FOX renewed the culinary competition series Masterchef helmed by Gordon Ramsay for a second season. Masterchef is produced by Reveille, Shine TV and One Potato Two Potato and is based on a format created by Franc Roddam and Shine TV. International distribution for the show’s format is handled by Shine International. Masterchef’s first season two-hour finale will air on FOX September 15 at 8p.

CNN yesterday revealed the name of its upcoming 8p hour-long show starring former New York governor Eliot Spitzer and conservative columnist Kathleen Parker. The weeknight show is called Parker Spitzer and it premieres October 4.

A&E Network premieres a second season of the real-life series Steven Seagal Lawman on October 6 at 10p with back-to-back episodes. In the new eight-episode, half-hour series, Seagal continues as a Sheriff’s Deputy on duty in Jefferson Parrish, LA with viewers watching Seagal and his officers responding to crimes-in-progress. The second season will also delve more into Seagal’s personal life that he shares with his wife and new son, his philanthropic efforts and his expertise in weaponry and martial arts. The series is produced for A&E by ITV Studios and Steamroller Productions.

Beginning September 13, Hallmark Channel introduces Hallmark Channel Home, the daytime franchise block featuring lifestyle programming from 10a to 6p starting with the sixth season of The Martha Stewart Show airing exclusively on Hallmark Channel. The daytime lineup also includes the new shows Mad Hungry with Lucinda Scala Quinn and Whatever with Alexis and Jennifer.

Amy Poehler was selected to host the 36th season premiere of NBC’s Saturday Night Live on September 25 with Katy Perry slated as the musical guest. Later in the new season, it has been announced Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston and Glee’s Jane Lynch will also host. Four new comics are joining this season as featured players including Vanessa Bayer, Paul Brittain, Taran Killam and Jay Pharoah.

Oprah Winfrey is among the 2010 honorees and recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors, given for lifetime contributions to American culture. Besides Winfrey, other honorees include Paul McCartney, Merle Haggard, composer/lyricist Jerry Herman and choreographer Bill T. Jones. The five will be celebrated at a gala at the Kennedy Center on December 5.

SNL Kagan released a new report stating advertising revenue forecasts among various media categories:

  • Ad revenue at Broadcast TV stations is expected to increase by +15% this year to $18.8 billion. In the previous year, broadcast TV stations experienced a decline of -22.4%.
  • Cable television is likely to see a bump of +8.9% to $27.7 billion in 2010.
  • It is predicted Broadcast networks will see an ad revenue rise of +5.1% to $19.1 billion this year whereas in 2009, ad revenue dipped by -7.7%.
  • TV syndication and barter may see a -2.1% decline to $2.8 billion.
  • Overall, Kagan says US advertising revenue may grow by +2.8% in 2010, despite continued declines in some sectors such as newspapers, business publications and yellow pages.

Later this month, Nat Geo WILD brings back a sophomore season of Expedition Wild on September 27 at 9p. In the new season, wildlife expert Casey Anderson and his buddy, a 900-pound brown bear named Brutus travel inside Yellowstone National Park, America’s oldest national park. The series is produced by Grizzly Creek Films for Nat Geo WILD.

Sunday night’s sophomore season premiere of Jerseylicious on The Style Network at 8p attracted almost 390,000 total viewers equal to a +22% bump over the first season opener. Jerseylicious also posted a 0.50 rating among W18-49 and a 0.55 rating with W18-34. Following at 9p, the series debut of Mel B: It’s a Scary World tallied 300,000 total viewers and delivered a 0.61 rating with W18-34.

TNT’s summer season ender of Leverage on Sunday at 9p delivered 3.7 million total viewers; 1.3 million among A18-49; and 1.5 million A25-54 viewers.

David Dortort, 93, creator of the classic western TV series, Bonanza, died September 5. Bonanza ran on NBC for 14 years from 1959-1973 and was the most-watched show on television during the years 1964-1967. Mr. Dortort also created the show The High Chaparral that also aired on NBC for three seasons. Mr. Dortort also wrote episodes for such series as Lassie, The Restless Gun, Climax! and Waterfront. Over his career, Mr. Dortort received three Emmy nominations. He also served as president of the Producers Guild of America and was president of the Television-Radio branch of the WGA. Mr. Dortort is survived by a daughter, a son, one brother and a granddaughter. A service will be held at noon on Sunday at Mount Sinai Memorial Parks and Mortuaries in Los Angeles. Instead of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Writers Guild Foundation and the Venice Family Clinic.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

AMC picked up the exclusive US cable rights from Paramount Pictures to the trio of Godfather films including The Godfather (1972), The Godfather: Part II  (1974) and The Godfather: Part III (1990). The deal allows AMC the licensing rights to air the films over the next nine years beginning January 2011 through December 2019. This deal marks the longest licensing term ever for the film franchise.

Global distributor, Fremantle Corporation licensed the series Healthy Gourmet to WealthTV in the US beginning this fall. The half-hour series with 26 episodes is produced by Kaleidoscope Productions, and follows nutritionist Julie Daniluk and chef Ezra Title as they work with various groups showing them how to eat healthy, great-tasting food.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Syfy and NBC’s Peacock Productions are developing a new weekly reality series, UFO: Unbelievably Freakin’ Obvious featuring music star Billy Ray Cyrus and his 21-year old son, Trace Cyrus. The father/son duo will investigate conspiracy theories surrounding unexplained events and paranormal phenomena. In each episode, the pair will travel cross-country seeking the truth behind long-held mysteries. Also helping out is Trace’s best friend, “Silent Franky” who will supply important information from his computer workstation set up in his parent’s basement.

MTV ordered an untitled put pilot project from up-and-coming comedian Bo Burnham who just finished a 30-day run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and also has a Comedy Central stand-up special airing October 16, cites Variety. The half-hour scripted pilot centers on a kid just out of high school who is trying to be a celebrity without having any talent. Burnham will write and be an executive producer along with Dan Lagana and Luke Liacos. Dave Becky of 3 Arts will also executive produce.

CBS is considering a drama based on aspects of the spy-themed novels by Robert Ludlum, reports Variety. The project is in early development phases for CBS and CBS TV Studios. CBS has ordered a script to be written by John Glenn who will also executive produce along with Anthony Zuiker.

Myriad Entertainment has changed its name to Iliad Entertainment. The New York-based company led by international co-production experts, Veronique Bernard and Lisa Zeff specializes in putting together international co-productions for US producers and bringing international producers and their content into the US market.

Casting Call: Meredith Video Studios is seeking fun, savvy and enthusiastic first-time moms and moms-to-be to document and share their motherhood experiences with other first-time parents. Selected participants will receive a handheld camcorder to record and upload video to the My First Baby website. The video submissions will become part of a special webisode series featured online and on the nationally syndicated lifestyle television show Better. Some participants may also receive baby products courtesy of Graco. Eligible participants must be either a new first-time mom who has given birth or adopted a newborn within the past six months, or a woman expecting her first baby. Friday A18-49 Analysis: UNIV ushered in the long holiday weekend with a win Friday night at 1.7/6 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen. UNIV led at 8p with Hasta que el Dinero Nos Separe at 1.6/7 with ABC’s Wife Swap rerun next at 1.1/5. UNIV remained on top during 9p with Soy Tu Duena at 2.1/7 and ABC was once again in second with a Primetime: What Would You Do? repeat at 1.3/5. Then at 10p, NBC’s Dateline: Cracked and UNIV’s La Rosa de Guadalupe tied for #1 at 1.4/5 apiece and ABC’s 20/20 trailed with 1.1/4.
