Yesterday, AOL premiered two new series: AOL Rise and That’s Racist. Hosted by Mari White (ESPN), AOL Rise is a news entertainment show consisting of two-minute segments at 6a, 7a, 8a and 9a every weekday on rise.aol.com. “AOL Rise was born from the results of a recent AOL Morning Rituals Research study…[which found] 85% of consumers use their smartphone before leaving bed in the morning and 22% use social media and 12 percent get the news,” the AOL blog post reported. That’s Racist is hosted by comedian and actor Mike Epps, and explores stereotypes often used in comedy and society.
Amazon ordered the new pilot Casanova, executive produced by Stu Zicherman (The Americans) and Ben Silverman (Marco Polo). The pilot for the potential series will focus on a lesser-known part of the legendary lover’s life: his two-decade exile from Italy, prison break, and return to Paris. Amazon recently released 13 new pilots as part of its Prime member program, on which viewers can vote.
Oculus VR debuted its first short film at the Sundance Film Festival yesterday. Called Lost, the flick was directed by Saschka Unseld (Toy Story 3) and allows viewers’ actions to determine how long they will stay in the five-minute experience. Facebook acquired the virtual reality company for $2 billion in July last year.
The Orchard snagged distribution rights to the comedy The Overnight. Starring Jason Schwartzman, Taylor Schilling and Adam Scott, The Orchard bid more than $1 million after the film premiered on Sundance. Jay and Mark Duplass, who recently landed a movie deal with Netflix, produced the film with Naomi and Adam Scott.
Adam Sandler’s movie deal with Netflix is taking shape: the first of the four films, Ridiculous 6, will star Taylor Lautner (Twilight), Nick Nolte (Gracepoint), Blake Shelton (The Voice) and comedian Whitney Cummings. Additionally, Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions regulars such as Steve Buscemi, Rob Schneider, Dan Aykroyd, Will Forte, and Terry Crews will make appearances. Production starts next month.
In more Netflix news: actor David Tennant (Doctor Who) will join new Marvel series Jessica Jones. The cast currently includes Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad) and Mike Colter (American Horror Story). The 13-episode show will be released on the streaming service later this year, along with other Marvel series Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
Revolt TV chose Vubiquity to provide multi-platform VOD services for the network. Vubiquity will bring 40 hours of SD and HD VOD content to Revolt TV affiliates, including music videos, interviews Revolt Live episodes, documentaries and news specials. The new VOD service will debut on Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Verizon FiOS this month.

Imagine Communications acquired RGB Networks, a multiscreen video delivery platform. The move will presumably enhance the company’s TV Everywhere portfolio. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Topps Company appointed Steven Chiang to the Board of Directors. Previously, Chiang was Executive Vice President of Games at game developer Zynga.
Jessica Lichtenfeld joined Three as Senior Strategist. Most recently, she was Director of Product Analytics for E-Poll Market Research, and also spent eight years in research-related roles at Viacom.

The three clips introduce the #MakeItHappy hash tag that will premiere on Feb. 1 with the Coke commercial. In addition, four more longer videos will debut this week, featuring teens who experienced cyber bullying or those who are devoted to spreading positivity online (the Kid President will make an appearance in one).
