The NCAA announced it will host its entire 67-game March Madness basketball championship in four venues in Indiana, a move that cuts back significantly on travel amid the Covid-19 health crisis. The organization said it is working with local officials to determine the feasability of having fans attend games. “The 2021 version of March Madness will be one to remember, if for no other reason than the uniqueness of the event,” said NCAA SVP Basketball Dan Gavitt. “We are making the most of the circumstances the global pandemic has presented.” CBS Sports and Turner Sports will continue to distribute games across TBS, CBS, TNT, truTV and their digital platforms. Last year’s tournament was canceled due to Covid-19; until then the championship had taken place every year since its inception in 1939.
Martin Sorrell’s marketing group S4 Capital announced the acquisitions of creative agency Decoded Advertising and performance marketing firm Metric Theory. Decoded Advertising will combine with MediaMonks, while Metric Theory will merge with S4’s MightyHive. S4 said it is accelerating its growth strategy now that uncertainty about Brexit has abated, and expects to announce further acquisitions in the months ahead.
Disney+’s “The Mandalorian” has taken the crown from HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” which ended in 2019, as the world’s most-pirated show, according to TorrentFreak. Also in the top ten: Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys,” HBO’s “Westworld,” Amazon’s “Vikings,” CBS All Access’ “Star Trek: Picard,” Cartoon Network’s “Rick & Morty,” AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” HBO’s “The Outsider,” and the CW’s “Arrow” and “The Flash.”
Google employees announced plans to unionize with the Communications Workers of America Local 1400. The stated goal of the Alphabet Workers Union, open to temporary and full time workers, is to protect members from issues including pay disparity and retaliation.
Tegna and Nextstar renewed NBC station affiliation agreements. The deals cover 33 Nextstar markets and Tegna-owned stations in 20 markets.
CBS News’ Mark Strassmann has been named “Face the Nation” senior national correspondent. Strassmann is also senior national correspondent for CBS News and will continue contributing reporting across all CBS News broadcasts and platforms, in addition to regularly reporting for “CBS News Sunday.”
MSNBC anchor Jonathan Capehart joins PBS NewsHour as a regular contributor. He will provide political analysis and commentary alongside New York Times columnist David Brooks for Friday discussion segment “Brooks & Capehart.” Capehart succeeds Mark Shields, a PBS NewsHour regular for over 33 years before stepping down last month.

A new version of a 2018 Chris Rock stand-up special drops on Netflix on Tuesday, January 12. “Chris Rock: Total Blackout, The Tamborine Extended Cut” will include additional set content, as well as behind-the-scenes footage. “It’s a Netflix special. Not a normal, not a routine. It’s a special,” said Rock in a trailer for the show.

Guests offering recipes on discovery+ cooking series “Mary McCartney Serves It Up,” launching Thursday, February 4, include Cameron Diaz, Dave Grohl, Kate Hudson, Gayle King, Nicole Riche, Mark Ronson and Liv Tyler. “With the help of a few friends, I want to show that meat free eating can be varied, delicious and accessible to everyone,” said McCartney.
HBO grabbed North American TV and streaming rights to six-part Scandinavian drama series “The Investigation,” exploring the complex real-life investigation surrounding the 2017 murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall. The limited series debuts Monday, February 1 at 10p. Meanwhile, HBO Max will be the exclusive US home to WarnerMedia Germany’s “Arthur’s Law,” set to premiere Thursday, January 7. In the German-language dark comedy, an unemployed man plots his obnoxious wife’s death.
Season two of “Crossing Lines” makes its US premiere Monday, January 11 at 7p on Ovation TV. The crime drama starring Donald Sutherland and William Fichtner returns for season three in February.
AccuWeather is celebrating National Weatherperson’s Day from Monday, February 1, through Friday, February 5 (the official date) by highlighting historical heroes from meteorology, as well sharing how AccuWeather broadcast and behind-the-scenes meteorologists were inspired to pursue their career.
Outdoor Channel’s “The Fishmonger,” exploring how fish make to it dinner plates despite government regulations, economic downturns and the pandemic, premieres Monday, March 1 at 7:30p.
ESPN’s first “MegaCast” of Sunday’s NFL Wild Card playoff game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Tennessee Titans will stream on ESPN, ABC and NFL digital properties, as well as air on Disney networks ESPN, ABC, ESPN2, Freeform and ESPN Deportes. The event will include a halftime performance by DJ Khaled airing on Freeform, during a network watch party aimed at luring younger viewers.

