4/19/07

Good morning, it’s Thursday, April 19, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

NBC received a package Wednesday morning via US Mail at its 30 Rockefeller Center headquarters in New York from Cho Seung-Hui, the 23-year old man who killed 32 people at Virginia Tech on Monday. The package contained a long, rambling letter, videos and photographs an appears to have been sent in the two hours between the first and second shootings. The network turned the original package over to the FBI immediately and kept a copy of the contents. NBC News has been reviewing the contents, which anchor Brian Williams called a “multimedia manifesto”, and has plans to broadcast portions of it during NBC Nightly News.

~ MORE STUFF ~

CBS will debut Creature Comforts on June 4 at 8p. The American version of the British half-hour stop-motion animated series is based on the original Academy Award-winning short film created by Nick Park and Aardman Animations, Ltd., the team that also produced Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. The show takes real person interviews about everyday events and topics and through animation places the responses in the mouths of various animals.

Kitty Carlisle Hart, 96, died Tuesday in her New York home. She was best known as an actress and panelist on the CBS game show To Tell the Truth which originally ran from 1956 to 1968. She was married to Broadway theater playwright and director Moss Hart from 1946 until his death in 1961. Her career began on Broadway in Rio Rita in 1932, followed by appearances in the films Murder at the Vanities in 1934 and in the 1935 A Night at the Opera with the Marx Bros. where she sang. Later, she was a member and chairman of the New York Council of the Arts and in recent years performed a one-woman show around the country. She is survived by her two children and three grandchildren.

CBS Corporation and Liberty Media Corporation have completed their previously announced exchange agreement. The terms include CBS gaining back CBS Corp. Class B Common stock held by Liberty Media in exchange for the stock of a subsidiary which owns CBS Corp.’s Green Bay television station and nearly $170 million in cash. Because of this transaction, CBS Corp. has retired 7.6 million of its shares thus reducing outstanding shares by 1%.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Pirate Master, the new reality series on CBS set to debut May 31 at 8p, has a new captain –  Australian actor Cameron Daddo has been recruited to host. The series, produced by Mark Burnett Productions, will send 16 modern-day pirates on a 33-day high seas adventure where they search for hidden treasure valued at $1 million around the Caribbean island of Dominica. Cameron will distribute clues each week and some of the players will be awarded real gold coins, but each week all will convene at Pirate’s Court where one will be eliminated. The final player to find the largest treasure trove worth $500,000 will be crowned Pirate Master.

Lisa Rinna has been signed by TV Guide Network to be the new face of their Red Carpet coverage, replacing Joan Rivers and daughter Melissa Rivers.   She has been signed to host five pre-event red carpet shows each year, as well as five post-event fashion reviews.  First up – the Emmys in September.

Bravo has ordered a docu-drama pilot project called The Beauty Foundation about celebrity make-up artist Billy Brasfield (Billy B.). The project will follow his jet-set lifestyle involving celebrities as well as his restoration projects where he’s rebuilding his small Mississippi hometown. World of Wonder will produce the pilot.

Comedy Central has ordered a pilot project called Michael Ian Black Doesn’t Understand, a project that will include sketch comedy, taped segments and in-studio bits, all performed with or by Black, says Variety.
