CYNOPSISDIGITAL
01.03.17 Good morning. It’s Tuesday January 3, 2017 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Transcoding: The word transcoding refers to the process of translating one digital media format into another digital media format, usually using software.

Is Twitter getting an edit button? Responding to a series of tweeted questions and suggestions from users, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey strongly suggested that the company is leaning in that direction. “A form of edit is def[initely] needed,” he tweeted to one user. “But for everyone, not just those w[ith] [verified] badges.” Dorsey suggested that, at least in the short term, a function allowing users to quickly edit mistakes would be much easier to implement than a solution enabling users to make edits to tweets a while after the fact. For one thing, Dorsey said, the latter would necessitate the creation of a “change log” enabling other users to see the different versions of people’s edited tweets. No word yet on when any of the changes might be implemented.
As first picked up by Reuters, a new internal email from Chinese e-commerce giant Aliaba details a plan to invest about $7.2 billion in media and entertainment over the next three years. The new initiative is being overseen by Yu Yongfu, who serves as both Alibaba’s digital chief and as CEO of the company’s filmmaking property, Alibaba Pictures group. The details of the $7.2 billion investment are a bit unclear as of yet. For one, it’s not known whether the total includes Alibaba’s previously announced commitments, or its recently-announced plan to consolidate its media businesses.
Machine learning has come to Snapchat. As detailed in a recent Adweek story, Snapchat parent Snap Inc. has begun introducing what it’s calling Goal-Based Bidding, or GBB. GBB uses machine learning to determine which users are most likely to swipe certain types of ads. The tool is now available to marketers who buy ads through Snapchat’s API. You can check out the Adweek piece here.

Twitter’s platform now supports 360-degree live video streaming. The new feature is powered by Periscope, which Twitter has owned since 2015. The new 360-degree live video tool enables users to pan around within a live-stream by moving their phone. While the new tool is currently available only to a select group of Twitter partners, Periscope says it will roll out more widely in the coming weeks. It’ll be accessible through both the Twitter and Periscope apps.
Samsung looks set to launch some new smart TV functionality. The news, first noticed by Variety, comes via a mistakenly published update to Smart View, Samsung’s smart TV app. Screenshots make clear that the newest version of Smart View will feature tabs for content providers including Amazon, YouTube and Hulu. In addition, there are tabs for TV Plus, Samsung’s new Fandango-powered streaming channels. It appears that users will be able to stream content from any of these sources directly to Samsung Smart TVs, using their smartphones as a remote – similar to Google’s Chromecast. Samsung hasn’t commented on the story, but the company will likely have a lot to say on the subject at CES this week.
Back in October, AT&T began teasing a $35-per-month pricing plan for DirecTV Now, the OTT-based live TV service that then debuted in November. At the time, many openly questioned how the surprisingly low price could net AT&T any substantial profits. The answer: It almost certainly couldn’t have, and AT&T was well aware. The company eventually clarified that the $35 price tag, which gave users a package of over 100 channels, was a limited-time promo offer. Now it’s about to come to an end. AT&T has revealed that, come January 9, $35 will become $60. (Anyone who signs up before then can continue paying the lower price, at least for now.) After January 9, would-be subs who want to pay $35 per month can still get DirecTV Now’s “Live a Little” package, which comes equipped with 64 channels.
Hulu has struck a new licensing deal with Disney. The service will now gain the exclusive SVOD rights to 56 Disney-owned films, such as Pocahontas, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Con Air. Some of the titles started rolling out to Hulu users this week, while others will debut in the coming months. Deal terms weren’t disclosed.
It seems Twitter’s executive turnover woes aren’t limited to the Western Hemisphere. Kathy Chen, the company’s China chief, is now the latest exec to leave the company. She served for eight months. Chen was a controversial choice to begin with, having had previous employment links to the Chinese military. As the Wall Street Journal points out, the company was hoping Chen could help get Chinese advertisers on board. (Twitter has actually been blocked in the Middle Kingdom since 2009.) Twitter says it’ll still keep its Hong Kong office open. Other Asia-based execs have left Twitter in recent months as well, including Parminder Singh, who headed up Twitter’s efforts in India, Southeast Asia, North Africa and the Middle East.
How many of Arrested Development‘s four seasons originally ran on Netflix? (Email trivia@cynopsis.com with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and state.)
Our Last Trivia Question: Who are the two credited co-founders of Google? Answer: Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Kudos to Susan Nessanbaum-Goldberg-M and S Entertainment, Inc./CA, Andy Pittman-TAMU/TX, David Westberg-SAG-AFTRA Federal Credit Union/CA, Lorrie Shilling/CA, and Faye Kulik-Fox Networks Group/NY
