Katie Couric will co-host the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics. “During my years at NBC, I loved to cover the Olympics,” said the former Today host. Couric will be sharing duties with Mike Tirico, who succeeds long-timer Bob Costas. During the Games, Couric will contribute commentary and interviews. As for how protests that might occur during the Olympics will be covered, “We never shy away from anything that’s newsworthy,” Couric said in a conference call with journalists, adding decisions would be made on a case-by-case basis.
Libby Leist has been promoted from senior producer to executive producer at NBC’s Today, replacing Don Nash. In a memo to staff, NBC News chairman Andrew Lack said that Nash, a 23-year veteran at the network, had been offered a number of other roles and “we hope he’ll stay in the family.” Speaking of family, in his own note, Nash said, “The time has come for me to step away from Today and be a better dad to my two beautiful girls. They are what matter to me most.”
WYNW’s Zachary Kiesch has joined ABC News as a correspondent based in New York. Kiesch, nominated for an Emmy in 2016 for a report on the relationship between communities of color and the police, has often focused on issues like criminal justice reform, education and housing issues.
With 3 new markets, Tribune Broadcasting’s multicast net Antenna TV is now cleared on 135 affiliates and reaches 86% of U.S. homes. Antenna, of course, is where you can get nostalgic with the likes of Dennis the Menace, Father Knows Best and Three’s Company.

Grey’s Anatomy’s Ellen Pompeo (Grey’s Anatomy) signed a new 2-year deal with ABC Studios, paving the way for a renewal of the medical drama for seasons 15 and 16. As part of the agreement, reportedly worth $20 million per year, Pompeo becomes a producer for Grey’s and a co-exec producer on its upcoming untitled spin-off.
Endeavor Content snatched the rights to Michael Wolff tell-all Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, with the aim of turning it into a TV series. Wolff will exec produce and Two Cities Television head Michael Jackson will produce.
Lionsgate is expanding its relationship with film producer Cassian Elwes (Dallas Buyers Club) with a first-look deal for Elwes to develop and produce scripted and unscripted series for TV and streaming platforms.
IDW Entertainment added writer and producer Barry O’Brien (Castle, CSI: Miami) as writer and showrunner for a psychological crime series in development based on Jonathan Kellerman’s Alex Delaware book franchise.

Syndicated game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and viral video show RightThisMinute were renewed for 2018-19 on ABC Owned Television Stations. The shows are among 4 of 30 nationally syndicated first-run strips that have seen ratings increases this year.
Fast N’ Loud star Aaron Kaufman is behind the wheel for new Discovery series Shifting Gears with Aaron Kaufman, focused on vehicle builds. Premiere date: Monday, March 5 at 10p.
Car customization entrepreneur Ryan Friedlinghaus returns for a new season of Inside West Coast Customs, launching Tuesday, January 23 at 9p.
NATPE NOTES
Traditional TV bundles may be evolving, but they’re not going away, said Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra during a keynote conversation at NATPE. “The majority of the marketplace is using cable or satellite. I don’t see that going away anytime soon,” said the exec. “If you can get the NFL exclusively, without buying all the other stuff, you’ll see a change.”
Telemundo International Studios unveiled its first production, with a screening of El Recluso (The Inmate) at Miami Beach’s Eden Roc Hotel. The 13-episode prison thriller will be available for syndication and is slated to premiere in the U.S. on Telemundo later in the summer. “It is greatly rewarding to see our first production meet the high standards that we set for ourselves when we founded Telemundo International Studios,” said Marcos Santana, head of Telemundo Global Studios.
Tribune Broadcasting president Larry Wert, on the Station Summit panel, said when it comes to deregulation that leads to consolidation, there’s a lesson in radio. After deregulation in the 1990s, “They self-created problems by de-localizing a bit,” said Wert. “I hope our industry looks hard at that. There are benefits to all different sizes…I don’t think there’s just one way, to smash one together.”
Univision Communications and Grupo Televisa announced the launch of the first-ever TV pilot initiative to nurture the development of new original scripted and unscripted series by global independent producers. The goal of the TV pilot program, which had over 100 TV projects submitted in its first phase, is to broaden the content pipeline and represent viewers’ lifestyles, reality and passion points.
Sony Pictures Television announced a distribution agreement with Tegna to handle distribution and national barter advertising for Tegna’s shows, including Daily Blast Live, Sister Circle and Sing Like a Star. “It’s a one of a kind agreement, where Tegna and Sony Pictures Television each bring distinct strengths to the new partnership,” said Robert Sullivan, Tegna’s SVP, programming.
Fox Television Stations renewed Page Six TV for a season 2. “We expect growth this year, and certainly in year 2 as well,” said Frank Cicha, SVP of programming for Fox Television Stations, of the show, which utilizes resources from Fox relatives the New York Post, Endemol Shine North America, Fox stations and Twentieth TV.
Kew Media Group concluded new drama deals across Latin America, for over 350 hours of programming, and All3Media inked a deal with Discovery Networks Latin America that brings over 130 hours of factual content to the region.

