Bad news: Fox canceled low-rated but critically acclaimed comedy Raising Hope after four seasons. Good news: the one-hour series finale includes guest appearances by Downton Abbey‘s Lesley Nicol (Mrs. Patmore) and Kenny Loggins on Friday, April 4 at 9p. "We planned our season four finale with this possibility in mind," said exec producer Mike Mariano. "We’ll see you in syndication."

IN THE NEWS

Some fans had to delay watching the season finale of HBO‘s True Detective on Sunday night when streaming service HBO Go crashed. "Due to overwhelming popular demand for #TrueDetective, we’ve been made aware of an issue affecting some users," HBO GO tweeted. "Please try again soon." It appears some viewers might have moved to an actual television to catch the show – total viewers hit a series high 3.5 million, up from 2.3 for the show’s premiere.

Good Morning America debuted its new digital studio, #socialsquare, on Monday morning. The ABC morning show’s "social nerve center" allows GMA guests to interact with viewers during the broadcast. "This will revolutionize how our show is produced in the morning… it’s all about engaging directly with our viewers from beginning to end," said GMA senior executive producer Tom Cibrowski. NBC rival Today, which opened its own digital studio in September, noted, "If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, we are deeply and sincerely flattered."

Nielsen SocialGuide released a list of the top ten sports events since the launch of Nielsen Twitter TV Ratings in September 2013 (surprise! Super Bowl XLVII was tops), reporting that posts about sports represented a full 50 percent of tweets sent about TV during the year.

CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson announced her resignation on Monday via Twitter. Attkisson joined the net in 1993.

TNT released premiere dates for three shows: Michael Bay‘s The Last Ship launches Sunday, June 22 at 9p, followed by the season four bow of Falling Skies at 10p. Legends makes its debut Wednesday, August 20 at 9p.

ABC Family announced summer premieres for three new original series. Drama Chasing Life debuts Tuesday, June 10 at 9p, with comedies Young & Hungry and Mystery Girls launching Wednesday, June 25 at 8p and 8:30p.

IFC‘s Maron bows Thursday, May 8 at 10p. Guests set for the comedy’s sophomore season include Judd Hirsch (Taxi), late night host Conan O’Brien and comedian Sarah Silverman.

Actor/producer/reality TV star Mark Wahlberg will receive the MTV Generation Award at the 2014 MTV Awards. Fellow Entourage alums Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Jerry Ferrara and Kevin Dillon will present; awards show airs live from LA on Sunday, April 13 at 9p.

Among the slew of supernatural-connected celebs to take part in upcoming BBC America‘s The Real History of Science Fiction are William Shatner (Star Trek), Richard Dreyfuss (Close Encounters of the Third Kind) and David Tennant (Dr. Who). Docu-series launches Saturday, April 19 at 10p.

Hispanic net Estrella TV will air the U.S. premiere of Isabel, about the life of Queen Isabel de Castilla, starting Sunday, March 16 at 7p.

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

Fast-casual food chain Chili’s is increasing its media spend on national TV, reports Food Business News, part of a rebranding effort that includes tabletop tablets, location makeovers and culinary changes. "We are a national TV player," said Guy Constant, CFO of parent company Brinker International, at an industry conference this month. "There is only a handful of us in casual dining that have that, so we certainly want to leverage that competitive advantage."

 

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

Comcast announced an agreement with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment that will allow Xfinity TV customers to purchase Sony movies and TV shows, often weeks before they are available on DVD, and store them in the cloud to watch anywhere. American Hustle will be available starting today, March 11, with Captain Phillips, Breaking Bad and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs to follow. Comcast subscribers will also be able to purchase Netflix drama House of Cards, for $1.99 a pop.

AXS TV will air the premiere of the 2013 MusiCares Gala, hosted last year by The Daily Show‘s Jon Stewart and honoring Bruce Springsteen. Performers covering the Boss’s songs include Elton John, John Legend and Neil Young. Tribute airs Sunday, March 30 at 8p.

CASTING

Josh Duhamel (Las Vegas) will star as an FBI agent in the Vince Gilligan/David Shore drama Battle Creek. Already cast: Dean Winters (Law & Order: SVU), Janet McTeer (The White Queen) and Kal Penn (House).

James Roday (Psych) nabbed the male lead in CBS relationship comedy pilot Good Session.

INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS

Sci-fi drama Orphan Black was a big winner at the Canadian Screen Awards last week. Among the trophies for the Temple Street Production series were Best Dramatic Series, Best Actress (Tatiana Maslany), Best Supporting Actor (Jordan Gavaris), Best Supporting Actress (Maria Kennedy Doyle), Best Guest Role (Natalie Lisinska), Best Writing (Graeme Manson) and Best Direction (John Fawcett). Show returns to BBC America Saturday, April 19 at 9p. Also on the winner’s list: Call Me Fitz, which landed a comedic actor trophy for Jason Priestley (Beverly Hills, 90210) and comedic actress for Tracy Dawson.

Fargo‘s traveling across the pond. Channel 4 acquired U.K. broadcast rights to the 10-part series starring Billy Bob Thornton; show premieres on FX Tuesday, April 15.

Electus acquired international rights to Online Dating Rituals of the American Male. The Magical Elves reality show premiered on Bravo Sunday, March 9 at 10p.

MIPTV MENTIONS

Comedy Central has added red-hot Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) to its MIPTV panel, "The Power of Comedy: Laughing its Way From Online to Linear." The session, dedicated to "web to TV" series Broad City, takes place Monday, April 7.

Hat Trick International will launch Win It Cook It at MIPTV next month. The food show format from Plum Pictures calls for contestants to compete for their ingredients before they can whip up a winner.

Breakthrough Entertainment is bringing new drama Hard Rock Medical to MIPTV. The series, based on true events, is a co-production between Title Entertainment, Carte Blanche Films, Distinct Features and Moody Street Productions.

RATINGS

ABC‘s premiere of freshman drama Resurrection on Sunday averaged a robust 3.6 rating among A18-49 and 13.6 million viewers, according to early Nielsens, the best numbers of the night. The debut helped Revenge, bumped from 9p to 10p, to a six-tenths points lift (1.9 in the demo).

Sunday’s premiere of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey scored a 2.1 rating among A18-49 and 5.8 million viewers for Fox, according to Nielsen. But that’s just one piece of a big pie. With the show debuting simultaneously on Nat Geo, FX, FXX, FXM, Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2, Nat Geo WILD, Nat Geo Mundo, and available in 181 countries, Fox predicts a global audience in the neighborhood of 40 million.

Sunday’s premiere of OWN docu-series Lindsay delivered 693,184 total viewers and demo ratings of .6 among W25-54 and .5 among W18-49 rating. That was triple-digit gains versus the prior six-week time period average (up 178 percent in total viewers, 300 percent for W25-54 and 478 percent for W18-49), but down from Lohan’s post-rehab interview on Oprah’s Next Chapter, which drew 892,000 viewers.

Friday’s series premiere of Cesar 911: Family Feud delivered 317,000 total viewers P2+ and 180,000 P25-54, the second-highest rated Friday telecast in Nat Geo WILD history.
