IN THE NEWS

Following Facebook’s publisher update aimed at curtailing the spread of fake news stories, Rupert Murdoch stepped in with a suggestion of his own. In a statement, the News Corp. executive chairman said there is still a serious lack of transparency – and If Facebook wants to recognize “trusted” publishers it should pay those publishers a carriage fee similar to the model adopted by cable companies. “The publishers are obviously enhancing the value and integrity of Facebook through their news and content but are not being adequately rewarded for those services,” said Murdoch. “Carriage payments would have a minor impact on Facebook’s profits but a major impact on the prospects for publishers and journalists.”

Looking to create strong family-friendly viewing on Sundays beginning March 11, NBC is airing its annual 3-hour special, American Ninja Warrior: USA Vs. the World at 7p, followed by the season 2 premiere of Timeless. Epix is reviving The Contender, set to start production in 2018 with an anticipated debut later this year. MGM Television is producing with Paramount Television. “Boxing belongs on premium pay television and there is no better home for The Contender than Epix,” said producer Mark Burnett, president of MGM Television and Digital. The elimination-style competition aired on NBC from 2005-2009.

Natalie Portman will make her second trip to Saturday Night Live as host on February 3. Portman will be joined by first-time musical guest Dua Lipa.
