IN THE NEWS

Fox Television Stations, Debmar-Mercury and producer Will Packer (Night School, Girls Trip) are teaming to bring back Central Ave as a weekly, nationally syndicated format. The provocative Atlanta-based series had been tested during November sweeps as a weekday strip. “With our consensus being shows like this rarely come along, and with an unusually crowded weekday market this fall, we looked toward the weekends,” said Debmar-Mercury co-presidents Ira Bernstein and Mort Marcus. “Having the entire stage all to itself, we believe Central Ave has a good chance to thrive airing in strong weekend time periods with all original episodes and ultimately return as a weekday strip.” Added Frank Cicha, EVP of Programming for Fox Television Stations, “I thought the test was very well executed, but let’s face it, this is as close as I’ll ever get to hanging out with Will Packer on the weekend.”

Outstanding film and TV performances were honored Sunday night at the 26th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Taking home trophies for small screen work were Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams for Fosse/Verdon; Game of Thrones’ Peter Dinklage, Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show), Tony Shalhoub (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), as well as the casts of The Crown, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and for action performances by a stunt ensemble, Game of Thrones.

It’s not just the award that had Aniston excited to be part of Apple TV+’s Morning Show cast. Speaking to the press after her win, Aniston said of the #MeToo drama, “I’m so honored to be a part of show that is beginning the conversation and dialogue of an issue that affects each and every one of us all across the world. That has really been an extraordinary experience to explore.”

Winners of the Producers Guild of America were announced Saturday night. TV winners included producers for Succession, Fleabag, Chernobyl, Apollo: Missions to the Moon, Leaving Neverland, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, What’s My Name ,and Sesame Street.

Buoyed by the success of its “25 Days of Christmas” and “31 Nights of Halloween” stunts, Freeform is doing a deep dive into Valentine’s Day, it was announced at TCA on Friday. “Love However the FF You Want” runs for eight nights beginning Saturday, February 8. The event includes the Saturday, February 15 premiere of original film The Thing About Harry, as well as V-Day themed episodes of Good Trouble, and the Freeform premieres of Deadpool, Pitch Perfect 2 and The Other Woman.

AMC renewed Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul for a sixth and final 13-episode season. “Greenlighting a prequel to one of the most iconic series in television history is one of the boldest swings that AMC has ever taken. But, thanks to the creative genius of Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, it has also been one of the most rewarding,” said Sarah Barnett, president of AMC Networks Entertainment Group and AMC Studios.

Nightly 10p newscasts are being introduced on CBS-owned CW affiliates. WKBD Detroit, WUPA Atlanta and WTOG Tampa are hiring multimedia news journalists to create news content. “Our stations love news. It does so much for a station’s identity in the community it serves, and it is appealing for advertisers,” said Peter Dunn, CBS Television Stations President. “Given advances in technology and the high demand for political advertising this year, this is a perfect time for us to launch newscasts on our CW stations.” Days earlier, Nexstar announced WGN America is launching a three-hour nightly newscast this summer.

Volvo launched its Volvo Safety Sunday campaign on Monday, offering Super Bowl fans a chance to design and win their ideal Volvo car if a safety is scored during the big game. People can visit VolvoSafetySunday.com to build a vehicle; Volvo will award cars to winners from a pool of $1 million. Sweepstakes runs through February 2. For the uninitiated, a safety is a relatively rare scoring play – which has occurred just 17% of Super Bowl games – that occurs when an offensive team is tackled, loses or fumbles the ball, or commits a penalty in their own end zone, resulting in two points to the defensive team. Another fun fact: Volvo invented the three-point safety belt in 1959, and opened the belt’s patent to all automakers.

Meryl Streep, Chris O’Dowd, Jacob Tremblay and Ruth Negga will voice Apple TV+ animated short Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth, debuting April 17. The 36-minute film is based on the 2017 bestseller of the same name, centered on a 7-year-old boy who learns about the wonders of the planet.

Freeform and Hulu acquired three films from STXfilms: 2017 comedy/drama The Upside, 2018 Amy Schumer comedy I Feel Pretty, and 2019 drama Hustlers. Starting with Pretty in August 2020, the movies will premiere day and date on Freeform and Hulu.

Call for submissions: To be included in the Cynopsis Upfronts Guide, the go-to resource for buyers and planners during the 2020 Upfronts season, please submit the dates/times/locations of upfront events (if no events are planned, include a tagline or up to 25-word mission statement) and logo by March 1 to [email protected]. Dish was blacked out in ten stations Apollo Global Management acquired from Northwest Broadcasting – and the timing was less than ideal. “Apollo intentionally delayed negotiations and purposely chose NFL Championship weekend to remove its channels, to inflict maximum pain for consumers. The channels could come back today if Apollo would give us the green light,” said Andy LeCuyer, SVP of programming for Dish. “On behalf of customers, we ask Apollo to stop punishing its own viewers so we can focus on reaching a fair deal.”

How Manhunt: Deadly Games, the Spectrum Originals/Lionsgate Television series about falsely accused security guard Richard Jewell, will differ from feature film Jewell was a question EP Andrew Sodroski handled at TCA. “One of the great differences between film and television is that they had 110 minutes to tell a story, we had [10] hours,” he said. Limited series premieres February 3.

Hulu offered a look at new series High Fidelity, inspired by the 1995 novel by Nick Hornby, at TCA. The adaptation flips the main character, record store owner Rob, from man to woman, this time played by Zoe Kravitz (whose mother, Lisa Bonet, appeared in the 2000 film adaptation). “The main things we wanted to keep were the core conflict of the central character who is this hopeless romantic which is fueled by the obsession with pop music, but at the same time a total cynic,” said EP Veronica West. “That core issue for that character seems something really universal even if it’s classically male.”
