Medias First Morning Read

Covid-19 is taking a toll on CES. Originally scheduled to take place in-person in Las Vegas January 5-8, the trade show has been trimmed by one day amid the surge in Covid cases. “We are shortening the show to three days and have put in place comprehensive health measures for the safety of all attendees and participants,” said Gary Shapiro, President and CEO of the Consumer Technology Association. Attendees must show proof of vaccination. The move comes after companies including Amazon, Twitter, Meta, Google, Microsoft and IBM canceled their in-person presence due to health concerns. The event also has a digital option.

AT&T has struck a deal to sell its programmatic advertising marketplace, Xandr, to Microsoft. “Microsoft’s shared vision of empowering a free and open web and championing an open industry alternative via a global advertising marketplace makes it a great fit for Xandr,” said Mike Welch, EVP and GM of Xandr. “We look forward to using our innovative platform to help accelerate Microsoft’s digital advertising and retail media capabilities.”

Facebook came out victorious in an investor lawsuit accusing the company of allowing outside companies, including Cambridge Analytica, to obtain personal information from users. A US District Court judge ruled that even if the allegations were true, they wouldn’t support a finding that Facebook engaged in securities fraud.

Short-form video based social media service Triller is going public in a reverse merger with video delivery software specialist SeaChange. The new entity, TrillerVerz, will be valued at $5 billion. “The business combination with TrillerVerz represents a tremendous opportunity to invest in the future of creativity,” said SeaChange CEO Peter Aquino. “We believe that TrillerVerz’s unmatched social media reach, Gen Z engagement, and the opportunity to meaningfully expand its global multi-platform presence across content, commerce, creators, and being at the forefront of e-commerce, adtech, and NFTs, including the metaverse, is a compelling investment with the potential to create significant value.”

Nielsen will introduce its newest advancement, Nielsen ONE Alpha deduplicate ad measurement, this week. Alpha is the first iteration of Nielsen ONE, which will continue to evolve leading up to its launch in 4Q22. Nielsen ONE Alpha will be specific to ad campaigns, an across-platform measurement system that offers comparability and audience deduplication across all screens. Disney and MAGNA have joined several agencies, advertisers and publishers as Nielsen ONE Alpha participants from both the buy and sell sides of the industry.

Meta offered a look at the progress of Bulletin, which offers content from independent creators. Since its launch at the end of June, Bulletin has grown to 115 creators, with more than half of them boasting at least 1,000 free email subscribers and some with at least 5,000, or 10,000. “This group of writers reflects a diverse cross section of expertise and interests, ranging from local news writers to fashion, food, science and sports,” said Campbell Brown, VP, Global News Partnerships and Ben Peskoe, Product Manager, Bulletin. “Most importantly, we’ve seen the reach and community-building power of Meta’s platforms help these publications and independent creators connect with audiences, and each other, in a number of exciting ways.”

Pixellot, a provider of AI-automated sports video and analytics solutions, is now operating in the UAE. The company has partnered with Dubai-based CAM Plus Sport to enable amateur sports clubs and schools to create broadcast quality live streams and on-demand recordings of sports matches.

The Global Measurement Alliance, a coalition spearheaded by Tubular Labs, announced LADbible Group from the UK and ZDF from Germany as new members. These additions continue a global expansion of collaboration aimed to unite brands, agencies and publishers around the world to establish standards for video measurement across social media platforms.

Synamedia announced its participation in the Howard NEXTGEN TV Broadcast Collaborative established by Pearl TV. WHUT, the first public broadcast television station owned by and licensed to an HBCU, will be the host station for NEXTGEN TV local channel broadcasts. As a part of the collaborative effort, Synamedia provided its multi-processing platform the vDCM, to add core functionality of HEVC encoding, DASH packaging, statistical multiplexing, and DRM security.

CES

The annual gathering of the tech industry – in person and virtually – kicks off this week. While record reported Covid cases led some exhibitors to curtail travel plans, over 2000 companies are expected to be on hand. What are the products and services that will generate excitement in 2022? Experts weigh in.

“At CES 2022, we expect to see a lot of innovation in the TV space – from the devices themselves to the technical features built into them. Display Technologies are advancing faster than ever before – clearly evident in the latest large screen Televisions, incredible Mobile and Virtual displays and soon a new generation of Cinema screens. We used to talk about ‘retina’ resolutions, ‘high dynamic range’ and ‘wide color gamut’ technologies. Now, new Motion solutions are enabling filmmakers to deliver the next level of amazing visuals that take full advantage of these displays, which we see being a big focus at this year’s show.” – Richard Miller, EVP, Technology, Pixelworks

“With both high-end and budget TV manufacturers continuing to double down on putting faster and more powerful chipsets in their Smart TV’s, I envision: A significantly larger spotlight being cast on the device’s ‘owned & operated’ streaming apps/channels; and a new approach to users being to use in-built cameras & microphones to have a truly immersive experience with the content they’re watching (imagine live streaming a concert or attending a virtual church service from your living room, but being able to ‘join’ the experience).” – Fred Godfrey, CEO, Origin
“Covid or no Covid, Hybrid is here to stay. Any technology that automates workflows and enables the real-time organization of information – specifically video – to power discovery and collaboration among teams, will continue to be in hot demand. Video has officially become the new language of business – those who tap technology to leverage it and the innate data in it, will win.” – Gil Becker, President and CEO, AnyClip

“After two years of disruption-by-necessity, CES 2022 will present a strong opportunity to look at what innovations that came to the forefront during the pandemic will stick, and for decisionmakers to place their focus on how they will drive their businesses forward. What lessons can entertainment companies learn from gaming and tech businesses to build rewards and loyalty programs that are best suited to their fans? What is the best way to connect with fans via the collectibles market and NFTs?” – Miheer Walavalkar, Co-founder and CEO, LiveLike

“There is a wealth of opportunity for CTV advertising related to programmatic, addressability, identity and contextual targeting. The industry is working toward identity-based solutions to enable privacy-safe addressability across a growing number of platforms and programs and I expect we’ll see more innovation using universal IDs. On the contextual side, I anticipate artificial intelligence will play a growing role in improving the CTV viewing and advertising experience. It will also open doors for interactive viewing applications and integrated e-commerce on CTV.” – Diana Horowitz, SVP, Advertising Sales, fuboTV

“Today life is what happens when we are on our phones and that is why content needs to not only be created for it, but also for today’s multicultural audience consuming on it. Content for Gen Z needs to be both video- and social-first; meaning short, but meaningful, authentic and diverse.” – Emiliano Saccone, CEO and co-founder of Cocina
