Cynopsis: Kids!

10/20/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, October 20, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Having shut down the publication of the print version of ElleGirl magazine with the June/July 2006 issues, publisher Hachette Filipacchi Media will officially relaunch Ellegirl.com on Monday, October 23, 2006, putting the focus on the online community and the user experience.  The redesigned site will feature an array of content available via different digital platforms, such as daily mobile text alerts and online video, editorial content (updated daily) and a new online section where teens will be able to customize various areas and content on the site.  Target serves as the exclusive advertiser of new technology for the first month following the launch off the new site.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Prepare to welcome back the Fraggles, Doozers, Gorgs, The Trash Heap and Philo and Gunge, The Blob and the rest of the Jim Henson’s Fraggle Rock characters/creatures in a new full-length movie that is currently being developed by The Jim Henson Company.  The treatment for the movie is being penned by Ahmet Zappa, who will also serve as executive producer of the movie with Brian Henson and Jason Lust, with Lisa Henson producing.  The plot of the movie (title and dates tbd) will see Gobo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober and Red adventuring outside of Fraggle Rock for the first time.  The movie will continue in the tradition of the original Fraggle Rock TV series, which focused on embracing diversity, resolving conflict and promoting world peace.  Pretty good timing huh?

Jeremy Piven and Molly Shannon have joined the voice cast of Exodus Film Group’s CG-animated movie comedy Igor, which will be distributed by The Weinstein Company.  Piven will lend his voice to the not too bright mad scientist, Dr. Schadenfreude, while Shannon will play Eva, a giant indestructible monster invented by Schadenfreude’s assistant Igor.  The story revolves around Igor, a lab assistant with a dream to become a scientist himself and win the top prize at the Evil Science Fair.  Igor will be directed by Tony Leondis from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and produced by Jon D. Eraklis and Max Howard.  The cast also includes Christian Slater as the voice to the title character, Igor; Buscemi as Scamper, a smart and bad tempered lab rabbit; with John Cleese lending his voice to Dr. Glickenstein.

Jonathan Pryce and Bill Paterson have been cast to star as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson respectively, in the new TV project, Baker Street Irregulars.  Produced by RDF Television for the BBC One and CBBC, The Baker Street Irregulars is a new Sherlock Holmes mystery targeted to families.  The Irregulars were a rag-tag bunch of street kids who on occasion helped Holmes now and again, and made their first appearance in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1887 Sherlock Holmes mystery titled, A Study in Scarlet.  Production is set to begin next week in Dublin on the original two-part mystery, Baker Street Irregulars, written by Richard Kurti and Bev Doyle.  RDF Television is a unit of RDF Media Group, and RDF Rights hold all international and ancillary rights to Baker Street Irregulars.

MORE KIDS STUFF

BT, the UK-based telecommunications company, has inked new VOD deals with Nickelodeon, MTV and Paramount Comedy that will see their respective programming content available on BT Vision, the new TV service that is set to launch in the UK this fall.  Under the agreements, BT Vision users will be able have VOD access to programming including Nick’s SpongeBob SquarePants, Rugrats and Drake and Josh, MTV’s Punk’d, Pimp My Ride, and Dirty Sanchez, as well as from Comedy Central’s Comedy Store, Jongleurs Unleashed and The World Stands Up.  BT Vision is designed to allow viewers to watch what they want, when they want, through a set-top box that will deliver the programming via a Microsoft software platform.  Similar deals for BT Vision have been made with a variety of content providers including Dreamworks, BBC Worldwide, Warner Music Group, National Geographic Channel and Turner Broadcasting among numerous others.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Hit Entertainment has teamed up with Junk Food, a junior clothing company, to create a new line of retro Barney T-shirts; no really, seriously.  The Junk Food/Barney shirts will be available at special stores later this fall.

STONE SOUP

Animal Planet kicks off its new national animal advocacy campaign, R.O.A.R. (Reach Out. Act. Respond.), this week together with a range of well known animal and environmental groups including: The American Humane Association (AHA); The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA); the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA); the Earthwatch Institute; EcoZone; The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS); the National Wildlife Federation (NWF); Roots & Shoots, a program of the Jane Goodall Institute; Wildlife Warriors; and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).  In the initial phase, the effort will support a series of animal causes: the importance of spaying/neutering pets; shelter adoption; cruelty prevention; animal healthcare; conservation; pet well-being; youth action for animals; and protection of endangered species.  The first on-air spot, which began airing yesterday, features the network’s talent, including Jeff Corwin, Dr. Jane Goodall, Annemarie Lucas (Animal Precinct) and Drs. Holly Knor and Kevin Fitzgerald (Emergency Vets).  PSAs supporting each of the R.O.A.R. partners will begin rolling out in 2007. ( http://www.animalplanet.com/ROAR )
