IN THE NEWS

CNN fired back at Donald Trump yesterday after the president-elect, in his first press conference in six months, refused to answer questions from CNN senior White House correspondent Jim Acosta. “Your organization is terrible…you are fake news!” charged Trump, following the news net’s report that intelligence officials briefed Trump about having compromising information about him. Said CNN in a statement, “We are fully confident in our reporting. It represents the core of what the First Amendment protects, informing the people of the inner workings of their government; in this case, briefing materials prepared for President Obama and President-elect Trump last week. We made it clear that we were not publishing any of the details of the 35-page document because we have not corroborated the report’s allegations. Given that members of the Trump transition team have so vocally criticized our reporting, we encourage them to identify, specifically, what they believe to be inaccurate.”

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith weighed in on the CNN contreTrump, siding on the side of his cable rival. “Though we at Fox News cannot confirm CNN’s report, it is our observation that its correspondents followed journalistic standards,” Smith said. “Neither they, nor any other journalists, should be subjected to belittling and delegitimizing by the president-elect of the United States.”

Meanwhile Buzzfeed, called a “failing pile of garbage” by Trump during the press event because the site actually had posted the unsubstantiated contents of the Trump material, immediately started offering limited edition “failing pile of garbage” t-shirts, bumper stickers and garbage cans for sale.

It was Fox’s turn at the winter TCA tour, and the net started its executive session with the news that Empire, on spring hiatus until March 22, was renewed for a fourth season. The hit drama is not only the number one broadcast drama among A18-49, it boasts a total multi-platform audience of 16 million total veiwers, up 82 percent versus Live+SD.

Fox is reviving game show Love Connection, with Andy Cohen (Watch What Happens Live) taking over where Chuck Woolery left off as host. Mike Fleiss (The Bachelor) is exec producer. “I was a huge fan of the original Love Connection,” said Cohen, “and hosting the new version allows me to do one of the things I love most: meddling in people’s personal lives.” Love Connection will be produced by Next Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Television and Telepictures Productions.

Fox’s interactive game show from Mark Burnett, Beat Shazam, which got a straight to series order in August, now has a host: Jamie Foxx. Slated for a summer premiere, the show, created by Jeff Apploff (Don’t Forget the Lyrics), is produced by Apploff Entertainment and MGM Television.

The X-Files may be back – again. While there’s been talk that the Fox drama, revived for a 6-episode run last season, would return, “We hope to be able to announce something shortly,” said Fox Entertainment president David Madden at TCA.

Soft ratings have kept Fox freshman Pitch and The Exorcist from season 2 orders, but stronger delayed viewing is keeping the possibility alive. “We can’t make a decision yet,” said Madden. As for Wayward Pines’ chances to make it to season 3, the series “is not canceled, but it will not be on this summer,” said Fox chairman Gary Newman. “It’s possible you’ll see Wayward at some point back on Fox. But we’re focusing a little more heavily on scripted this summer.” Better news for new comedy The Mick, which had 4 episodes tacked to its order, for a total of 17.

The FCC approved the $4.6 billion acquisition of Media General by Nexstar, which plans divestitures of seven of its TV stations to comply with TV ownership rules. The Justice Department approved the deal in September, on the condition the stations are sold, leaving the company with a combined reach of 38.9 percent of U.S. households, just under the 39 percent cap.

Alan Wurtzel, NBCUniversal’s president of research and media development, is transitioning to an advisory role at the company. “In his more than 40 years in television, Alan has pioneered research and measurement initiatives that have not only changed our company, but have also had a large impact on the industry as a whole,” wrote NBC president of program planning, strategy and research, Jeff Bader, in a memo, adding, “I think it’s safe to say that NBCU would not be the thought-leader in research that we are today without him.”

Hearst Television announced a year-long multi-platform news and investigative series, State of Addiction, reporting on the opiod crisis. Non-profit Partnership for Drug-Free Kids will help the Hearst stations develop monthly stories and connect the audiences to vital resources. “Many Hearst Television stations have been focused on this national crisis for the past few years,” said Jordan Wertlieb, Hearst Television President. “Now we will be expanding our efforts and devoting even more time and resources across our company to help make a difference in the communities we serve.”

Nickelodeon opened its newly expanded building in Burbank, an over 200,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art home to more than 700 Nickelodeon employees and over 20 productions. The sustainable facility includes a new five-story, building; an expansive, redesigned courtyard; and the newly renovated, original 72,000 square-foot studio that first opened in Burbank in 1998.
