PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Production has started on a new season of DIY’s The Vanilla Ice Project. “Ice Ice Baby” singer/home renovation expert Rob Van Winkle and crew showcase the latest home technology and design trends as they transform a blah property in a showplace. During its last run, the show delivered a 52% increase over year-ago levels in its Sunday timeslot.

TCA TALK

ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said Shonda Rimes may have moved to Netflix, but their relationship is “as strong as it’s ever been.” And, of course, they’re still in business. “I’m really excited about the 3 shows we have on the air and the 2 we’re about the launch,” said Dungey of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and soon-to-debut For the People and a Grey’s spin-off.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is “the strongest that it’s ever been, and we’ve been really excited about what the producers are talking about for the second half of the season,” said Dungey. Do we smell a season 6? Dungey said that decision will be made when the producers share their plan. No decision has been made about Inhumans, either, but “I will say the numbers were less exciting for us than we hoped they would be,” acknowledged the exec.

Dungey said it could have been just a case of bad timing for The Mayor, pulled off the air with 4 episodes still to go. “I feel like the show arrived on the scene at a time when people were feeling a little bit fatigued about anything that had to do with politics,” said Dungey of the freshman comedy about a rapper who wins a mayoral election as part of a publicity stunt. Dungey didn’t fault the marketing. “The issue did not seem to be one of the audience not knowing that the show was there, which is sometimes the case,” said Dungey. “People knew, they just didn’t come.”

As for the pending Disney/Fox deal, Dungey was circumspect. “At the moment my focus is on everything that’s directly in front of me, which is launching our midseason shows and ordering pilots,” Dungey told journalists. “We are in the midst of regulatory approval, and the company has said everything that could be said on the topic.”

The Office alum Jenna Fischer said “something about this script just spoke to me,” when discussing upcoming comedy Splitting Up Together, focused on a married couple who are taking a break but living together to co-parent their children. “I’m a wife and mother now, and I feel like I’m going to get to express this whole other part of my personality….It was just such a rich world, but told so beautifully and warmly.” Would she take part in the rumored revival of The Office? “I don’t know anything about The Office revival,” said Fischer. “But I love Pam, oh my God!”

ABC renewed The Gong Show for a second season, with production starting later this year. At TCA, Mike Myers confirmed that he is Tommy Maitland, the “British” host of the show. “Being the host of The Gong Show is pure a blast! Pure fun,” said Myers. “It is with great delight that I can finally admit that there is indeed a Tommy Maitland, and that I portray him.”

Jimmy Kimmel, at TCA to talk about his upcoming job hosting the Academy Awards, said it was too soon to tell if the #MeToo movement would shake up the Oscars ceremony the way it did the Golden Globes. “It’s 2 months from now,” said Kimmel. “It’s like getting into a hot tub, you can’t know what the temperature is until you get there.” It will be Kimmel’s second year emceeing the event, and while Warren Beatty read the wrong movie name for Best Picture on his watch, “99% of the show went pretty well,” said Kimmel. “Ultimately it’s just a bunch of celebrities handing each other trophies.” Still, said Kimmel, “If it happens again, literally everyone that works at ABC should be fired.”

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Midseason by the numbers: ABC’s American Idol revival premieres Sunday, March 11, as previously announced, followed by new procedural Deception. ABC announced the singing competition will also air Mondays from 8p-10p for 7 weeks, starting March 12. Shondaland drama For the People debuts Monday, March 12 at 10p, and the unnamed Greys Anatomy spin-off will have a 2-hour premiere on Thursday, March 22 at 9p.
