PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
 
CBS gave series orders to comedies starring Damon Wayans Jr. and Cedric the Entertainer. The untitled Wayans show focuses on a couple who reconnect with their younger, hipper selves when an emerging pop star moves in, while Welcome to the Neighborhood follows a nice guy from the Midwest who moves into a rough LA area and finds an acerbic neighbor, played by Cedric. 
 
ABC gave a formal series order to The Rookie. Castle’s Nathan Fillion stars as the oldest rookie in the LAPD, reuniting him with Castle EP Alexi Hawley and ABC Studios. Hawley, Fillion and Entertainment One’s Mark Gordon EP with Michelle Chapman and Jon Steinberg.
 
Also picked up to series by ABC is A Million Little Things, from DJ Nash (Growing Up Fisher). Drama comes from ABC Studios and Kapital Entertainment.
 
FX and Hulu grabbed first-run North American rights to The Weekly, a documentary news program produced by the New York Times and Left/Right. Series premieres later this year on FX, with Hulu holding exclusive day-after streaming rights. “Our ambition with The Weekly is to bring the authority and excellence of New York Times journalism to the largest possible television audience. Partnering with FX and Hulu together for distribution represents an entirely new and uniquely powerful way do just that,” said Meredith Kopit Levien, COO of The New York Times Company. 21st Century Fox is parent to FX and co-parent, with Comcast, Disney and Time Warner, to Hulu.
 
TruTV is keeping it funny with a 2018-19 programming slate that includes a series pickup for its Tacoma FD (wt) pilot, set in a firehouse in the wettest city in America. A new comedic medical advice show from Ken Jeong and an animated series from comedian Jo Koy received pilot commitments, and the net ordered new seasons of Adam Ruins Everything, Hack My Life, and Laff Mobb’s Laff Tracks. “We’ve reached a point in our illustrious four-year history as a comedy network where we have a fully-balanced portfolio, proven results and are firing on all cylinders,” said net president Chris Linn. “Our mix of returning hits, new series, plus scripted and unscripted formats in development, and a wholly-owned library of originals gives us a distinct advantage in the marketplace. Against all odds and in a challenging landscape, truTV continues to deliver premium experiences for our fans and our advertising partners, and combined with our all-in commitment to reduced commercials, we plan to keep raising the bar.” Linn talks more about the net’s Limited Commercial Interruption strategy in the new Cynsiders.

Showtime is developing Yellowjackets, following a girls’ high school soccer team transformed into warring clans after a plane crash in the wilderness in 1975. Project comes from Entertainment One, producer Drew Comins and writer-producers Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson.
 
Which sounds a world away from a scripted drama from soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, Liz Garcia and Josh Harto (Memphis Beat) and wiip, also centered on a high school girls’ soccer team, that nabbed a series commitment from Facebook Watch. This series has the team’s community rallying around the language of the game.
 
Netflix ordered a new comedy from Ricky Gervais. After Life focuses on a man who decides to punish the world after his wife’s sudden death by saying and doing whatever he likes. Gervais will star, write and direct all 6 episodes, as well as serve as an EP. The streamer also ordered its first original anime set in Mexico; Seis Manos comes from Viz Media LLC and Powerhouse Animation.
 
Lionsgate struck a deal with Overboard producer and star Eugenio Derbez and Benjamin Odell’s 3Pas Studios to extend their relationship to TV, calling for 3Pas to produce English- and Spanish-language series for Lionsgate’s television and streaming platforms.
 
 
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
 
Music City Fix, focused on house flippers in Nashville, premieres Thursday, June 7 at 11p on HGTV.
 
Season two of ID’s The Real Story with Maria Elena Salinas bows Monday, June 4 at 10p. The season debut follows a woman who followed her heart to Dallas only to wind up the subject of a homicide investigation.
 
Onboard as subjects for the first season of PBS’s Breaking Big, debuting Friday, June 15 at 8:30p, are Trevor Noah, Lee Daniels, Eddie Huang, Kirsten Gillibrand, Gretchen Carlson and Michael Strahan. Series centers on people who took an “unexpected journey” to success in their field.

Two-parter Drinks, Crime and Prohibition airs on Smithsonian Channel Monday, June 11 and Monday, June 18 at 8p. Weapons experts, historians, museum curators and mixologists weigh in on “the failed experiment” of a country gone dry.
 
Just in time for summer, Cooking Channel’s Beach Bites with Katie Lee launches Thursday, June 7 at 10p.
 
In Defense Of premieres on Oxygen Saturday, June 23 at 7p. True crime series explores the complex relationships between notorious defendants and the attorneys who represent them.
 
 
ADVERTISING
 
A+E Networks is including business outcome-based guarantees in some of its Upfront deals, focused on the number of website visits of store traffic. “What we felt was missing was the last frontier, to go a step further and guarantee the outcomes that the client cares about the most,” Peter Olsen, EVP ad sales, told Television News Daily. A+E is working with analytics companies including Data+Math, Millward Brown, Catalina, Axciom and iSpot.tv to determine how ads are performing.

Judy Greer (Arrested Development) will head the voice cast of new PBS Kids animated series Let’s Go Luna, launching Wednesday, November 21….Kate Walsh (Private Practice) landed a recurring role on Netflix’s upcoming The Umbrella Academy, based on the graphic novels….Francesca Reale (Haters Back Off) nabbed a recurring role on season three of Netflix’s Stranger Things.
 
 
DIGITAL DATA
 
Disney’s pending deal to acquire assets from 21st Century Fox does not impact the company’s plans for a direct-to-consumer streaming service, said CEO Bob Iger during an earnings call. While the $52.4 billion deal would enhance the service, Iger said it was in the works before the Fox deal emerged. “It has to become the destination for watching Disney, Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar product,” said Iger.
 
More viewers are turning to TV sets to stream TV content, according to a report from Conviva. “The Secret Life of Streamers Part II” found that connected TV sets accounted for 48% of 9p-10p episodic video plays last year, up from 35% in the 2016 survey. Viewing on personal computers slipped to 19%, from 39%. The average viewing session on connected TVs was 77 minutes, twice as long as viewers on computers and mobile.
 
During Dish Network’s earnings call, chairman Charlie Ergen said of Wall Street skepticism about the vMVPD business and Sling TV, “We’re going to take some arrows, so be it,” adding, “Sling has a tremendous technology. So we have a lot of value in that technology. We can do things that other people can’t.” That said, “We’re not going to go where there’s just no money.” Sling TV now counts over 2.3 million subscribers.

E!’s multi-platform coverage of the 2018 Met Gala delivered a record-breaking 47 million total engagements across TV, digital and social (+18% versus 2017).
 
CBS’s NCIS hit a season high 14.8 million viewers for Tuesday’s episode, featuring the final appearance of Pauley Perrette, with a 1.6 rating among A18-49 that was the highest since the season premiere.
 
Disney Channel’s DuckTales on Friday hit new series highs in Total Viewers (1.25 million), Kids 6-11 (366,000/1.5 rating), Girls 6-11 (214,000/1.8) and Boys 6-11 (152,000/1.2).
 
Bounce drama Saints & Sinners was the most-watched program in all of television on Sunday in the delivery of target audience of African Americans (P25-54) between 9p-10p.
