SD-WAN: Software-Defined Wide Area Networks are the newest iteration of WAN’s, which companies have relied on for years to link remote locations to headquarters. SD-WAN enables the leveraging of different network technologies, making it easier to connect to various marketing clouds and data management platforms.
 
 

TOP NEWS
 

Snapchat parent Snap Inc. has already inked a number of original content deals, with partners ranging from publishers like Vice to TV companies like NBCU and A+E Networks. The latest on the list is MGM Television, which just announced a deal to produce short-form originals for Snapchat’s Discover platform. It’s Snap’s first deal with a major studio. There are no details just yet as to what kind of content MGM plans to produce, or when it will premiere.
 
A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has reversed a lower court decision that FilmOn X was eligible for the same compulsory license to TV programming as cable operators have. The court said that a service that captures copyrighted works broadcast over the air, and then retransmits them to paying subscribers over the Internet without the consent of the copyright holders, is not a “cable system” eligible for a compulsory license under the Copyright Act.

Yesterday, for the first time ever, Snapchat ran a live 360-degree video stream within an ad unit. The stream ran in partnership with Turner’s truTV. Snapchat users were served an ad unit featuring Prentice Penny, the creator and star of the new unscripted comedy Upscale with Prentice Penny, which premiered yesterday. Anyone who clicked was taken to a live-stream from the premiere’s red carpet event. And truTV also ran Snap Ads throughout the evening, giving users the option to swipe up in order to watch a trailer for the series.
 
Google has announced some new brand safety policies meant to insure that ads don’t inadvertently appear alongside offensive or extremist YouTube content. The move comes shortly after some high-profile advertiser withdrawals, including the U.K. government. (Once an entire country abandons you, you know it’s time for some changes.) The company said that it would alter the default settings for ads so that they only appear alongside “legitimate creators” in its Partner Program. There will also be new account-level controls, making it easier for advertisers to exclude specific channels and sites from their Google Display Network and AdWords for Video buys.
 
Having purchased Cablevision Systems last year and programmatic platform Audience Partners earlier this month, Netherlands-based telco Altice has scooped up French outstream video ad tech firm Teads. Teads works with more than 500 premium publishers globally and 8,000 vertically specialized publishers.
 
Video technology providers Rapt Media and Kaltura announced an integration to bring enterprise companies and educational institutions better learning and engagement through interactive, personalized video experiences. The solution will be available to all Kaltura customers beginning this month.
 
 

MEASUREMENT

 
Social media management platform Hootsuite is adding to its ad tech and analytics capabilities. The company announced that it’s acquired the Snapchat analytics tool owned by the marketing firm Narrativ. Hootsuite exec Richard Hungerford told MarketingLand that the acquisition is meant to appeal to larger corporate clients, which “require more sophisticated analytics” when it comes to organic and paid marketing. Hootsuite – which previously had no Snapchat analytics capabilities – will now be able to track individual campaigns or videos launched on the app. 
 
 

PLATFORMS + DEVICES
 

Look out, Snapchat: Facebook isn’t the only tech giant that’s cribbing from you anymore. In its biggest-ever foray into the world of social messaging, Apple has announced Clips, a new messaging app that lets users take videos, and add animated titles, captions, and emojis. As with Snapchat’s Stories feature, the app lets users stitch multiple video clips together, complete with filters and speech bubbles. One big difference between Snapchat and Clips: With the latter, users can post videos to a wide array of platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Vimeo, and YouTube. There’s no set launch date for Clips just yet, but it’s likely to make its official debut in April, rolling out as a free download for iOS.
 
Periscope isn’t just for amateurs anymore. The Twitter-owned live-streaming platform has unveiled the Periscope Producer API, a product making it easier for publishers to stream professional quality live videos from external sources such as cameras, drones, and TV studios. The API is currently restricted to private beta users.

and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, partners in science fiction broadcast network COMET TV, said the network will be available on Apple TV and Roku. COMET TV’s app will include live playback of the network’s broadcast feed with an integrated program schedule along with information on current programming.
 
 

RESEARCH

To determine the TV ads generating the most digital response, attention analytics company iSpot.tv measures digital actions across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and all major search engines. Here, a look at the brands that advertised during the season one finale of NBC’s hit drama This Is Us.

A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).
