09/22/16: Big Ten hoops ready to roll; ESPN sweets 16 to honor Phil Knight; Clippers punch another Ticket

Good morning. It’s Thursday September 22, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The Big Ten’s TV slate for the 2016-17 men’s basketball conference games is out with coverage set to begin Dec. 27 as four contests tip off on ESPN2 featuring Illinois/Maryland, Michigan State/Minnesota. Northwestern/Penn State and Rutgers/Wisconsin. CBS Sports begins its slate on Jan. 8 with Wisconsin/Purdue. Overall, CBS Sports will carry eight games on Sundays throughout the conference season, including wildcard selections on Feb. 19, Feb. 26 and March 5, not to mention the semifinals and championship game on March 11 and 12. The ESPN portion of the package see the conference featured on one of its networks on Tuesdays at 7 or 9p as part of the network’s Super Tuesday lineup. ESPN or ESPN2 will also carry Big Ten games as part of the network’s Thursday Night Showcase.

ON THE AIR

Speaking of college hoops, ESPN announced the creation of PK80, aka Phil Knight Invitational. The early season tournament will see 16 teams compete in Portland over Thanksgiving week in 2017 in honor of the Nike founder, who will be celebrating 80 years. Participating schools include Arkansas, Butler, Connecticut, Duke, Florida, Georgetown, Gonzaga, Michigan State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Portland, Portland State, Stanford and Texas. “On behalf of the 16 schools participating in PK80, we are honored to be highlighting Mr. Knight’s contributions to college basketball,” said Clint Overby, VP, ESPN Events. “The strength of the field coupled with the two venues in Portland set the stage for what should be an exciting weekend.”

NBC Sports Group announced hit its second consecutive season of record Verizon IndyCar Series viewership in 2016, reaching more than 6.5 million total viewers overall. Coverage averaged 488,000 viewers spanning 10 weekend races, which ranks as its second most-watched IndyCar season since 2009, behind last year’s average of 507,000. Digitally, the season on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app delivered 6.7 million minutes streamed and 89,000 uniques, both records for the company.

MLB Network will showcase Vin Scully’s last game call from Dodger Stadium on Sunday at 4p when the Rockies visit the team. In tribute, MLB Network will simulcast SportsNet LA’s production of the game, which will be blacked out on the channel in the Rockies’ and Dodgers’ home television territories.

BTN announced that it scored the highest rated games across all cable networks in the network’s 12 metered markets in both the noon and 3:30p windows. Colorado/Michigan led the way with a 2.3 HH rating in the 3:30p slot, while Temple/Penn State and Georgia State/Wisconsin delivered a 1.1 HH rating at noon. Meanwhile, the Michigan game also became the most-watched game in BTN2Go history with 207,000 video views.

The LA Clippers locked in new ties with FOX Sports Prime Ticket in an exclusive multi-year broadcast rights agreement that will see Prime Ticket broadcast all regular season games not selected by a national broadcaster for exclusive telecast, first-round post-season Clippers games, as well as selected pre-season games. All games televised by Prime Ticket will again be made available for streaming on FOX Sports GO to customers with a pay-TV subscription. In addition, the Clippers announced that the team will be conducting in-market tests for “new, innovative digital offerings on a trial basis to a targeted number of fans.”

Pac-12 Networks announced its women’s basketball telecast schedule with 100 total games set to run across all seven networks as well as 10 games of the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Tournament. Each Pac-12 program will appear on the Networks at least 10 times, tipping off on Nov. 18 with Gonzaga/Stanford at 7p.

Delta Air Lines and UCLA locked in a three-year sponsor deal involving the airline, the university and the Rose Bowl in an agreement that will see the airline serve as the Official Airline of UCLA Athletics, the Alumni Association of the University of California, Los Angeles and the Rose Bowl Stadium. The UCLA agreement mark’s Delta’s first with a West Coast college under the airline’s new university partnership strategy launched last year. 

DIGITAL & STREAMING

The NFL is opening the doors to Super Bowl tickets, with On Location Experiences, the official hospitality partner of the league announcing the sale of premium ticket packages for Super Bowl LI in Houston via OLE’s new online platform: superbowl.nflonlocation.com. For the first time, guests can select and reserve their exact seat location and pair it with experiences that include pre- and post-game parties, the on-field celebration following the Lombardi Trophy presentation, and meet and greets with NFL Legends. Package options begin at $5,599.

ONE World Sports is debuting JP & Shep  Soccer’s Pod Couple as a podcast that features JP Dellacamera and Shep Messing discussing and debating the game. The series can be downloaded from ONEWorldSports.com and Apple’s itunes.
