COMING UP

It’s been a decade since those fun-loving kids from East High showed the world “we’re all in this together” in Disney Channel original movie High School Musical. Castmates Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman will reunite to celebrate the milestone during a telecast of the movie Wednesday, January 20, at 8p on Disney Channel. The group taped nostalgic interstitial segments; Zac Efron will join the telecast via a pre-taped message to fans. Additionally, Radio Disney‘s Ernie D interviewed the cast, to be seen during a “Radio Disney Insider” presented Thursday, January 21 on Disney Channel and the Radio Disney app. The movie delivered 7.7 million total viewers when it debuted on January 20, 2006.

RFD-TV and The Weather Channel are partnering to deliver weather forecasts to farmers and ranchers via a new tool to assist those involved with production agriculture. The new daily feature combines RFD-TV’s knowledge of the variety and needs of worldwide agriculture with The Weather Channel’s technology and production abilities. The segment will air on RFD-TV’s Market Day Report, as well as on the nightly broadcasts of Rural Evening News on both coasts, and throughout prime time programming.

NEW SERIES

NBC set Sunday, March 13 at 8p as the premiere date for alternative series Little Big Shots. The comedy is exec-produced by Ellen DeGeneres and Steve Harvey, who will also host. Series pits Harvey going toe to toe with “some of the smallest performers with the biggest talent,” ranging from a 4-year-old basketball phenom to a 5-year-old reincarnation of Bruce Lee. Jeff Kleeman, Gerald Washington and Robin Ashbrook also serve as exec producers; Alison Holloway is co-executive producer for the series, from Warner Horizon Television, East 112th Street Productions and A Very Good Production.

A quick-witted tween uses her inventions to navigate life in new Disney Channel series Stuck in the Middle, which bows with a preview episode Sunday, February 14 on the network. The show, which stars Jenna Ortega (Jane The Virgin), will begin airing in its regular time slot on Friday, March 11 at 9p. Disney Channel will precede the preview ep in February with the net’s first-ever airing of feature film Frozen, at 7p.

CASTING

Boris Kodjoe (Soul Food) joined CBS medical drama Code Black in a recurring role. Beginning Wednesday, February 3, Kodjoe will portray Dr. Will Campbell, a suave surgeon whose surgical skills and personal charm are only outweighed by his ego.

NATPE NEWS

Keshet International acquired worldwide distribution rights (excluding China, Hong Kong and Macau) to Korean romantic comedy You Will Love Me from production company JIDAM. Keshet will launch the finished show at NATPE.

GRB Entertainment is shopping crime documentary Nelson Serrano: I’m Innocent this week. The doc was filmed in Ecuador and in the US, and tells the story of Nelson Serrano, an immigrant businessman who was kidnapped from his home country of Ecuador by a Florida state attorney violating his human rights, convicted of murdering four people in Florida without any evidence. The film documents the 13-year struggle for justice, awaiting a final Florida Supreme Court judgment.

Busy at NATPE this week is Eric Turpin, looking for something special for the Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network. HITN’s new GM talks about strategies for reaching Hispanic audiences in the latest Cynsiders.

TCA TALK

PBS will be diving deeper into politics, culture and space this year. The company announced at TCA a strategic partnership to share news content with NPR for its coverage of the Presidential election. It also previewed 16 for ’16, a docu-series that spotlights “unforgettable” Presidential and VP candidates whose dramatic campaigns earned a place in the history books. Sarah Palin, Gary Hart, Michael Dukakis, Geraldine Ferraro and Howard Dean are among those in the spotlight. Series, produced by OZY Media, will air in 16 half-hour weekly eps leading up to the presidential election in November.

Also upcoming on PBS: Time Inc. partnership A Year In Space, a two-parter featuring astronauts Scott and Mark Kelly that launches on March 2. Additionally, PBS and National Geographic Channels International commissioned six-part science series Genius By Stephen Hawking. Series, from production company Bigger Bang, will be presented and narrated by the renowned theoretical physicist who in each ep will challenge people to channel the greatest scientific minds to solve some of humanity’s most enduring questions. Headed to PBS’ Great Performances in fall 2016 is Hamilton’s America, a feature film doc that pulls back the curtain on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway sensation.

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

Turner Research shared findings on the habits and media consumption of Plurals and Millennials last week in NY. Among key insights, gathered from multiyear research studies commissioned in partnership with Warner Bros.:
For Plurals, born after 1997:
* This generation is hardwired for choice and control. They demand full control over their experiences, including choice of content, choice of platform and the power to go deeper, and the brands that are successful among this generation are the ones who understand and feed this demand.
*  Provide them with ways to be a fan as they age. Brands need to provide a variety of opportunities for plurals to connect with their brands, and then empower them with the tools to express their fandom or relationship with them.
*  Never go dark. Feeding this insatiable need for content wherever and whenever plurals demand it, it’s imperative for brand owners to constantly refresh their products and content offerings.
(Research on plurals was provided by Insight Kids, a division of Insight Strategy Group)

Regarding Millennials, Turner research uncovered four subsets of the demo: Student, Stable (working with no kids and not enrolled in school), Parent and Flex (those not in any other life stages). Other insights include:
* Television is an integral part of life across all millennial life stages, whether it’s live, time-shifted viewing or streaming video.
*  Branding is more important than marketing among millennials of all life stages.
(Research on millennials life stages was provided by the Frank N. Magid Associates and included a nationally representative online survey of 2,000 men and women 18-39 years old)

Showtime Networks is offering Spotify users the chance to upgrade to a complimentary three-month premium membership under the new promotion “Billionaire Status.” The offer is timed coincide with the series premiere of Showtime drama Billions, which debuted Sunday, January 17 at 10p. Winners, selected at random, will receive an email with instructions on how to activate the free upgrade, in addition to information about the new series.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

Toei Animation launched distribution of the remastered versions of the studio’s animated series Dragon Ball Z and Saint Seiya in Latin America, with both Ecuador and Nicaragua snapping up the newly remastered Dragon Ball Z and Nicaragua licensing Saint Seiya.

Australia network Seven acquired interactive TV series ZooMoo for its broadcast channel, 7TWO. Series will air at 7a weekdays beginning Tuesday, February 16.

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

CBS Corp. signed an affiliation agreement with Media General for its station WNCN-TV in Raleigh, NC. Beginning Feb. 29, 2016, WNCN-TV will switch from an NBC affiliate to a CBS Television Network affiliate, delivering CBS programming such as The Big Bang Theory and all three NCIS series.
