CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

09/08/04

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 8, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Aside from NBC and Fox, all other network broadcasters aired reruns on Monday night. CBSMonday night schedule still holds up, just one tenth of a point behind NBC’s original lineup (3.3/9 vs. 3.2/9) among A18-49 according to Nielsen Media Research. NBC’s Fear Factor at 8p delivered a 4.2/12, well ahead of #2 CBS’ Still Standing/Yes Dear (2.3/7). North Shore on Fox was also an original episode, posting a modest 1.8/5, though did slightly better among women.  At 9pm NBC’s special airing of its new crime drama Hawaii earned a 3.9/10, again ahead of CBS’ Raymond/2-1/2 Men (3.9/10 vs. 3.3/8). On Fox, the second outing of reality series Renovate My Family with Jay McGraw host (son of Dr. Phil) tried to pull some heartstrings, but came up short compared with its premiere last week (2.7/7 vs. 4.0/12), though increased its lead-in. At 10p CBS’ CSI Miami [r] earned a knock down 4.0/11, well ahead of a special airing of 20/20 on ABC (2.5/7) and a repeat of Last Comic Standing on NBC (1.8/5).

The Next Great Champ did premiere last night on Fox at 9pm as planned, despite best legal efforts from the producers of the  NBC series The Contender.  With that, however, comes another fighter in the ring – this time it’s the Los Angeles Times.  Both of the boxing shows have received a waiver from the California State Athletic Commission to keep under wraps the winners of their respective shows.  The LA Times is not content with that waiver, and has filed a Petition under the California Public Records Act to release the names/winners of the show bouts, so says Hollywood Reporter.  A hearing is scheduled for September 27.

Tonight’s Premieres:
FOX:  That 70’s Show [p], Quintuplets [p], Bernie Mac [p], Method & Red [p]

Yesterday marked ESPN’s 25th anniversary, and on that anniversary it announced the launching of two new ESPN spinoff networks:  ESPNU and and ESPN2 HD.  ESPNU will carry only college sports including football and basketball, with plans to kick off in March 2005 and compete directly with CSTV: College Sports TV as well as other regional sports networks. Plans for ESPNU call for carriage of upwards of 300 live college sporting events as well as replays of major matchups from ABC/Disney’s other outlets including ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC. ESPN2 HD is exactly as it sounds – a high def airing of various events and programs already airing on ESPN2.

Digital cable music network Fuse will launch a new series on October 4 called After Party, and as the name infers, the strip programming block will air late night, beginning at midnight, go on until the week hours of the night – 3am. According to Variety, the first show in the block, d’Fused, which focuses on trends in the music industry, will produce its first three eps in conjunction with the magazine Maxim. At 1230am, hosted series After Party Video Hour kicks in. Authentic Hip Hop begins at 130am and 4Play at 230am.

Robert Verdi became known to many viewers when Discovery Channel launched Surprise by Design.  Since then, the flamboyant designer has also been seen on numerous shows as both a room designer and a style expert.  His next foray will be head of style on the red carpet at E!’s Emmy Awards preshow, filling the void left by Joan and Melissa Rivers.  He will also soon begin hosting Fashion Police, a weekly series for E! that kicks off on September 20.

Intermedia Advertising Group’s Top Ten Most Effective New Ads for new campaigns airing the weeks of Aug 16-29, 2004. The list is ranked by viewer’s ability to recall the new ads and their associated products and brands. The Recall Score is the percentage of TV viewers who within 24 hours are able to remember the brand of the ad they saw during normal TV viewing. The scores are then indexed against the mean score for all ads during the time period to create the Recall Index; 100 is Average. For example, with a Recall Index of 244, the top-ranked Campbell’s spot was recalled more than two and a half times the average new ad during the period. The History Channel
presents This Day in History:
1966:  The first episode of “Star Trek” is aired on NBC.  Despite the enduring popularity of the show and its many spin-offs, it was not popular in its own time, placing only as high as 52nd among all TV series in its best season.  Originally given a five-year mission, the Enterprise’s intrepid crew fought Klingons, outwitted Romulans, and Captain Kirk’s torn tunics.  But the crew was helplessly overmatched by NBC executives, who decided to boldly cancel the show and the mission after just three seasons.
