01/20/21: Allied Esports Entertainment sold WPT to Element Partners

Allied Esports Entertainment announced the sale of World Poker Tour and other poker assets to Element Partners. Element will acquire World Poker Tour for a total of $78,250,000, consisting of a $68,250,000 upfront payment and a fully guaranteed revenue share of 5% of WPT-branded tournament entry fees on Element-owned or licensed gaming platforms, up to a maximum of $10 million, payable over three years after closing. In addition, Allied Esports, and the Company’s Board agreed to explore strategic options for the esports business, including a possible sale. The company has engaged Lake Street Capital Markets to assist with the process.

PROGRAMMING

ESPN locked in its broadcast team for the 2021 season of Sunday Night Baseball presented by Taco Bell, with analyst Alex Rodriguez re-signing, along with play-by-play voice Matt Vasgersian, and reporter Buster Olney all returning for their second season as a trio and their fourth season together overall. The threesome will call ESPN’s exclusive Opening Night telecast of New York Mets at Washington Nationals on April 1 at 7p, followed by the Sunday Night Baseball season debut on April 4 as the Los Angeles Angels host the Chicago White Sox at 8:30p.

On the ratings front, FOX Sports reports that its coverage of the Bucs and Saints in the NFL Divisional Round this past weekend notched the best rating for an NFL telecast of any kind since the last Super Bowl, laying claim to a 21.2/39. Tampa led all markets with a 34.9/53, followed by Providence, Milwaukee, Boston and Kansas City.

TNT is boasting that its MLK Day primetime doubleheader coveragefeaturing Bucks/Nets and Warriors/Lakers – averaged 2.1 million viewers for a lift of 31% over last year’s comparable coverage, according to Nielsen Fast Nationals. Overall, TNT’s MLK Day tripleheader, which also included the Suns/Grizzlies, averaged 1.6 million viewers across TNT and TV Everywhere platforms, up 26% over last year’s coverage.

The first game of the 2020-21 NHL season last week between the Penguins and Flyers averaged a Total Audience Delivery of 972,000 viewers on NBCSN, making it the network’s most-watched regular-season game on record. The Opening Night tripleheader on NBCSN, which also included Chicago/Tampa Bay and St. Louis/Colorado, averaged a TAD of 774,000 viewers, making it the network’s most-watched multi-game Opening Night on record and up 29% from last year’s doubleheader (600,000).

EA SPORTS and the NFL shared more details about the new virtual 2021 Pro Bowl Presented by Verizon experience. On Sunday, January 31, EA SPORTS and the NFL will host a special presentation of Pro Bowl: The Madden NFL 21 Edition Presented by Verizon on NFL social channels and simulcast on NFL Network at 5p. During the event, Houston Texans’ Deshaun Watson and Arizona Cardinals’ Kyler Murray will lead two teams of fellow NFL stars and celebrities going head-to-head in the Madden NFL 21 video game with the official AFC and NFC all-star rosters.

ESPN re-signed sports broadcaster and author Mark Kriegel to its boxing announcer team. Kriegel, who joined ESPN in 2017, will continue to serve as an essayist, commentator and reporter on Top Rank on ESPN events. In addition to his on-air boxing duties, Kriegel will continue to do long-form story-telling, and video and print features and columns, on a wide array of subjects.

Bleacher Report and DraftKings are teaming up to provide football fans with an exclusive first glimpse at DraftKings’ proprietary Super Bowl prop bets in a new reveal show streamed live on the Bleacher Report app. B/R Drop Zone: DraftKings Big Game Prop Reveal takes place on Jan. 25 at 6p and be hosted by Bleacher Report’s Cabbie Richards and Greg Ivory.

WWE announced upcoming host cities for WrestleMania, spanning 2021-23 and beginning with WrestleMania 37 on April 10 and 11 from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay this year. The event then moves to Arlington/Dallas at AT&T Stadium on April 3, 2022, and caps 2023 at SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park in Los Angeles.

FIGHT SPORTS announced that it secured rights to a slate of events to open 2021 that include back-to-back world title fights in February. The events will be held on Feb. 13 and 20 and include bouts for the WBO Light Heavyweight World Title and a super-featherweight title clash for the WBC Super Featherweight World Championship. The company will be broadcasting both events exclusively and Live in over 30 countries throughout Europe and Asia, including Spain, Belgium, and Greece, as well as Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines.

