Eddie Murphy was chosen as the next host of the 84th Academy Awards when the event is televised live on ABC February 26, 2012.  This is Murphy’s first turn as host of the Oscars.  In 2006, he was nominated for an Oscar for his supporting role in Dreamgirls. 

Long-time talk show host Regis Philbin’s last day as co-host of Live! With Regis and Kelly will be November 18.  Philbin revealed his departure date on the program yesterday morning.  Since Philbin announced his imminent exit last January, all year Live! has recounted memorable moments of Philbin’s 28 years on the show. 

ABC is giving over all of primetime to Bachelor Pad next Monday for a three-hour finale episode starting at 8p.  This second season of Bachelor Pad has averaged 6.8 million total viewers each week.  Also during the final episode, ABC will introduce Ben Flajnik as the next new star of its reality series The Bachelor which premieres in January 2012.  Flajnik appeared in the most recent season of The Bachelorette though his marriage proposal to Ashley Herbert was rejected in the finale episode.  Chris Harrison hosts all three reality series which are produced by Next Entertainment in association with Warner Horizon Television.

Crime-fighting show America’s Most Wanted is being reinstated on Lifetime for its 25th season later this year.  John Walsh continues as the show’s host and executive producer when the show returns on Lifetime with new episodes.  Last May, FOX announced it was canceling the long-running show from its fixture spot on Saturday nights though would air four two-hour quarterly specials starting this fall produced by Twentieth Century Fox. 

This fall, CMT introduces four new series and two returning series:

  • Top Secret Recipe is a new one-hour series with eight episodes hosted by food hacker Todd Wilbur who investigates an iconic American recipe and tries to recreate it better than the original.  Produced by 51 Minds Entertainment.  Premieres October 7 at 9p.
  • Trick My What? from the producers of Trick My Truck is a new one-hour, nine-episode series hosted by John Schneider that gives blue-collar workers the chance to trick out anything with an engine from shrimp boats to logging skidders.  Produced by Varuna Entertainment.  Premieres October 7 at 10p.
  • Bayou Billionaires premieres this winter and highlights the Dowden family of Shreveport, LA who discovered their home was sitting on the fourth largest deposit of natural gas in the US.  After striking it rich, the Dowdens are ready to experience the finer things and experiences lots of money can buy.  The 10-episode half-hour series is from Magilla Entertainment.
  • Summer Rental also premieres this winter about a Southern family that takes on a “fish out of water” experience by visiting a fancy beach rental in the Hamptons for the summer.  The 10-episode one-hour series is from Pink Sneakers.
  • Sweet Home Alabama 2 debuts a second season October 20 at 9p.  Glassman Media produces.
  • Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team 6 opens a new season October 20 at 10p.  Triage Entertainment produces.

CMT additionally brings back another installment of CMT Crossroads: Sting and Vince Gill this November and Invitation Only: Trace Adkins premieres September 25 at 11p and other new episodes featuring Martina McBride and Blake Shelton debut this fall.

Later this month, TV One debuts new series Will To Live showcasing real stories of people who have faced life-threatening and life-changing situations told in first person.  Each episode features interviews with the survivors as well as dramatic recreations.  The series, with seven half-hour episodes and three one-hour eps, opens September 18 at 8p with two episodes airing back-to-back. Will To Live airs on Sunday nights throughout this fall at 8p with encores at 11p. 

Monday’s sixth season finale of Keeping Up with the Kardashians on E! at 10p averaged more than 3.3 million total viewers as well as posting a 3.93 rating with W18-34 and 1.1 million viewers in the demo.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Me-TV racks up more major markets to its affiliate roster taking its clearance level to 60% of the US.  Me-TV’s new affiliates include Hubbard Broadcasting’s KSTP/ABC in Minneapolis/St. Paul; Journal Communications’ WSYM/FOX in Lansing and WGBA/NBC in Green Bay; Midwest Broadcasting’s KFMB/CBS in San Diego; Landmark Television’s KLAS/CBS in Las Vegas; Roberts Broadcasting’s WRBU/MyNetwork in St. Louis; and Southwest Media’s KCSG/Me-TV in Salt Lake City.  Me-TV, memorable entertainment television is owned and operated by Weigel Broadcasting Co. and is distributed by MGM Television. 

SevenOne International, based outside Munich acquired the distribution rights to the docu-reality series Louie Spence Dance Project with six one-hour episodes.  The series, produced by Kinetic Content will premiere on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network in early 2012 and follows world-famous choreographer and dance instructor Louie Spence as he transforms the Broadway Dance Studio in New York. 

