After cutting 12,000 jobs – or 6% of its workforce – last year, Google just laid off upwards of 1000 more, and cut 100 jobs at YouTube. “Every year we go through a rigorous process to structure our team to provide the best service to our Ads customers,” said the company in a statement. “We map customers to the right specialist teams and sales channels to meet their service needs.”

In response, Alphabet Workers Union called for protests at five Google campuses last week. “Our colleagues are rightfully outraged and more frustrated than ever as we watch Google prioritize ‘efficiency’ over the people responsible for the company’s continued, incredible success,” said Stephen McMurtry, the union’s chair.

Samsung introduced its new flagship line: the Galaxy S24 (starting at $800), Galaxy S24+ ($1,0000) and Galaxy S24 Ultra ($1,3000). Image editing was a primary enhancement. “After great shots are captured, innovative Galaxy AI editing tools enable simple edits like erase, recompose, and remaster,” said the company. “For easier and more efficient optimizations, Edit Suggestion uses Galaxy AI to suggest perfectly suitable tweaks for each photo. To give users even more creative control and freedom, Generative Edit can fill in parts of an image background with generative AI. When a picture is crooked, AI will fill in the borders.”

Project management and note-taking service Notion introduced Notion Calendar. “With Notion Calendar, you can see your day’s schedule and join virtual meetings right from your computer’s menu bar,” wrote Raphael Schaad, Head of Notion Calendar, in a blog post. “If you’re writing a plan for an upcoming product launch, you don’t ever have to leave that page to see what meetings are coming up or how much time you have until those meetings.” Notion Calendar is available for Mac, Windows, iOS and on the web, with an Android app on the way.

A judge in Georgia denied OpenAI’s motion to dismiss a defamation lawsuit by radio host Mark Walters, who alleged that ChatGPT provided false and malicious information about him to a journalist. “Although the technology behind ChatGPT may be new, plaintiff’s claims fail for reasons deep-rooted in settled defamation law: there was no publication, no actual malice, no listener who believed the alleged defamatory content, and thus no harm to any reputation,” OpenAI had argued in a November filing.

Dedicated apps for Netflix, YouTube Spotify will not be available on the Apple Vision Pro headset at launch. “Our members will be able to enjoy Netflix on the web browser on the Vision Pro, similar to how our members can enjoy Netflix on Macs,” said the streamer. The lineup will include Disney+, ESPN+, Max, Discovery+, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock, Pluto TV, Tubi, Fubo, Crunchyroll, TikTok, NBA, MLB and PGA Tour. The $3,500 device drops February 2.

Sky Mexico has deployed ThinkAnalytics, focused on Al-based TV content discovery, viewer data insights and targeted advertising, as its personalization and viewer engagement platform. “The solution was deployed in under 90 days and supports ‘cold start’ viewers through to advanced personalized content discovery and editorially curated campaigns, where Sky México can now keep viewers better engaged to provide the optimal user experience, and in turn, reduce churn and increase revenue,” said Marc Aldrich, Worldwide CEO, ThinkAnalytics.

Republican Presidential primary spending totaled $259 million through January 5, according to an AdImpact report. Key findings include:
· Among individual candidates, Nikki Haley received the most ad support at $63.7 million, followed by Ron DeSantis ($58.1 million) and Donald Trump ($51.7 million). Vivek Ramaswamy spent $8 million.
· The total number of unique ads run was 271, totaling 146,000 airings. Ron DeSantis has the most unique ads and airings supporting his campaign.
· The economy (22%), immigration (21.2%), candidates’ characters (18.8%) and China (17.4%) have dominated TV ad messaging across the Republican Presidential primary.“

As the first two states voting in the Republican primaries, the majority of ad dollars have gone to Iowa and New Hampshire, making up 46% and 27% of all spending respectively,” said John Link, VP of Data at AdImpact. “We expect this level of activity to continue for the next states up in the primaries, leading up to Super Tuesday in March.”

Omnichannel supply-side platform OpenX Technologies and StackAdapt, a multi-channel advertising platform, are partnering to help enable political advertisers to reach their target audiences programmatically across CTV, mobile, web and display. “This partnership will greatly benefit our political advertiser customers as we lean in on what will be a huge year for this vertical market,” said Michael Shang, Vice President of Partnerships and Business Solutions at StackAdapt. “Through OpenX’s innovative creative review tool, advertisers partnering with StackAdapt can anticipate expedited creative approvals.”

Fifty-three percent of CTV users wish all TV ads had a quick option to buy products, and 63% wish they could see store/brand inventory from their TV, according to LG Ad Solutions’ “The Shoppable TV Report: 2024 and Beyond.” Among CTV users, 81% are influenced by TV ads in their shopping decisions and 63% often discover new brands and products through TV ads. Beyond influence and product discovery, 47% have made a purchase after seeing a TV ad in the past three months. Of those consumers, 56% completed a purchase using their mobile phone, followed by laptop/desktop (45%), in-store (31%), tablets (31%) and on CTV (29%). “Most CTV users envision and desire a TV experience that enables them to easily purchase the products advertised to them,” said Tony Marlow, CMO at LG Ad Solutions. “The future of television is shaping up to be an immersive canvas of personalized, interactive experiences. We are entering an era where TV is not just a device for passive viewing, but also a dynamic platform for engagement, interaction, and shopping.”

Funding for increased CTV investment will be pulled from linear TV budgets by close to half 43% of all marketers, according to Proximic by Comscore’s second annual State of Programmatic report. Additional insights include:
· Nearly one-third of marketers are not prepared for cookie deprecation
· A large majority plan to maintain or increase reliance on contextual targeting
· Another overwhelming majority believe AI will change the programmatic landscape

By integrating the sales growth engine into its core ad tech portfolio, Imagine now offers a comprehensive monetization solution which will be re-released as CrossFlight, after some key enhancements for broadcast TV, and is expected to be available in early 2024.

Brightcove has added Sprinklr, the unified customer experience management platform, to the Brightcove Marketplace. The product integration allows Brightcove users to seamlessly manage and publish their video content across multiple social media channels through Sprinklr.

Viant Technology announced a new integration with PurpleLab™, a healthcare analytics company, to create a measurement solution for healthcare marketers. Viant’s integration with PurpleLab™ aims to empower healthcare brands and advertisers by providing access to closed-loop, de-identified measurement and reporting in a single platform.

Lotame announced its adoption of Unified ID 2.0 technology to help enhance cross-channel data interoperability, addressing the challenge posed by the deprecation of third-party cookies. The partnership extends Lotame’s data capabilities to include audience activation across authenticated ad inventory. “Interoperability with Unified ID 2.0 is a game-changer,” said Eli Heath, Head of Identity at Lotame. “This integration complements our holistic approach to addressability across both authenticated and non-authenticated environments with our Panorama ID, and positions us uniquely for scaled audience activations across all channels.”
