After airing two episodes of its dating show, 3 which delivered low ratings, CBS canceled the show.  The network will air drama repeats at 9p on Sundays starting next week until The Good Wife debuts its new season on September 30.  3 premiered on July 26 with a preview episode drawing 2.4 million viewers and a 0.8 rating among A18-49 before moving to its Sunday slot this past weekend which declined further to 1.8 million total viewers and a 0.5 demo rating.

FX and producer Ryan Murphy unveiled yesterday the title of the new chapter of American Horror Story as American Horror Story: Asylum.  The plot is set in 1964 and stars headlining the next installment include Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Zachary Quinto, James Cromwell and Joseph Fiennes.  Principal photography commenced on July 17 and it will premiere in October.  Twentieth Century Fox Television is producing.

Starring comedian and radio host, Rickey Smiley, TV One premieres The Rickey Smiley Show September 18 along with an all-star cast including Ray J, J. Anthony Brown, Lil JJ, Roz Ryan, Noree Victoria and Demetria McKinney.  The show is based loosely on the life of Rickey Smiley, a local DJ based in Atlanta who is a single father to three children.  The series is produced by Bobbcat Films for TV One.

The second season of HBO’s comedy Girls from Lena Dunham will debut in January along with Enlightened helmed by Laura Dern.  Both series will have 10 episodes.

Well before Halloween, Travel Channel serves up new series and a special as part of its second annual Weekends to Die For programming showcase airing Fridays through Sundays in October.  The programming event is preceded by season premieres of several series: a seventh season of Ghost Adventures with 12 episodes bows on September 14 at 9p produced by My Tupelo Entertainment; Paranormal Paparazzi launches as an all-new original series with eight half-hour eps beginning September 28 at 7p, also produced by My Tupelo Entertainment; Making Monsters is back for a second season starting September 30 at 8p with two back-to-back eps airing each week produced by Warm Springs Productions; new one-hour episodes of The Dead Files in its second season continue as of October 5 at 10p produced by Painless Entertainment, Inc.; and the original one-hour special Halloween Crazier produced by Sharp Entertainment is set for October 14 at 10p.

New bridal series, I Found the Gown unveils its first episodes on TLC August 24 at 10p and 1030p.  The eight-episode series is about brides as they shop for their dream dresses at the Boston-based bridal outlet VOWS.  I Found the Gown is produced by Half Yard Productions, producers of the network’s Say Yes to the Dress franchise.

Animal Planet snapped up a second season of Gator Boys starring Paul Bedard and Jimmy Riffle who capture alligators with their bare hands.  During its first season, Gator Boys averaged close to 1 million total viewers.  In its second season airing next year, Paul and Jimmy will move to a new location, Gulf Coast Gator Ranch in Moss Point, Mississippi where they find the alligators are bigger and meaner than those the guys have encountered to date.  Mike Mathis Productions is behind the series.

Docu-series Renovation Realities, produced by RIVR Media has been renewed for a 10th season on DIY Network.  The series highlights real people as they renovate their homes with no outside help.

Author, playwright, essayist, screenwriter and political activist, Eugene Luther Gore Vidal died at the age of 86 Tuesday night at his home in the Hollywood Hills.  Mr. Vidal was a contemporary to other literary greats such as Norman Mailer and Truman Capote and was also a major celebrity who became a fixture on talk shows and gossip columns.  His works include hundreds of essays and best-selling novels such as Lincoln, Myra Breckenridge, The City and the Pillar and the Tony-nominated play, The Best Man which is currently experiencing a popular revival on Broadway.  Mr. Vidal additionally wrote for television and was best known for penning the play Visit to a Small Planet for the Goodyear Television Playhouse in 1955.  A year before in 1954, he wrote Dark Possession, a Studio One drama starring Geraldine Fitzgerald.  CBS’ Studio One was an anthology series presenting a different drama each week.