YouTube has set guidelines to improve its ability to identify creators who make positive contributions to the community and drive ad revenue to them, and away from “bad actors,” wrote YouTube chief content officer Neil Mohan and chief business officer Robert Kyncl in a blog post. The video site said human moderators would review every upload from creators in its Preferred program, and is enforcing stricter rules about which channels are eligible for monetization in its basic Partner program. “These higher standards will also help us prevent potentially inappropriate videos from monetizing, which can hurt revenue for everyone,” wrote Mohan and Kyncl.
Thirty Five Media, owned by NBA star Kevin Durant and his business partner Rich Kleiman, is aiming high with YouTube. The company will work with athletes and the YouTube team to help sports stars launch their own channels, as well as create new sports programming as a development partner. They’re off to a good start: Thirty Five’s first YouTube project, Durant’s channel, has gained over 21 million views and over 580,000 subscribers.
Digital media and production company RAZE, founded by Emiliano Calemzuk, Sofia Vergara and Latin World Entertainment founder Luis Balaguer, is moving into production with original series Catrina, la Santa Muerte for Netflix, and has set up scripts in development at Hulu (Mi Hermanastro) and TNT (Black Veil). “We continue working to develop and produce original content that changes the narrative on how Latin-centered stories are told,” said Mari Urdaneta, SVP and chief content officer.
HGTV launched a bot on Facebook Messenger. Chat bot/design assistant “Hazel” will guide users through trending HGTV content, photo galleries, DIY projects and more.

Crackle released 6-minute The Snatch Virtual Reality Experience as it gets ready to launch production of season 2 of the crime drama in Spain. Viewers are set in the middle of a safe-cracking diamond heist featuring cast members.

RATINGS
Many of the top shows in syndication started the new year right. Dr. Phil (3.2) was up 23% the week of January 1 versus the week prior even though it was still in reruns, and new episodes of Ellen DeGeneres (2.6) gave the show a 30% boost. Freshman Daily Mail TV rose 10% to match a season high 1.1, and Entertainment Tonight was up 22% to tie with Inside Edition, up 10%, with 3.3.
Sunday’s second episode of the current season of Food Network’s Worst Cooks in America posted a 1.0 A25-54 rating (850K IMP), representing a 12% increase versus last year and the best showing for the series since January 2016.
Fox Business Network finished the second week of 2018 with 252,000 total viewers in Business Day. Additionally, FBN scored 5 of the 6 top rated programs of the week, with Lou Dobbs Tonight as most watched business program with 374,000 total viewers.
Host Sam Rockwell and musical guest Halsey (plus a very interesting news week) brought NBC’s Saturday Night Live an average 7.2 million viewers, a season high. Among A18-49, the show scored a 1.91/9 rating.
The week of January 8, UniMas increased its audience during primetime among total viewers 2+ by 13% (to 778,000), A18-49 by 6% (to 341,000) and A18-34 by 5% (to 132,000) versus the same week last year.
