look deal with producers Joseph Freed and AllisonBerkley’s Marwar Junction Productions (I Am Elizabeth Smart) to develop and co-produce unscripted content. Freed and Berkley launched Marwar in 2012.
CBS Television Studios is developing 8 Fights, a limited series about Muhammad Ali from producer Morgan Freeman and based on Jonathan Eig’s biography, Ali: A Life.
Creative agency Anchor Worldwide announced the launch of its LA-based entertainment division, Anchor Entertainment, with partner Ethan Goldman at the helm and BBC Worldwide Productions as its exclusive production partner. Goldman will serve as President of Entertainment for the company.

In Lexus’ “Long Live the King” Super Bowl spot, Chadwick Boseman plays his role from the upcoming film, Black Panther, in which Boseman will make history as the first Black lead in a Marvel Studios film. The gender and cultural diversity of the creative team behind Lexus’ Super Bowl work, Walton Isaacson, was a key factor in the spot’s development. “Diversity drives innovation so, from concept to execution, our team benefitted from the power of multiple perspectives,” Aaron Walton, co-founder of Walton Isaacson, tells Cynopsis. “We were able to illuminate the rich connections that exist between the film, the vehicle, and the consumer – the way they all relate to power and prestige. There’s a pacing, a swagger, a rhythm, and an attitude that comes from an authentic relationship with the idea of excellence in its many forms – Black Excellence, cultural excellence, innovative and technological excellence.”
