For the first time, full episodes of American Idol are available to view online. Fox announced season 14’s premiere episode can now be streamed on AmericanIdol.com, Hulu and the FoxNOW app. Subsequent eps will be released the morning after the broadcast. The series returned this week to a 3.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic (down from 4.7 last year). It airs every Wednesday and Thursday at 8p ET.
Arrested Development’s David Cross will debut his new film, Hits, through BitTorrent on Feb. 13. The film explores fame in the Internet age and stars Amy Sedaris, Matt Walsh, and Michael Cera; it originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year. BitTorrent’s bundle service allows viewers to pay what they wish to watch content.
Zealot Networks, the digital start-up from former Maker Studios CEO Danny Zappin, added Premiere Sports & Entertainment (PSE) management and marketing firm to its network of companies. PSE will bring its network of sports clients including athletes and coaches to the digital company.
With web TV service Aereo shutting down, CEO Chet Kanojia is moving on to his next venture, called Project Decibel. Recode reports the company will act as an incubator for Kanojia and former Aereo engineers to create new technology. Aereo filed for bankruptcy protection in November, and will sell its leftover assets at the end of February.

Watch out, YouTube: Facebook is releasing more numbers, proclaiming its power in the video space. In a new blog post, the social network revealed:
– Video posts increased 75 percent around the world, and 94 percent in the U.S. in just the last year.
– The number of clips from people and brands in News Feeds is up 3.6 times over the last year.
– More than 50 percent of people who use Facebook daily in the U.S. are watching at least one video per day.
Hulu will premiere the second season of original series Behind the Mask on Feb. 26. The docu-series will return to the service with three new mascots and one from the previous season, ranging from high school sports to the MLB. Additionally, Hulu renewed its parody series of The Real Housewives for a second season. The “Hotwives” will relocate to Las Vegas for the new season, with a set of new characters.
CES 2015
Netflix reigns king among millennials compared to broadcast and cable subscriptions, according to a new survey from NATPE/Content First and the Consumer Electronics Association. Presented at CES yesterday (The full study will be released at NATPE in Miami at the end of the month), the joint study found:
– 51 percent of millennials consider Netflix very valuable, compared to 42 percent that feel the same for broadcast and 36 percent for cable.
– Only 55 percent of millennials prefer to watch TV programming on a TV screen, but 85 percent report that they still do. Additionally, 28 percent prefer to watch TV on their tablet, and 19 percent prefer to watch programming on their laptop over a TV screen.
– 84 percent of millennials watched a full episode on a streaming service in the last six months, and 54 percent watched a full ep during its original broadcast.
– Millennials are turning to streaming services over DVR devices: only 33 percent said they recorded an episode to watch with the use of a DVR.
– However, Generation X is a different story: 76 percent used their VOD service once or more a week, and regularly use DVR to avoid commercials.
CBS web TV service All Access has already proven a success since it first launched in October last year, CBS Interactive CEO and President Jim Lazone said at the Variety Entertainment Summit at CES yesterday. Subscribers to All Access watch twice as much programing as those who don’t subscribe to the service, Lazone said, though he did not disclose the exact number of subs. “The super-fan theory completely proved true,” he said. “And it’s hitting a whole new audience…we wouldn’t have access to [non-pay TV subs] otherwise.” The CBS streaming service costs $5.99 a month, with a library of 6,500 episodes and next-day access to the network’s latest shows.
Digital Trends named the winners of this year’s Top Tech of CES Awards yesterday. The Dish Sling TV App took home the Best of Show honor for the most interesting product presented at the convention. Awardees were chosen based on multiple criteria, including design, ease of use and ability to enhance people’s lives.
