.Should American Idol contestants start shaking in their boots? Simon Cowell, who left the singing competition in 2010, is in talks with Fox. “What we are exploring is an overall deal where he would become an internal production pod on the reality side,” said Fox Television Group chairman Dana Walden at TCA.
Walden’s fellow Fox TV chairman Gary Newman didn’t gloss over Fox’s disappointing numbers this season. “We are well aware we’re the fourth place network and our ratings are challenged,” said Newman, addressing reporters at TCA. “We know it’s going to be an uphill battle to turn this network around, and there’s only one way to do it: put your head down, do the hard work, get in business with the best talent, support their visions, focus on one time period at a time, and slowly, with a little bit of luck, our team will be able to turn this network around.”
NBC plans to release digital viewing projections along with daily ratings projections. “Live same day is pretty much irrelevant and will only become more irrelevant as time goes on and some of these long-tail and digital numbers become more relevant,” NBCUniversal president of research and media development Alan Wurtzel said at TCA. Digital data will include live viewing and Live+7.
Eva Longoria’s ready for primetime again. Comedy Telenovela, from the Desperate Housewives alum’s Universal Television-based UnbeliEVAble, scored a straight-to-series 13-episode order from NBC, with Longoria set to star.
Meet the new boss: Corie Henson has been named the new EVP of alternative entertainment for Fox, replacing Simon Andrae. On the job since October 2013, Andrae was in charge during the brief, expensive run of poorly rated reality show Utopia; it was announced he will transition into a producing role. Henson had been EVP of unscripted television at Electus.
A year after announcing a Bill Cosby project at NBC, NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt faced reporters at TCA wondering what took so long to scuttle the sitcom as the comedian’s sex scandal widened. “While over the years, we’d heard some of those accusations and we knew there were a couple of settlements and what not…it didn’t seem to be the sort of thing that was critical mass,” said Greenblatt. “When we realized that there seemed to be so much more of it.… when that many people come out and have similar complaints and it becomes such a tainted situation, there was no way that we could move forward with it.” As for whether NBC would work with Cosby again, Greenblatt said it’s “safe to say” the comedian’s days at the net are over.
CBS and the NFL reached an agreement for Thursday Night Football for the 2015 season, with an additional year at the NFL’s option. CBS will broadcast the first eight games, simulcast on NFL Network. NFL Network will exclusively televise eight games in the run-up to the playoffs. The mix of games will include 14 on Thursday nights and two late-season games on Saturday. “The NFL continues to be the best premium content in the business,” said Les Moonves, CEO of CBS Corp., “and we look forward to another year of our expanded partnership in 2015/16, a season that will culminate with Super Bowl 50 on CBS.”
The late actor Edward Herrmann’s final project was narrating PBS documentary Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies. Director Barak Goodman told reporters at TCA that after Herrmann collapsed on the first day, he revealed that he was suffering terminal brain cancer. But he forged on. “He did a magnificent job,” said Goodman. “I can’t tell you how hard he pushed to get this right.”
FX Networks CEO John Landgraf did some horn-tooting at TCA, using critics’ 2014 top ten lists to make the case that “HBO and FX absolutely dominated the race for quality in television…the race for the best in TV is really only a competition between two channels.” Acknowledging the net’s other “very good and formidable competitors,” the exec nevertheless maintained, “it’s just the reality that FX has broken well out of that pack.”
Anchor Jim Clancy left CNN after engaging a Twitter debate the day the terror attacks on Charlie Hebdo in which he suggested Israel and Zionist propaganda were partially responsible for the tragedy. Clancy had been with the news net for almost 34 years. “As I reflect on all of the great adventures and achievements of the past, I wish you great success in the future,” he said in a memo to colleagues.
Asked at TCA if American Idol was planning a crossover with Empire, the Fox drama set in the music industry that airs after Idol Wednesdays at 9p, exec producer Trish Kinane enthused, “We’d love to do something if it’s organic and works for both of us.” Added Empire star Terrence Howard later, “It would stupid not to.”
Would you tune into an American Idol/Empire crossover? Vote in the new Cynopsis poll.
There’s no confusing Allegiance with FX’s The Americans, said exec producer/director George Nolfi at TCA about the two spy dramas focused on Russian cells living undercover in the U.S. “Watch one or two episodes and its pretty clear we’re going in a different direction,” noted Nolfi of his NBC series, launching Thursday, February 5 at 10p. “This is fundamentally a family drama about people who do not want to be spies.”
Also making the case that his upcoming show covers new ground was Peter Horton, an exec producer on NBC drama Odyssey, about a female soldier, a lawyer and a political activist show who stumble on an international conspiracy. Horton said at TCA that while he enjoys dramas like Homeland, “It’s not a cop show, it’s not an FBI show, it’s not a spy show. It’s about three ordinary people doing extraordinary things.”
Fox News Channel issued an apology during Saturday’s Fox Report, after supposed terrorism expert Steven Emerson drew criticism for a January 10 interview on Justice With Judge Jeanine during which he said UK’s Birmingham was a “totally Muslim” city, where non-Muslims “simply just don’t go.” (Emerson is “clearly an idiot,” Prime Minister David Cameron later told ITV News.) “We have made some regrettable errors on air,” said anchor Julie Banderas. Judge Jeanine Piro also apologized on her show.

The A18-49-targeting brand will include a mix of contemporary off-network sitcoms and movies. Initial agreements with ABC Owned Television Stations and The E.W. Scripps Company will make LAFF available in over 35 percent of the country so far.
Saying that LAFF will be “an excellent addition to our subchannel lineup," Rebecca Campbell, president of the ABC Owned Television Station Group added that while Live Will Network will end in syndication, it will continue as the D2 channel for the eight ABC owned stations. "We are committed to keeping Live Well Network up and running in our own markets, so that we can continue to provide unique local programming and pursue corporate synergy opportunities," said Campbell.
NATPE 2015 got off to a great start with a poolside cocktail party at the Thompson hotel on Collins avenue just steps from the conference headquarters at the Fontainebleau hotel. The rum drinks were flowing as execs from all the major tv entities mingled and ate paella and pulled pork. Stay tuned for more news and updates in tomorrow’s issue.
