IN THE NEWS

National TV ad spending losses dropped 2% in November from 2021, according to Standard Media Index. NFL and college football brought in $1.1 billion for the month, despite a 15% loss in national TV advertising dollars compared with the same period one year ago. Count Amazon Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football,” and the total NFL national ad spend was down 8%. On the flip side, live sports programming rose 12% to an all-time high – due in large part to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which brought in $208 million. Overall, sports outdid entertainment (down 10%) and news programming (8% lower).

Nielsen ONE Ads will roll out on January 11. The new system for measuring campaigns, allowing advertisers and publishers to transact on a standard set of metrics, will feature an Alpha version, measuring how many people consume content across various platforms and devices. Noted SVP of Product Management Kim Gilberti, “Whether you’re a publisher, whether you’re an advertiser, whether you’re a brand, you really need to be able to understand your audience across all these different sources in a way that’s truly comparable.”

Walter White is back in the kitchen, and this time he’s cooking up snacks in a Super Bowl commercial. Bryan Cranston reprised his four-time Emmy-winning “Breaking Bad” role for a PopCorners ad, which will air next month. In an Instagram post by Cranston, White stands in a desert, holding a bag of white cheddar PopCorners.

SeeHer President Christine Guilfoyle shares what is needed for us to realize a world free from gender bias, in the first Cynsiders of 2023.

CBS is offering ad deals with built-in TV promotions. The Paramount Global network will now list programs on a start-up service that aligns TV series with marketers’ campaigns. Alan Gould, co-founder of MutualMarkets, said that the idea will “hook up” advertisers with programs, saying, “There is no easy way now for brands to do deals with those shows.”

Stephen Amell will reprise his role as Oliver Queen in the final season of “The Flash.” Amell will guest star in episode 909 of the show’s ninth season. “It’s all to say ‘thank you’ to everyone for watching and supporting our show throughout nine wonderful years,” said executive producer Eric Wallace.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

What’s billed as the first US lesbian dating competition show will premiere on Valentine’s Day. “Coming Out for Love,” from filmmaker Nicole Conn and host Jessica Clark, LGBTQIA+ activist, will showcase 16 queer women living under one roof over the course of 16 episodes. The series will premiere worldwide across digital streaming platforms, with new episodes to air weekly.

Apple TV+ will release “Shape Island” as part of its expansion into the kids and family domain. With the voices of Yvette Nicole Brown, Scott Adsit, Harvey Guillen and more, the stop-motion series based on Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen’s picture books will premiere on January 20.

COMING UP

CNN will air a special presentation of “January 6th” on Saturday at 8p. The discovery+ original film is set to stream on CNN.com and CNN mobile apps.

The Beach Boys, Amethyst Kiah and Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil will star in season four of “My Opry Debut.” Chronicling the artists’ preparation for their Grand Ole Opry debut in Nashville, the Circle Network series will premiere Saturday at 10p.

TECH TALK

Ampersand has launched addressable automation for buyers. Fueled by aggregated data, the standardization is aimed at streamlining workflow between buyers and sellers, and increasing the speed of execution for addressable TV inventory across the company’s supply partners, including Charter Communications, Comcast and Verizon.

Sinclair Broadcast Group will unveil NextGen Broadcast enhancements at CES. The developments will serve as a vision of the company’s “mobile-first” offering of video and data services, delivery of picture quality improvements and a merger of broadcast and broadband capabilities.

STREAMING

Amazon consolidated Prime Video, MGM+ and FreeVee under one unit. Andrew Bennett will lead the latest revamp as VP and head of global video partnerships, further enabling the company to leverage the streaming services across device partners.

Roku is releasing two new models this spring. At CES on Wednesday, the company unveiled The Roku Select and Roku Plus Series TVs, marking its expansion into TV hardware manufacturing and the audio space. The TVs will be available in 11 sizes with prices ranging from $119 to $999, and will include a wireless soundbar and voice remote.

Cinedigm acquired the exclusive rights to the Cirque du Soleil content library. The partnership will bring nearly 30 hours of live show performances, documentaries and acrobatic content to AVOD, FAST and TVOD platforms in the US, beginning March 2023.

SPORTS

“Sports is important. And suddenly it’s not.” These were the words of ESPN “SportsCenter” host Scott Van Pelt following Damar Hamlin’s collapse on the field during the Bills-Bengals game on Monday. The network immediately cut to commercial break and the game was suspended indefinitely, unlike UEFA’s decision to continue the Denmark-Finland match in the Euro 2020 following Dane Christian Eriksen’s collapse from cardiac arrest. Dion Dawkins, Buffalo Bills offensive tackle, said he was “truly blessed that [they] didn’t have to keep playing” after Hamlin’s emergency.
