Cynopsis: Kids!

11/01/06

Good morning. It’s  Wednesday, November  1, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Diary entry, October 31, 2006
“I’ve now got a third title.  I’ve been thinking back, and I know that I’ve had more titles than this for a couple of the previous books, so I’m not too worried by this.  Title three currently ahead by a short nose, or perhaps that should be a vowel and two consonants.”  And there you have it, that is the latest word form author J.K. Rowling, ever so appropriately posted on Halloween on her website ( www.jkrowling.com ), on the topic of what the title of her seventh, and final, Harry Potter book is to be.

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. has reported its 3Q 2006 revenue of $55.6 million with its net income at $10.5 millions.  While the 3Q earnings fell from $87.1 million the same period last year the company still beat analyst predictions, thanks in large part to its movie Madagascar ($24.1 million in revenue, primarily DVD sales), and the sale of pay-TV rights to Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit ($17.2 million), as well as the theatrical release of Over the Hedge ($325 million in box office receipts worldwide).  DreamWorks is set to release its new CG animated movie collaboration with Aardman Animation, Flushed Away, this Friday, November 3, 2006.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

DreamWorks Animation has decided to move Puss in Boots, a spin-off from the Shrek franchise, from a direct-to-video release to a theatrical release.  Overall DreamWorks explained that it has shifted away from its direct-to-video strategy “due to current market conditions,” and will instead move towards partnering with Paramount and Nickelodeon.  To that end, DreamWorks and Nickelodeon are developing ongoing animated TV series based on DreamWorks’ movies, the first featuring the penguins from Madagascar and the other based on the upcoming feature Kung Fu Panda, which is slated for theatrical release in 2008.  DreamWorks officially unveiled its theatrical release schedule for 2009 from projects currently on its development slate: Monsters vs. Aliens (working title), an original DreamWorks Animation concept, is set for summer 2009; How to Train Your Dragon, based on the book by Cressida Cowell, is scheduled for release for the 2009 fall/holiday season.  As for Shrek 4 … hello 2010.

The long awaited confirmation about the would-be live-action feature film adaptation of the Speed Racer Cartoon has come.  The never-ending speculation and rumors have proven true with Larry and Andy Wachowski, the brothers who brought us the Matrix movies, indeed set to write and direct the live-action Speed Racer, says The Hollywood Reporter.  Targeted to kids/families, the Warner Bros. movie is expected to begin shooting next summer 2007 for a 2008 release.  Joel Silver will produce.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon will run a 24-hr SpongeBob SquarePants marathon beginning Thursday, November 9 at 8p.  The marathon will be hosted by Patchy the Pirate (aka Tom Kenny, who also lends his voice to SpongeBob) as he cruises around the isle of Manhattan counting down viewers’ top 100 SpongeBob episode picks.  Patchy will also be joined by various celebrities throughout the event.  The marathon will culminate with the debut of Best Day Ever, a new SpongeBob special on Friday, November 10 at 7:30p, which will be followed by the network premiere of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, the Paramount Pictures/Nickelodeon Movies feature film, at 8p.  For five weeks (from October 5) fans have been invited to vote for their 10 most favorite episodes of SpongeBob, at the super-site www.nick.com/bestdayever , by viewing clips from episodes of the series that has so far resulted in upwards of 2.8 million streams and 3.8 million votes.  Fans will no doubt have prune skin by the end of the event.

Kuma Reality Games, a publisher/developer of episodic videogames, and The History Channel have joined to develop gaming and TV content.  The partnership gets underway this Friday, November 3, with the simultaneous launch of season two of The History Channel series Shootout! and Kuma’s release of corresponding videogames online, so viewers/gamers can watch the show first and then go online to play 3D CGI animated videogames featuring a re-creation of the same historical event from the TV show.  In this new season, episodes of the game are directly based on three historical events featured on the series: Iwo Jima, Battle of the Bulge and the Tet Offensive.  The online games will be available for download from www.historychannel.com for free immediately after each episode airs.  The goal of the joint TV/videogame effort is to provide viewers/players with the experience of being in the midst of a battle through the eyes of those who actually participated in the event.  Obviously the games are for history and gaming fans and not for the younger kids.

The Universal HD (UniHD) Thanksgiving holiday weekend schedule includes sports, movie marathons and dogs.  Throughout the month Thursday and Saturday on UniHD will be double feature night, and Fridays is X-Treme Friday Films (from 12a).

  • Thanksgiving Day beginning at 6a will feature The PlayStation Pro, the final stop on The 2006 Dew Action Sports Tour, followed at 7p by Arnold Schwarzenegger in Kindergarten Cop, Junior and Conan The Barbarian.
  • Friday, November 24, from 8p, movies Beethoven’s 2nd, Beethoven’s 5th and special episodes of Complete Savages.  From 12a, Conan The Barbarian, Apollo 13and U-571, and episodes of The Jeep World of Adventure Sports HD and The 2006 Dew Action Sports Tour.
  • Saturday, November 25, from 10p, movies About a Boy and Babe
  • Sunday, November 26, from 12p Hilton Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular, Stealing Christmas, Beethoven’s 2nd and Casper.  From 7p with Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Apollo 13 and Brazil.

STONE SOUP

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Crown Media Holdings, Inc., owner and operator of Hallmark Channel, today announced that Paul FitzPatrick, COO and EVP, has resigned from the company.  FitzPatrick joined Crown Media in 2000, and has served in his current role since 2001.  Henry Schleiff, Crown’s newly appointed President and CEO, credited FitzPatrick with building the Hallmark Channel from 16 million subs to its current reach into 75 million HH.  FitzPatrick oversaw Hallmark Channel’s distribution, network operations, IT and human resources as well as serving as Crown Media’s primary conduit with industry associations and Capitol Hill concerning issues of public policy.  Previously, FitzPatrick was COO, the Golf Channel and was President, CEO and Founder of News Talk Television.

Scott Guthrie has been named SVP/North American Sales and Distribution, THQ Inc.  Guthrie will manage the company’s North American sales, retail marketing, sales planning and operations teams, which serves retailers throughout the US, Canada and Mexico.  Guthrie will report directly to Brian Farrell, President and CEO, THQ.  Prior to his appointment Guthrie has been serving as a sales and operations management consultant to THQ since January of this year.  Previously, Guthrie held multiple roles at Buena Vista Home Entertainment over a period of 10-yrs, most recently as the SVP/Sales and Distribution.

RATINGS

October 2006 has become Disney Channel’s most watched October ever for the channel in Primetime for K6-11 (1.21 million), Tweens 9-14 (1.12 million) and Total Viewers (2.87 million).  Helping to achieve that goal was the network’s premiere of its original movie Return to Halloweentown (10/20/06, 8-9:50p), which was the most watched telecast across basic cable and broadcast amongst K6-11 (3.24 million) and Tweens 9-14 (2.88 million).