Comedy writer from TV’s Golden Age, Sidney Reznick, died last Friday in Los Angeles, five days before his 93rd birthday.  Mr. Reznick was a staff writer for The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and he was on stage when Tiny Tim (known for the song Tiptoe Through the Tulips) wed Victoria Mae Budinger (aka Miss Vicki) on the late-show in December 1969.  In 1957, Mr. Reznick created the comedic game show Sez Who? and also was on the staff of I’ve Got a Secret in the 1960s and wrote episodes of the television shows Beetle Bailey, Love, American Style, The Love Boat and The Odd Couple.  He also wrote jokes for the likes of Jimmy Durante and Bob Hope and early in his career worked in radio with Al Jolson, Ethel Merman and Steve Allen among others. Mr. Reznick is survived by his sons, Bruce and Robert and two grandchildren.

Programming note: TV One Network is extending its tribute to the late Sherman Hemsley, star of The Jeffersons with back-to-back episodes of Mr. Hemsley’s second series, Amen this Friday from 8 to 11p.

Clarifications:  Showtime’s TV Everywhere app, Showtime Anytime is live now and available through Comcast’s Xfinity TV, AT&T, Verizon FiOS as well as apps for iPhones and iPads.  Showtime has plans to expand the app to additional distributors next year.

The second season of TV Guide Network’s Nail Files debuts at 9p (followed by a second new episode at 930p) on August 19.  The new season also kicks off with a ten-city tour with dates and cities found at the show’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/TVGuideNetwork

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Current TV is working on a new as yet-titled primetime show starring commentator/comedian John Fugelsang with his perspective on political and cultural current topics.  The announcement was made yesterday morning during a live broadcast of Talking Liberally: The Stephanie Miller Show as part of the network’s TCA summer press tour.  Over the recent past, Fugelsang has appeared as guest host for other Current TV programs including The War Room with Jennifer Granholm, Viewpoint with Eliot Spitzer and Talking Liberally: The Stephanie Miller Show.  Fugelsang’s new program will roll out this fall and until then he will continue to appear as a guest host and commentator on the network’s shows.

Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel The Three Musketeers is the inspiration for a new BBC America drama series, The Musketeers written by Adrian Hodges (My Week with Marilyn, Survivors, Primeval).  The series is a contemporary take about a band of highly trained soldiers who are assigned to protect king and country though will still be set in the 17th century like Dumas’ original story.  The series, sporting a fresh story each week, was approved for 10 one-hour episodes launching in 2014.  The Musketeers is a BBC Drama Production for BBC One, co-produced by BBC American and BBC Worldwide.  Jessica Pope serves as EP.

Melanie Griffith was cast in a multiple episodes for the third season of Raising Hope on FOX.  Griffith will play Sabrina’s (Shannon Woodward) mother.  In addition, Griffith’s real-life mother, Tippi Hedren will guest star in the season three premiere of Raising Hope as Sabrina’s dead grandmother, Nana.

Former Will & Grace star, Sean Hayes is joining NBC’s second season comedy Up All Night as Ava’s (Maya Rudolph) former accompanist.  He will appear in multiple episodes.

A workplace drama is in the works at FOX from House EPs Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner set in a naval aircraft carrier, reports THR.  The untitled project will be produced by 20th Century Fox Television where Friends and Lerner have a two-year overall deal.  This new project received a script commitment plus penalty.

For the third season of unscripted series Gigolos on Showtime, the cast including Nick, Vin, Brace and Steven are returning and will be joined by new cast mate, Ash.  Gigolos premieres August 30 at 11p with 10 episodes.

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Chellomedia and CBS Studios International forged a new deal to create CBS-branded channels from Chello Zone’s existing roster of channels in 83 territories throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa.  This new deal expands a similar move in the UK for CBS-branded channels that the two companies launched in November 2009.  Like the UK venture, channels from Chellomedia’s international broadcaster unit, Chello Zone will be rebranded and reprogrammed as CBS Reality, CBS Drama and CBS Action.  Each of these three channels will have a unique single or even multi-territory range with a collective reach of 43 million subscribers in the 83 territories.  Programming from CBS’ television library will populate the new CBS Chello Zone channels including current shows such as 48 Hours, Judge Judy and America’s Next Top Model to classic TV programs like Dynasty, Star Trek and Touched By an Angel.  CBS will hold a 30% stake in the channels, in addition to offering its programming and trademark.  Chello Zone will continue to operate the channels though under a new board consisting of representatives from CBS and Chello Zone to spearhead strategy and direction.