US multi-platform independent network Ovation, dedicated to arts culture, made several recent licensing deals:

  • One with BBC for seven documentaries and performances films including the US premiere rights to Princess Diana: Her Life in Jewels and the docu-drama Van Gogh: Painted with Words. Other BBC titles include the miniseries Aristocrats, Diana’s Dresses, How to Be a Prince, Royal London and Van Dyck: Undressed. 
  • From Digital Rights Group, Ovation picked up the rights to The Queen’s Sister and Wallis and Edward.
  • Ovation picked up a two-week event titled American Revolutionaries from Eagle Rock Entertainment focused on American artists who have made a cultural impact with 19 titles in total.
  • From Electric Sky, the US premiere rights for the latest performance of The Nutcracker by the Royal Opera House. 
  • ITV Global Entertainment made a deal with Ovation for Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker and the US premiere rights to William and Kate: A Modern Royal Romance and US basic cable rights to Bertie and Elizabeth.

As of yesterday, Sundance Channel Global launched a new hi-def VOD service on Poland’s UPC Polska.

Premium gay television network, here! TV is partnering with Bright House Networks to launch in Central Florida covering the Tampa, Orlando and surrounding markets.  As of today, Bright House Networks customers can receive here! TV’s linear and SVOD services for an $8 monthly fee with programming including original series, films, documentaries and specials as well as a library containing LGBT film titles. 

Sewee Entertainment’s Andrew Young Presents was renewed for a fifth season next year in more than 80% of the US.  Stations renewing the series include Fox O&Os: WNYW-WWOR/New York, WFLD-WPWR/Chicago, WTXF/Philadelphia and other affiliates including WSB/Atlanta, KSTP/Minneapolis, WEWS/Cleveland, WFTV/Orlando, WSOC/Charlotte and WTVF/Nashville among others.  Andrew Young Presents also airs globally in more than 175 countries through the American Forces TV Network. 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Music group Wilson Phillips will be highlighted in a new reality series for TV Guide Network.  The Wilson Phillips show project will offer an intimate look at sisters Carnie Wilson and Wendy Wilson and their best friend Chynna Phillips as they make a music comeback following their surprise cameo appearance in the movie Bridesmaids.  Additionally, Chynna is one of the recently-announced celebrities in the next season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars while Carnie is presently a judge on ABC’s singing competition series Karaoke Battle USA.  A pilot episode featuring the threesome will debut later this year on TV Guide Network.  RelativityREAL is behind the project with Jay Blumenfield and Tony Marsh serving as executive producers. 

REELZCHANNEL announced development on its first original reality television series titled The Z Team.  Produced by ZOO Productions, The Z Team stars Lorenzo Lamas, Rudy Reyes, Tommy “Tiny” Lister and Torrie Wilson as a team hired by law enforcement agencies and concerned citizens across the country to confront real life and death situations on the streets of  American cities.  The team members, led by Lamas, have experience fighting bad guys in movies and now they have the chance to fight real life drug dealers, the mob and more.

Patrick Sean Smith, creator/executive producer on ABC Family’s Greek is developing a teen pilot for FOX, per TVLine.  The one-hour drama and adventure series with a working title of Wanderlust is about a group of teen international travelers. Imagine TV is producing the series for 20th Century Fox. 

Jay Mohr (Gary Unmarried) landed a major recurring role on ABC’s upcoming sitcom Suburgatory.  Mohr will play Steve Royce, the often absent husband of kept housewife, Dallas (Cheryl Hines).

HISTORY’s upcoming miniseries The Hatfields and McCoys added Lindsay Pulsipher (HBO’s True Blood) to the cast list, playing Roseanna McCoy, the beautiful daughter of Randall (Bill Paxton) and Sally McCoy (Mare Winningham).  Roseanna enters into a forbidden romance with Johnse Hatfield that divides the feuding families even further.  Kevin Costner also stars as “Devil” Anse Hatfield; Tom Berenger and Powers Boothe also will play members of the two families. The miniseries begins production this month in Romania.

When ABC’s soap One Life to Live ends its long run in January, several of its stars have agreed to continue their roles online under Prospect Park, the media and production company that acquired the soap along with fellow ABC soap All My Children in an exclusive multi-year production deal to continue both programs beyond their ABC finale dates.  OLTL actors continuing their roles online include Erika Slezak (Victoria Lord), Ted King (Tomas Delgado), Michael Easton (John McBain) and Kassie DePaiva (Blair Cramer).  Prospect Park is involved with closing a deal for the actors with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists which will allow Prospect Park to sell a second window of OLTL to a cable network.  So far, none of the actors on All My Children, including Susan Lucci have signed on with Prospect Park.  All My Children’s finale airs September 23 on ABC.

