TALK AT TCA

One panel at the Television Critics Association press tour focused on political and social issues as depicted on TV. The Good Fight exec producer Robert King said the CBS All Access drama will hit the headlines with an episode in which the DNC asks the show’s law firm about removing President Trump from office. “There’s a little bit of digging into the weeds on a lot of the legal issues surrounding impeachment, especially because they are really counting their chickens before they hatch,” King said of the story of eager Democrats…. Jermaine Fowler, star and exec producer of CBS’s Superior Donuts, said, “a lot of the topics we tackle have happened to me in my personal life,” including police brutality…. Madam Secretary exec producer Barbara Hall said the drama is more about diplomatic issues than political headlines. “We take people inside the State Department,” said Hall, “back when we had a State Department.”

Speaking at TCA about upcoming comedy Living Biblically, which he produces, Big Bang Theory star Johnny Galecki said that as expected, Bang will go out after season 12. “I think at this point everyone’s comfortable with 12 seasons being a good time to go home and see our families,” said Galecki. The CBS hit, currently in season 11, was renewed for a twelfth in March.

As for concern over Living Biblically, focused on a man who decides to live according to the Bible, “One of the biggest hurdles is the fear to have a conversation about [religion],” said Galecki. “There’s a fear that because it is such a personal sacred ingredient for each of us, you will be misunderstood or misjudged….Our goal is to make people laugh and inspire a conversation around the water cooler.”

The CW set the slate for the rest of the TV season. New comedy Life Sentence debuts Wednesday, March 7 at 9p, replacing Dynasty. Dynasty, with Nicollette Sheridan (Paige, Knots Landing) joining as Alexis, moves from Wednesday to Friday starting March 9 at 8p, taking Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s slot. The reboot will be followed by The Originals starting April 20, a week after the season finale of Jane the Virgin. Black Lightning, launching Tuesday, January 16 at 9p, will be followed after its midseason run by season 5 of The 100 on April 24. Legends of Tomorrow will alternate with Supergirl Mondays at 8p and iZombie is back Monday, February 26 at 9p.

Asked why the writing for black characters on the CW’s midseason superhero drama Black Lightning feels genuine, showrunner Salim Akil noted on Sunday, “The BS meter us we have a predominantly African American writing staff….And the BS meter is also our cast. They know what the language feels like in their own community.”

2017 was the biggest year of subscription revenue in Showtime history, said Showtime CEO David Nevins at TCA, noting that while “deep-pocketed friends invading from the north,” like Netflix, are pouring money into original programming, four fifths of the $72 billion projected to be spent on original content in 2018 will come from traditional media.

Season 3 of Showtime’s Billions will have Bobby Axelrod battling for a comeback – and it looks like he’ll succeed. “People go down on this show but they get back up pretty quick, said his portrayer, Damien Lewis, at TCA. “That buoyancy is what makes it so exciting to watch.” High-stakes finance drama returns Sunday, March 25 at 10p.

Showtime’s The Chi, which debuted last night, is “really black, really authentic, and very Chicago,” said series creator/exec producer/writer Lena Waithe at TCA. “We are believers in telling our own story because when someone else tells it they often get it wrong.”

Looks like it’s not the end of the road for Fargo. Speaking at FX’s executive session, FX Networks CEO John Landgraf said series creator Noah Hawley “has an idea that excites me enormously for a fourth cycle. The plan is to have it ready for 2019.”

On the subject of Louis C.K., banned from FX while the net conducted an investigation to see if there was misconduct on his shows, Landgraf said, “We didn’t find any issues of complaints of any kind during the 8 years we worked together.” Nevertheless C.K., who has copped to bad behavior elsewhere, will not return to Better Things, which he co-wrote with Pamela Adlon. “This is Pamela’s show,” said Landgraf. “These are her stories, her life….She’s going to have to write all herself or find another co-writer. She’s the font, the creative engine of that show.”

Two years after famously announcing there was “simply too much television,” Landgraf noted that in 2017, a whopping 487 scripted series ran original episodes, up 7% versus 2016. SVOD is seeing the most growth, up 30% with 117 originals.

And of course the subject of Disney’s proposed acquisition of 21st Century Fox assets, including FX Networks, came up. “We are a very lean organization, 270 people, a very small, tight, efficient organization, and we have a very distinct culture,” said Landgraf. “If we can maintain our culture, I feel optimistic about our ability to do what we do best.” Plus, the kind of adult programming that is FX’s specialty doesn’t exist at family-friendly Disney, pointed out Landgraf – and they’re going to need it to compete with the likes of Netflix, Amazon and HBO.

ADVERTISING

One of the advertising highlights of the Golden Globes was a new L’Oreal spot featuring Winona Ryder for Elvive hair care. “Everyone loves a comeback,” says the ad. “Damaged hair deserves one, too.” Comeback queen Ryder was nominated last year as Best Actress for Stranger Things, 23 years after winning a Globes award for The Age of Innocence. In between were bizarre incidents like her 2003 arrest for shoplifting at Saks Fifth Avenue.

The Interactive Ad Bureau and the American Association of Advertising Agencies put out an addendum that addresses long-form video issues like viewability and brand safety, terms for audience composition and demo-guaranteed campaigns, and rules for handling report and measurement discrepancies. “Video continues to grow as both a driver of revenue and ROI for buyers and sellers alike,” said Randall Rothenberg, CEO of IAB. “Coupling that with the scarcity of long-form video, puts pressure on the marketplace – and makes transactional guidance an imperative. It will be invaluable to have the new long-form video terms and conditions at-the-ready before this year’s Digital Content NewFronts.”

Kantar announced the launch of Kantar Consulting, an integrated sales and marketing consultancy. “With the forming of Kantar Consulting we have broken down our own silos and united the capabilities of Kantar Added Value, Kantar Futures, Kantar Vermeer and Kantar Retail to more seamlessly serve the needs of our clients,” Beth Ann Kaminkow, CEO, Brand & Marketing Americas, tells Cynopsis. “The result is a specialist growth consultancy with brand and marketing, retail, sales and shopper expertise all under one roof. This enables us to take a ‘whole demand’ approach to switching on growth for clients, categories and people.”