Slack suffered a global outage as employees returned to work on Monday. The problem was reported around 10a, and service began to resume for some users around 12:20p. The office chat app, used by over 750,000 companies, is being acquired by Salesforce in a $27.7 billion deal.
STREAMING
Subscriptions to on-demand video services will hit 1.9 billion globally by the end of 2025, projects Juniper Research, up 65% from year-end 2020. Hybrid services that include ad-supported tiers are expected to account for $1.4 billion in ad spend.
Discovery Inc. streamer discovery+ is now live on Amazon Fire TV, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Roku and Samsung Smart TVs, and Prime Video is on the way. “We are thrilled to be working with best-in-class partners to make it available everywhere our fans are,” said David Zaslav, President and CEO, Discovery Inc. “Our ambition is simple: bring consumers the definitive and most complete destination for real life entertainment at a price point that makes this the perfect companion for every household’s streaming and TV portfolio.” Newly announced launch sponsors include La-Z-Boy, Aflac, Campbell’s, Subaru of America, Inc. and Ace Hardware, joining inaugural advertisers Boston Beer Company, Kraft Heinz, Lowe’s and Toyota.
Discovery, Inc. also signed a new long-term, multi-platform deal with Vodafone that includes giving Vodafone customers in 12 European markets access to discovery+. The partnership covers Vodafone’s TV and mobile customers in the UK, Germany, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Romania, Portugal, Greece, Czech Republic, Hungary, Ireland and Iceland.
ViacomCBS inked a new distribution agreement with Hulu that adds more content from its portfolio of networks to Hulu’s live TV subscription streaming service, Hulu + Live TV. The deal includes continued carriage of CBS broadcast stations, CBS Sports Network, Pop TV, Smithsonian Channel, and The CW, as well as continued distribution of ViacomCBS’ premium subscription service, Showtime. Added to the offering are BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, VH1, CMT, Nick Jr., TV Land, BET Her, MTV2, NickToons, TeenNick and MTV Classic.
AMC Networks is making it easy (and free) for viewers to catch up on “A Discovery of Witches,” which has its season two launch on AMC+, Shudder and Sundance Now on Saturday, January 9. Season one of the series – which drove record usage and subscriptions for Sundance Now and Shudder – is available on all three AMC streaming services through January 18, and will air on linear as a full-season marathon on AMC on January 24.
Cinedigm announced two of its streaming channels, CONtv Anime and MyTime Movie Network, have launched on VIZIO SmartCast. “The future of video is streaming and VIZIO helps us effectively reach a growing audience of consumers who are seeking high-quality entertainment,” said Tony Huidor, GM of Digital Networks at Cinedigm.
Quibi is in advanced talks to sell its content catalogue to Roku, according to the Wall Street Journal. The short-lived short-form service, launched in April, announced in October it was shutting down.
News streaming service Haystack is launching channels this month dedicated to local, national and global coverage of the two Georgia Senate runoff elections and the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. The channels draw upon content from a portfolio of local, national and global news on FAST, in addition to ABC News, the AP, Bloomberg, CBS News, Cheddar, Euronews and Newsy.
Toonz Media Group is partnering with digital content distribution platform OTTera to provide the technology support for the Group’s new OTT platform. OTTera will host and provide the technology support for Toonz Media Group’s OTT channel, as well as distribute the Toonz library across VOD platforms. “Our shared experience in the children’s entertainment space, paired with their popular IP’s, will certainly make the Toonz channel launch a global success,” said Stephen L. Hodge, co-CEO of OTTera, Inc. The new platform will include over 1500 half hours of movie and episodic content.

Format deals for Australian series “Pooch Perfect” have been struck with Tresor TV Productions in Germany and Fabiola for the Benelux territories, while the original Australian series, commissioned by Seven Network and hosted by Rebel Wilson, has been licensed to TV2 in Denmark, YLE in Finland, SIC in Portugal, Blue Ant Media in Canada and Quebecor in French-speaking Canada.

NBCUniversal wrapped 2020 with two networks among the top 5 ad-supported cable nets in A18-49 ratings: Bravo and USA. Bravo boasted the most series (6) in the top 20 reality programs across linear, and USA’s “WWE Monday Night Raw” was the #1 most social primetime series in all of television, excluding kids.
The January 1 season 13 premiere of “Rupaul’s Drag Race” drew a record 1.3 million total viewers across VH1, the CW, MTV, MTV2, PopTV and Logo. VH1 claimed 525,000 of the total haul, followed by the CW with 478,000.
Fox’s “Call Me Kat” debuted in a special post-“The OT” Sunday slot to 5.4 million viewers and 1.3 rating among A18-49, in early Nielsens. The final season premiere of the net’s “Last Man Standing” delivered a series low 2.4 million viewers and 0.5 in the demo on Sunday; both shows move the their regular Thursday berths on January 7.