CBS Sports will see its long-running golf coverage taken over this year by new lead producer Sellers Shy, who becomes only the third lead producer in CBS Sports’ storied golf history. The company will debut new elements to enhance the golf broadcast, including a constant mini-leaderboard; new theme music; a dedicated PGA TOUR rules official; enhanced capabilities and presentation for SmartCart; live drone coverage, and more beginning with the Farmers Insurance Open next weekend on Jan. 30 from 3-6p.

YES reports that its telecast of the Magic/Nets game averaged 143,000 viewers in the New York DMA, nearly double YES’ season-to-date average of 72,000 viewers., despite running up against NFL playoff action and the Rangers/Islanders game. The Magic-Nets telecast was the second-most viewed Nets telecast of the season for YES, after its December 27 Nets-Charlotte telecast.

Telemundo Deportes announced that it will bring Telemundo’s exclusive broadcast coverage of LigaMX legends, C.D. Guadalajara, also known as Chivas de Guadalajara, to SiriusXM listeners nationwide. The agreement will allow SiriusXM to air Telemundo Deportes’ live English-language audio coverage of all Chivas de Guadalajara home matches throughout the Guard1anes 2021 Clausura Tournament on the NBC Sports Audio channel.

The Montreal Impact announced an identity change on Thursday, becoming Club de Foot Montréal (CF Montréal, CFM or CFMTL). “Football is more established than ever in Montreal, and its history, which dates to the late 1800s, continues to evolve with this announcement. USA Triathlon announced a partnership with Zone3 as the organization’s Exclusive Swimwear Partner through 2024. Menswear brand Swet Tailor locked in a deal with the Reese’s Senior Bowl to exclusively sponsor the off-the-field wardrobe for players, coaches and staff. This marks the first time the Senior Bowl has brought on a brand to handle all non-field related apparel in the history of the game. “This is an exciting partnership for the Reese’s Senior Bowl. John Skipper and Dan Le Batard cemented their much-discussed partnership, forming a company that will be known as Meadowlark Media, according to multiple reports. The content venture will be backed by Len Blavatnik’s Access Industries. “I’m thrilled to be back in business with Dan, one of the leading and most unique voices in sports media,” said Skipper. “We have a lot in the works, but the first order of business will be to find Dan a new home for his wildly popular audio programs.”

DraftKings Inc. announced the upcoming launch in Michigan of its mobile Sportsbook and Casino app, starting Jan. 22. The launch of DraftKings Sportsbook in Michigan follows an expansive year during which DraftKings broadened its national sportsbook product footprint to include Colorado, Illinois, Iowa and Tennessee. Upon successful launch on Friday, the company will be live with mobile sports betting in 11 states.

ESPORTS

Fortnite revealed its largest sports partnership to-date, teaming up with 23 soccer clubs around the world in addition to soccer star Pelé to offer Fortnite players items such as skins, emotes as well as a way to play soccer within the game’s world. Jan. 23 will see the game open with 10 different outfit variants that can be changed out to represent any of the participating clubs, including the likes of AC Milan, Manchester City, Melbourne City and Los Angeles FC. Clubs will also host their own Fortnite tournaments with custom jerseys and rewards. In addition, Epic Games announced that the Fortnite Championship Series will boast a prize pool of $20 million in 2021.

Riot Games announced that the 2021 VALORANT Champions Tour will launch in North America on Jan. 27, and tapped the services of Nerd Street Gamers to serve as the official tournament operator and producer for VCT Stage 1. The stage will run through March 21, and will provide a mix of open and closed qualifiers to ensure opportunities for both amateur and established orgs to qualify into the Masters. The first stage will consist of three Challenger Weekends, which function as closed qualifiers to determine who moves on to the concluding Masters event. A weekly open qualifier will determine which teams compete in the Challenger Weekend.

Psyonix and ESPN’s X Games teamed up to celebrate the upcoming X Games in Aspen with new Rocket League items as well as a Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) X Regional event. Rocket League will feature X Games-inspired items in the Item Shop from January 21-24 and from January 28-31. The RLCS X Games: North American Regional will take place online on January 23-24 and January 30-31. This regional is both an official part of the RLCS X circuit and an official X Games Aspen event where the top North American teams will compete against each other, with the winning team earning RLCS X Games medals.

Twitch Rivals is teaming up with Samsung for a partnership this year that cements Samsung Galaxy as the exclusive mobile device partner of the tournament series. Through this partnership, Twitch Rivals and Samsung are launching a year-long program serving up regular, exclusive mobile gaming challenges and events, such as Twitch Rivals Mobile Challenges and Mobile Mondays presented by Samsung, along with the unveiling of the next generation of “mobile gaming heroes” later this year.
