Leading lady Stana Katic and cast member Tamala Jones will not be joining ABC’s Castle for season nine. “Kate Beckett has been beloved character on our hit series Castle for the past eight years. We are grateful for Stana Katic’s talent and dedication to the series and we hope to continue our relationship,” said the net. “Tamala Jones has also been an integral part of the series and we are grateful for she was a part of Castle.” Said Katic, “Rather then distract from what was an amazing experience, I would just like to say that I’m very grateful to ABC for giving me the opportunity to be a part of a much beloved show. Thank you to the fans.”

The Bravermans are headed to Up TV. The network has acquired drama series Parenthood, which will premiere Monday, May 30 with five episodes starting at 8p, before settling into a Monday from 8p-11p slot. 

EXCLUSIVE: Lifetime, reflecting parent A+E Networks‘ new approach to Upfronts, took over the Brooks Atkinson Theater to introduce a brand vision centered onstrong women, before a performance of Waitress the Musical. (The play was written, directed, designed and scored by women.) Lifetime touted it slate of scripted originals, nonfiction series and movies to a packed house of advertising partners, and offered an overview of the findings of a study of almost 500 women. What do women look for in television content? Female characters who convey strength. "Lifetime will continue be the premier network that empowers women, and we are excited to take our valued partners on the journey with us,” said Amy Baker, EVP of Ad Sales.

GSN revealed the two political pundits who will participate in half-hour special event, Political Idiotest, airing Wednesday, April 20 at 11p. Tomi Lahren (Tomi on TheBlaze TV) will represent the conservative side of the political spectrum, while Cenk Uygur (The Young Turks), will bear left. The show is hosted by comedian and political commentator Ben Gleib.

Crackle, Sony’s ad-supported streaming network, launches on Xfinity On Demand on Wednesday, April 20. Its long form, original content will also be available for TV Everywhere viewing via the Xfinity TV app and website. Originals include Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, animated series SuperMansion, scripted drama The Art of More, Sports Jeopardy! and more.

Showtime is kicking off the third season of Penny Dreadful, premiering Sunday, May 1 at 10p, with a fan-driven art competition. Through Friday, May 13, fans can submit their artwork to The Penny Dreadful Fan Art Competition on. One winner will take home the Grandeur Prize, which includes $1,000 and the opportunity to transform their creation into an official poster, product, or an upcoming Penny Dreadful comic book.

E! is expanding hit series Total Divas with new spin-off Total Bellas. Six one-hour episodes have been ordered starring Nikki Bella and Brie Bella. The Bella Twins will continue to appear on Total Divas, which concludes its fifth season tonight at 9p.

Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson and Mel Gibson are joining forces for TV drama The Barbary Coast, from The Mark Gordon Company. The drama will be directed and co-written by Gibson and star Russell and Hudson; Gibson will also recur. Entertainment One will handle international distribution for the series centered on the Gold Rush.

COMING UP

getTV is launching a weekday schedule focusing on hard-to-find favorites. The lineup, which is divided into three blocks – comedies, westerns and action/drama – will include 14 series to start and begins airing Monday, May 2 at 7a. In a special kick-off event, the net will present the two-hour premiere of 1984 series Riptide, starring Perry King, Joe Penny and Thom Bray, as part of a Silver Screen Favorites block on Sunday, May 1 at 8p.

Smithsonian Channel honors Queen Elizabeth with a two-hour special on Sunday, May 15 at 8p. The Queen at 90, celebrating the royal’s milestone birthday, features exclusive interviews with key figures in her life, including Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, The Duke of York, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, The Countess of Wessex and Peter Phillips. President Barack Obama intros the special.

For the fourth consecutive year, The CW will broadcast the annual iHeartradio Summer Pool Party concert as a one-hour special. The event, airing Wednesday, June 1 at 8p, features performances by Flo Rida, DNCE with special guest Hailee Steinfeld, Tinashe, Lukas Graham, Kygo and Jason Derulo, with more special guests to be announced.

A documentary exploring the toll of inherited guilt, My Nazi Legacy, premieres on Independent Lens Monday, May 2 at 10p on PBS (check local listings). Film airs in conjunction with Holocaust Remembrance Day (May 5) and the 70th anniversary of the Nuremberg Trials.

SundanceTV and the Irish Consulate of New York have partnered to present the U.S. premiere of Rebellion, a mini-series based on the 1916 Easter Rising, on Sunday, April 24 at 8p. A ticketed-only screening of the episode will take place at Pier A Harbor House in Battery Park, NY, that same day at 2:45p and 4:30p. Rebellion continues its three-night run on SundanceTV on Monday, April 25 and Tuesday, April 26 at 9p.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Dick Clark Productions set Sunday, January 8 as the date for the 2017 Golden Globes ceremony, airing live coast-to-coast on NBC.

