Cynopsis: Kids!

04/08/11

Good morning. It’s Friday, April 8, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Lionsgate, Varsity Pictures and The Collective joining to co-produce the 3D feature film Night of the Living Fred, based on the popular Fred Figglehorn internet character created by teen Lucas Cruikshank.  Directed by John Fortenberry (Blue Mountain State, among other series), from a script by David A. Goodman (Family Guy), production on the movie has already begun in LA.  The Night of the Living Fred movie is a follow-up to TV movie, Fred: The Movie, which premiered on Nickelodeon (September 18, 2010) where it earned record ratings.

Scholastic enters into a worldwide feature film representation deal with The Gotham Group.  The pact covers all books for which the Scholastic Trade Publishing division holds the movie and TV rights, including titles in its current catalogs and backlist.  Scholastic Media (The Golden Compass, The 39 Clues) retains its first look position on any Scholastic published properties.  Gotham represents a wide range of source material from major publishers and comic book companies, including works from Bloomsbury/Walker US, Dark Horse Entertainment, Penguin Group, Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins (US & UK), Village Voice Media, Houghton Mifflin/Harcourt, SAF Comics, and Com.x, among others.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Starz Animation Toronto (Gnomeo and Juliet), Multiple Media Entertainment (MME), and Gigapix Studios are set to begin production on the stereoscopic CG animated feature film, OZ3D (working title), a humorous and modern adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s classic book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.  Budgeted at $20 million, the movie will be directed by Rob Silvestri (Ormie, and he worked on Gnomeo & Juliet as well as the Tim Burton’s animated movie 9) from a script penned by Connor Pritchard (Co-creator TV series Workaholics).  Michael Taylor and Drew Craig, both of MME, will executive produce the movie.  Worldwide distribution for the film will be handled by MME. MME and Gigapix have entered into a US representation deal with Gigapix Studios’ distribution company, Gigapix Releasing, securing through its newly formed P&A fund, a minimum commitment of $10MM for a theatrical release on a minimum 1,000 screens.

The Jim Henson Company teams with preschool TV channel Sprout and Northern Ireland’s Sixteen South Limited to co-produce a new long-form version of the musical puppet preschool series Pajanimals.  The new Pajanimals (26×30 or 52×11) series will air exclusively in the US on Sprout, where it will launch in fall 2011.  Production on Pajanimals will begin immediately in Northern Ireland, with funding assistance from Northern Ireland Screen.  The Jim Henson Company is handling all ancillary use of the property including licensing, video and merchandising.  The Jim Henson Company’s CEO Lisa Henson and EVP/Children’s Entertainment Halle Stanford will serve as Executive Producers for the series, along with long-time Henson producer, Alex Rockwell (Bear in the Big Blue House, Elmo in Grouchland) and Jeff Muncy. Serving as Executive Producer for Sprout will be SVP/Programming Andrew Beecham. Sixteen South’s Colin Williams (Big City Park, Sesame Tree) will serve as producer for the series.  Additionally, the series will feature music composed by Michael and Patty Silversher (Winnie the Pooh, Animal Jam, Dinosaur Train).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Broadcast deals have been inked for The Governator, the new kid-targeted comic, TV, and 3D movie property with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Stan Lee and his Pow! Entertainment, and Archie Comics, officially introduced earlier this week at MIPTV in Cannes.  Just off the plane from Cannes, Andy Heyward, co-founder and CEO, A2 Entertainment, continues to buzz about his experience of introducing the property.  Working with Your Family Entertainment, Heyward says they have completed sales for The Governator including an exclusive broadcast deal with RTL2 (Germany), and deals with ORF (Austria), and SRF (Switzerland), as well as with Cartoon Network Latin America, including Brazil.  Further TV deals are expected to be announced soon.    As for a US broadcaster deal for The Governator? They are speaking to a number of broadcasters.

The BBC orders a second season of the arts and crafts series Mister Maker Comes to Town from The Foundation, part of Zodiak Kids, for Cbeebies.  The Foundation will begin production this May 2011 on the new season of Mister Maker Comes to Town (25×20) and a Christmas special.  International deals confirmed at MIPTV for Mister Maker Comes to Town season 1 includes ABC TV (Australia) and Thai PBS with other international deals currently in the works.  Mister Maker Comes to Town is a spin-off of the Cbeebies program Mister Maker.

Indie production company Wide-Eyed Entertainment (WEE) completes the sale of its family-targeted CGI animated show March of the Dinosaurs (1×90) to ITV1 (UK) for ITV1 and ITV1 HD.  Produced over two years, March of the Dinosaurs steps back 70 million years when dinosaurs lived in the Arctic.  The show follows a young dinosaur as he makes his way on a 1,000 mile migration to escape a harsh polar winter.  March of the Dinosaurs is a Wide-Eyed Entertainment MOD co-production with Yap Dinosaur Productions for History Television Canada, NGC, SuperRTL, France Television and FremantleMedia.

Nickelodeon‘s Nick News with Linda Ellerbee will address freedom of religious beliefs in the US in the special Freedom to Believe…or Not, which will air on the network Sunday, April 17 at 9p.  The half-hour special features kids from various backgrounds and different parts of the country where they are facing discrimination for what they and their families believe, as well as commentary from Pat Robertson, founder of the Christian Broadcast Network and host of The 700 Club, and Barry Lynn, executive director/Americans United for Separation of Church and State.  Also featured is the Massachusetts-based group, Interfaith Action.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Hasbro and Ruckus Mobile Media ink a strategic digital publishing licensing deal that will see them jointly develop interactive storybook apps based on Hasbro brands across all digital platforms, including Apple and Android platforms.  The first three kid’s storybook apps, Tonka Chuck and Friends, My Little Pony, and Transformers Prime, will roll out from May 2011.  The new storybook apps are designed to extend Hasbro’s play experiences and activities, including coloring and read-and-record functions, encourage shared reading experiences, and will incorporate touch-screen technology.  Hasbro has granted Ruckus Mobile Media the worldwide rights in English speaking markets.

comiXology, a distributor of digital comics, releases its Comics4Kids app for iOS devices.  Specifically designed for young readers, Comics4Kids features upwards of 175 comics, such as Archie, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Atomic Robo, from 15 publishers, including Archie Comics, Image Comics and GKids (Secret of Kells), Bluewater Comics, Devils Due, Dynamite, among others.  The app is available for free download at the iTunes store.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) signs Jennette McCurdy (iCarly, Capital Records Nashville recording artist) to serve as the spokesperson for the girl-targeted Rebecca Bonbon fashion and lifestyle brand, which are available exclusively at Kmart and Sears in North America.  Jennette will be featured as part of the Rebecca Bonbon 2011 back-to-school marketing program in the US and Canada.  Crown Creative granted FME the exclusive master licensing rights to Rebecca Bonbon in 2008.  Rebecca Bonbon was created by Japan’s Yuko Shimizu, the original creator of Hello Kitty.