Previous William Morris Endeavor (WME) board member John Fogelman is opening a hybrid entertainment, media business development and consulting company called FactoryMade Ventures.  J.J. Abrams, currently a client of Fogelman’s is joining the company as its principal investor.  FactoryMade Ventures will team with top creative talent and companies to develop and deliver content across multi-platforms globally.  Early projects include various formats of original short-form programming, creating interactive viewing and gaming experiences, incubating projects for digital and mobile platforms in addition to launching cable and network television domestically and in emerging markets such as Brazil, Peru and Colombia.  To date at launch, the new company counts global companies Telefonica, Hasbro, RTL Group and Intel as clients.

~ RATINGS ~

Friday A18-49 Analysis:  Univision opened the long holiday weekend as a winner Friday with a 1.9/6 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.   At 8p, Univision’s Teresa attracted more viewers by delivering a 1.6/6 while CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery and FOX’s Kitchen Nightmares repeat tied for second place at 1.0/4 apiece.  Univision continued with its winning streak through 9p with Pequenos Gigantes at 2.0/7 with NBC’s Dateline next at 1.1/4.  Univision polished off the final win of the night with the second half of Pequenos Gigantes at 1.8/6 and NBC’s Dateline stayed put at #2 with a 1.3/4.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Chris Florio has joined Cynopsis Media as Sales Manager, reporting to Mike Farina and based in the Summit, NJ office.  Chris came to Cynopsis from Framepool in NYC where he was the Sales Manager.  Also working on behalf of Cynopsis Media as a business development consultant is Denise O’Connor , formerly VP/Sales for NATPE.  Denise is based on the West Coast.

Crown Media Family Networks (CMFN), a unit of Crown Media Holdings Inc. and home of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel, tapped Alexandra Smith and Ayn Prince as Directors/Programming for Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel respectively.  Alexandra specifically will manage the daily scheduling of original movies and series in addition to overseeing the scheduling database (SIMS) among other duties for her network. At Hallmark Movie Channel, Ayn will manage the monthly program schedules and highlights for the network and will work closely with Alexandra to maximize program inventory among other duties. Both Alexandra and Ayn are based in Studio City, CA and report to Darren Melameth, VP/Programming, Planning and Scheduling. 

Armand Leo joins Entertainment One (eOne) as VP/Production Affairs where he will manage the company’s roster of scripted and non-scripted television projects including miniseries and TV movies from development through delivery.  Armand reports to Margaret O’Brien, COO, Entertainment One Television.  Furthermore, eOne named Joss Duffield as Head/International Sales, Entertainment One Family.  Joss will be the lead for the international distribution efforts on behalf of eOne’s portfolio of children’s programming.  Based in London, Joss reports to Olivier Dumont, Managing Director, Entertainment One Family. 

Effective immediately, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. (MSLO) hired Geoffrey A. Darby as GM for MSLO’s Television segment in charge of the company’s production and television operations.  Geoffrey reports to Lisa Gersh, MSLO President/COO.  In addition, Michael Morrison was tagged as Executive Producer of The Martha Stewart Show ready to premiere its seventh season on Hallmark Channel September 26.  Michael reports to Geoffrey Darby. 

Jim Loughran appointed as SVP/Digital Sales with NCC Media.  In his new position, Jim will be in charge of sales for the company’s digital advertising platforms.  Jim began his new position yesterday.

Mark Mooney joins The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) as VP/Regional Manager, Cable Ad Sales responsible for overseeing and implementing advertising and business opportunities for The Weather Channel, weather.com and TWCC mobile including tablets for the New York region.  Mark will head and develop a team of account managers within the region and will be based in New York.  Mark reports to Chris Raleigh, SVP/Cable and Cross Platform Sales, TWCC.  Most recently, Mark was an AE for CNN Networks.

MGM, effective immediately, employed Doug Finberg as EVP/Marketing to head all marketing activities for the studio.   Doug’s scope will also include all publicity efforts.  He reports to Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, Co-Chairman/CEOs, MGM. 

Diana Marseille received a promotion from Spike TV to become VP/Media Planning.  Diana will supervise the planning for all on-air promotion in addition to creating programming events and media plans.  She reports to Kevin Kay.

NBCUniversal named Jamie French to the newly-minted role as VP/Communications for The Style Network.  On behalf of the network, Jamie will manage all corporate messaging and media outreach for the consumer, trade and business sectors in addition to serving as primary spokesperson and as a member of the senior management team will offer insight into the overall direction of Style.  Jamie will report dually to Salaam Coleman Smith, President, The Style Network and to Cameron Blanchard, EVP/Communications, NBCUniversal Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media.

Former Director/Development at Embassy Row Factual, Ari Mark was hired by AMC as Director/Unscripted Original Programming.

Tribune Broadcasting appointed Bob Cook as a Strategic Advisor where he will work with and integrate into the company’s management team in various areas including sales strategies, developing and distributing original programming and overall spurring the company’s business growth.  Bob will report to Nils Larsen, CEO/President.