NEW SERIES

USA Network‘s Queen of the South bows Tuesday, June 21 at 10p. Based on the best-selling novel La Reina Del Sur and starring Alice Braga (I Am Legend), the original drama tells the story of a woman forced to seek refuge in America after her drug-dealing boyfriend is unexpectedly murdered in Mexico.

Beach Bites With Katie Lee debuts on Cooking Channel on Thursday, June 2 at 10p. “Whether it is recipes that have been handed down for generations, coastal canteens serving up satisfying bar bites or snacks with a twist using local ingredients, Katie Lee is the perfect tour guide for this flavorful voyage to some of the most beautiful beaches,” said Didi O’Hearn, SVP Programming, Food Network & Cooking Channel.

RETURNING SERIES

Patricia Heaton and Food Network have begun production on the second season of Patricia Heaton Parties. Ten-episode sophomore run is slated to premiere in June 2016.

Dr. Nancy Alvarez returns to Spanish-language television with talk show Quien Tiene la Razon?, premiering on Television Dominicana, the official television network for the Dominican community, on Monday, April 18 at 6p. The psychologist offers feuding families and couples relationship advice Monday-Friday.

CASTING

Naomi Watts will star in the upcoming Netflix series Gypsy as therapist who begins to develop dangerous and intimate relationships with the people in her patients’ lives.

Kevin Bacon is heading back to TV: The Following vet has been tapped to fill the title role in Amazon comedy pilot I Love Dick. Project focuses on a struggling married couple and their mutual obsession with an off-putting but charismatic professor, Dick (Bacon).

Walton Goggins (Justified) has replaced Joe Manganiello as the star of Six, History’s contemporary military action drama from A+E Studios and The Weinstein Company. Manganiello pulled out last week due to a health issue, shutting down production until the role was recast.

John C. McGinley (Scrubs) is set to lead IFC comedy/horror series Stan Against Evil. Show follows Stanley Miller (McGinley), a sour, aging New England police sheriff who loses his position as head honcho due to an angry outburst at his wife’s funeral.

Reiko Aylesworth has nabbed a guest spot on NCIS. The 24 alum will play a deployed Marine Master Sergeant’s wife whose 14-year-old son foils a home invasion, on the CBS‘ series Tuesday, May 3 episode.

DIGITAL DOINGS

Disney ABC Television Group announced an initiative dubbed Clearinghouse that will offer pre-negotiated agreements to its affiliates to help them cut distribution deals with streaming services. ABC will roll out the initiative in the coming months. The technical and distribution components of deals between the ABC Owned Television Stations and DirecTV for the Watch ABC TV Everywhere service and Sony Playstation Vue will be used as templates for the Clearinghouse offerings. Hearst Television will pilot the DirecTV Clearinghouse affiliate opt-in across their 14 local ABC stations with the roll out of Watch ABC TV Everywhere early this summer.

According to a report in the new edition of the Digital TV World Household Forecasts, the number of digital TV homes will increase by 1.08 billion between 2010 and 2021 to 1.67 billion – a 185 per cent jump. Covering 138 countries, the digital TV total will climb by 120 million in 2016 alone, and by half a billion between 2015 and 2021. Meanwhile, global digital TV will reach 98.3 per cent of television households by 2021, up from 40.4 per cent at end-2010 and 74.6 per cent at end-2015.

CBS Daytime is launching Not Safe for Daytime, a series of digital videos on its YouTube channel that promote popular programs. The webisodes will include original skits, pop culture parodies and viral video spoofs and feature stars from Let’s Make A Deal, The Price Is Right, The Young and The Restless, The Bold and The Beautiful and The Talk. “CBS Daytime has one of the most passionate and loyal audiences in television, reaching 28 million viewers each week,” said Angelica McDaniel, EVP, Daytime Programs and Syndicated Program Development, CBS Entertainment and CBS Television Distribution. “We wanted to thank them by creating even more content, going behind the scenes of our series and showing a side of our talent that is, well, not safe for daytime TV! DIY series Nashville Flipped on Wednesday, April 13 at 10p, 10:30p and 11p posted a 50 percent ratings gain among audiences P25-54 in that time slot versus year-ago levels. New episodes of the series air Wednesday nights at 10p and 10:30p through May 4.

ABC’s The Family (3.0 million) held even with its prior week in A18-49 (0.8/2) to match its highest rating on the night. In addition, the drama was up 17 percent with Women 18-34 to a 6-week high.
