01/29/16: Facebook has smashing Q4; HuffPo partners with Jukin Media on viral video deal; Apple TV launches Watchup news app


Good morning. It’s Friday January 29, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.


saw about as many users as net income dollars in Q4 – and in both cases, the numbers are fairly intimidating. The social media giant announced that it had 1.59 billion monthly active users in the 4th quarter of 2015, up 14% year-over-year. The company also garnered $1.56 billion in net income in Q4, more than double what it netted during the same period last year. (Its total Q4 revenue of $5.84 billion was up 52% year-over-year.) An increase in video consumption certainly can’t be hurting: The company announced that 100 million daily hours of video were streamed on Facebook in Q4.
More from Facebook: The company has officially opened up its live-streaming feature to a mass user-base. Anyone with an iPhone can jump onboard, and the company has said that Android integration is on its way. Watch out, Periscope.



and IFC are about to get real. In a multi-year deal, the streaming service will become the exclusive streaming home for all future documentary releases from the distributor IFC Films and all of its labels. (In addition to the flagship IFC Films brand, the distributor releases films under the Sundance Selects and IFC Midnight brands.) The deal kicks off with King Georges, an IFC doc about French restaurateur Georges Perrier, which will debut theatrical and on-demand February 26 before hitting Hulu this fall. Hulu will also get the streaming rights to Weiner, the new doc about former Congressman Anthony Weiner’s quixotic run for NYC mayor, following its upcoming run on Showtime.
The Huffington Post is going viral. Jukin Media, a company that’s made its fortune by building a formidable library of licensed viral videos, has formed a content partnership with the online media brand. Jukin will now dredge up user-generated viral clips from around the world to be used on HuffPo and its various verticals.
Any iteration of Stretch Armstrong that doesn’t let you physically tug on the strongman’s arms is bound to invite skepticism. Still, an animated show does sound like fun. Netflix has picked up an original series based on the famously pliable action figure, set to bow in 2017. The series comes from Hasbro Studios. Meanwhile, Netflix picked up the animated series Lalaloopsy and the live-action drama The Greenhouse. Learn more about the shows here.
Canella Response Television, a company specializing in infomercial TV production, has acquired Media Properties Holdings. MPH owns the short-form direct response company RevShare, the ad engagement and monetization unit Lead Generation Technologies, and the programmatic TV advertising company AdMore. (AdMore, which has access to over 1,700 national and local TV affiliates, recently completed a deal with the programmatic ad tech company Rubicon Project to add more inventory to its platform.)  “This new combination offers the most comprehensive solution to long-form advertisers on how to also use short-form and programmatic, as well as for short-form advertisers who now have a new conduit to expand into long-form in a very cost-efficient and effective way,” said Brendan Condon, President of MPH, in an email to Cynopsis Digital. “It extends the breadth and depth of the critical relationships that both MPH and Cannella have with top agencies and advertisers, not to mention broadcast stations, cable networks and systems, and other critical partners.

Cord-cutters need news too. Watchup, a startup that aggregates content from 160 news partners (including CBS News, CNN, and Fox News Channel) is now available on the AppleTV. (The news was initially reported by Variety.) The streaming video app allows users to individualize their news content, zeroing in on the types of news they’d like to receive by selecting areas of interest and liking or disliking specific news reports.  
This means war. As Cynopsis noted yesterday, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has proposed a plan requiring TV distributors to allow independent manufacturers to create devices that can unencrypt shows, blending pay TV programming with streaming content. The plan is sure to set in motion a fierce fight between tech and cable companies. Corporations such as Comcast and AT&T have already forcefully opposed the proposal. There’s a new product for gaming fans who simply can’t settle for a one-and-done live-stream. Plays.tv, the video-capture service from Raptr, is introducing a new  Google Chrome extension to allow users to easily capture video instant replay of live-streamed broadcasts on Twitch, the Amazon-owned live-streaming service for gamers.
Snapchat wants following other users to be a snap. To that end, the company has launched profile URLS that deeplink directly into its app. That should make it much easier to follow friends and celebs. Every user’s url follows the same framework: http://www.snapchat.com/add/username. Simple enough. Snapchat confirmed the new features to TechCrunch.
YouTube one, German performing artists zero. Google’s video-sharing site prevailed in a German court in a legal dispute with Gema, a local performing rights organization. Gema unsuccessfully argued that YouTube should have to pay anytime its users watched music videos featuring Gema-represented artists.

Previously, Soares was CEO of Distribber, a digital film self-distribution site that GoDigital has owned since last year. GoDigital has also named Kevin Iwashina, Founder and President of Preferred Content, as Vice Chairman of the company’s board.

We’re long past the era when Super Bowl ads have to be watched, you know, during the Super Bowl. Shock Top’s newest big game spot, which just found its way to YouTube, features actor and comedian T. J. Miller. If you’ve seen Miller on HBO’s Silicon Valley, you know that he’s incapable of not being funny. But here, somehow, he’s nearly outdone by an anthropomorphic draught handle.
