06/07/19: NBA Finals numbers have mixed results; Women’s World Cup Kicks Into Gear

Game three of the NBA Finals on ABC Wednesday night delivered its highest OOH ratings for the tournament so far, averaging 7.2 million OOH viewers, according to Tunity Analytics.  Games one and two averaged more than 6.8MM and 5.9MM OOH viewers, respectively.
 
With only one U.S. based team in the finals this year, the game three average is still down -25% from last year’s game three average of 9.6MM. Viewership peaked at 10 PM with an OOH audience of 9MM, down -19% from the 2018 peak at 11:25 PM. This year’s audience was 58.6% A25-54 compared to 61% in 2018, and skewed 73% male, versus 76% in 2018.
 
 
ON THE AIR
 
Univision Deportes announced that nearly 22.2 million Total Viewers 2+ tuned in to all or part of its 91 UEFA Champions League telecasts, making it the most-watched season on any network or in any language during UD’s inaugural season as the exclusive Spanish-language television partner. In total, Univision delivered 60% of the UCL television audience in the U.S. The performance marks the first time since 2013-14 that the league’s Spanish-language telecasts attracted a higher audience share than English-language. For the season, matches airing on Univision and simulcast on Univision Deportes Network (UDN) averaged 631,000 Total Viewers 2+ and 314,000 Adults 18-49. Meanwhile, across the Univision Deportes linear portfolio – including Univision, UniMás, Univision Deportes Network (UDN) and Galavisión – UCL contests generated an average of 231,000 Total Viewers 2+ and 120,000 Adults 18-49. This season’s matches out-delivered the previous season’s Spanish-language telecasts by +32% among Total Viewers 2+ and +9% with Adults 18-49.
 
Telemundo’s Spanish-language coverage of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup France begins today with pregame coverage of the Opening Match between France and South Korea, starting at 1:30 p.m. ET, with the game airing at 2:30 p.m. ET and followed by a post-game special. Telemundo Deportes’ Andres Cantor, Manuel Sol and guest analyst Viviana Villa will be calling all the action live and in-venue at Parc des Princes for the opening ceremony and first matchup.
 
FOX Sports says that viewership of this year’s Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) telecasts has surged through the first five months of 2019 Go Bowling! PBA Tour competition. To date, 20,923,000 viewers have tuned in to watch PBA on FOX, FS1, or FS2, including repeats, up +85% over the total audience for the entire 2018 season (11,327,000 viewers).
 
SiriusXM will be the exclusive national radio broadcaster for the 119th U.S. Open Championship, offering listeners nationwide extensive coverage from Pebble Beach Golf Links in California. SiriusXM’s programming will feature 44 hours of live hole-by-hole coverage – more than ever before – across all four rounds of play from June 13th through the 16th, and will include a playoff, if one occurs. Live championship coverage will begin Thursday and Friday at 10:00 am ET/7:00 am PT and Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 pm ET/10:00 am PT on SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio (Sirius ch. 208, XM ch. 92).

DIGITAL AND STREAMING
 
FOX Sports will be offering all 52 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup France matches in 4k. This is the first time 4K content will be offered in the FOX Sports App, and the 4K content will also be available on select MVPDs (Fubo, DirecTV and others).
 

ESPORTS
 
ESPN has created EXP, an event series featuring esports competitions at ESPN-owned events. Through a collaboration with Electronic Arts, Apex Legends will continue the series, which kicked off in May at the first-ever Collegiate Esports Championship, at two ESPN events this summer: the 2019 ESPYS and X Games Minneapolis 2019. EXP competitions will be a mix of professional, collegiate and pro-am formats, with multiple game IP and genres featured across the series. Live event distribution will be via multiple digital platforms including the ESPN app, and a tape-delayed show focused on key moments. The storylines will debut across ESPN/ABC linear networks after each event.
 
Capcom’s mid-season finals for the inaugural season of Street Fighter League Pro: US 2019 will be held Friday, June 28 at 5:00, PDT at CEO. The Street Fighter League: Pro-US 2019 Mid-Season Final is the culmination of a double round robin tournament series featuring six teams and spanning 10 weeks of action. For the mid-season final, four teams will battle for a prize pool worth $57,000, with the top team taking $30,000. Second place will be awarded $15,000 and both third place teams will be awarded $6,000. Additionally, the two top teams will move to Season 2, where they will be joined by four new freshman teams.
 
WorldGaming Network announced the start of its second annual Rocket League esports tournament. Teams of three from the USA and Canada can now register for the Rocket League WGN North American Championship, a tournament that has more than $20,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs. The winner will receive $10,000 and will be awarded a spot to compete in the Rocket League Pro Circuit at Dreamhack Montreal.
 
ESP Gaming has rebranded to Estars Studios, with the goal of aligning with sister company Estars, an esports engagement platform. It will continue to deliver production for esports events and content.
 
The Philadelphia 76ers-owned esports organization Dignitas has merged with Houston Rockets-owned Clutch Gaming. It is believed to be the first merger of two NBA-owned esports franchises.
