Cynopsis: Kids!
09/06/06
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 6, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
In a stunner of a move, the news came out early yesterday morning that Tom Freston had resigned his position as President/CEO of Viacom. While the potential in-house ramifications of that news is being absorbed, it was also announced that Philippe Dauman has replaced Freston. The result on Wall Street wasn’t all positive – Viacom share prices fell 4% to $35.50. You’ll recall Viacom was split in January with Freston overseeing essentially the cable side, and Leslie Moonves the broadcast side, CBS Corp. Since January, Viacom’s shares have fallen by 15.7%, whereas CBS Corp has grown 12.6% in the same time period. I’m sure there will be more on the effect of this news as things develop.
MTVN Kids and Family Group launches additionally programming on iTunes this month. Launching this week on iTunes is The N’s Degrassi: The Next Generation. Throughout the month Nickelodeon shows set to be available on iTunes includes Drake & Josh, Unfabulous and Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide, as well as Nick Jr.’s series The Wonder Pets!, and the new season of Zoey 101. The network will also roll out a free sneak peek of its new series, Mr. Meaty, prior its on-air network debut.
Dreadful news, and not just for the Baudelaire children, this week marks the release of the newest book in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Beatrice Letters, from publisher HarperCollins, which will be followed by the final, and 13th book in the series, The End, set for coming October 13, 2006. In support of the release of the books and end of the series, the publisher has released “12 Books in 120 Seconds,” the first of what appears to be three online Vile Videos leading to the conclusion of the book series (aka The End), focusing on the author, Lemony Snicket. The video can be found at www.LemonySnicket.com/vilevideos. Each features the artwork of the series illustrator, Brett Helquist; the voice of Tim Curry; and the music of The Gothic Archies, a musical group helmed by Stephin Merritt (The Magnetic Fields), which will release an album inspired by A Series of Unfortunate Events titled The Tragic Treasury, on Nonesuch Records on October 10.
Fremantle International Distribution has inked another series of deals for its family-friendly series, Prehistoric Park (6 x 1hr) to broadcasters in Latin America including terrestrial channels: Canal 13/Artear (Argentina), Channel 7/TVN (Chile), Ecuavisa (Ecuador), Record (Brazil) and Televisora de Costa Rica/Channel 7 (Costa Rica). Created by Impossible Pictures, the producers of the Walking With… series, Prehistoric Park is hosted by natural history expert Nigel Marven who travels back in time, with the help of CGI animation, to rescue prehistoric animals. The series is a co-production between ITV (UK), Animal Planet (US), M6 (France) and ProSieben (Germany).
MARKETING/LICENSING
Hasbro Properties Group has entered into a multi-year agreement with indie book publisher Sourcebooks, Inc. to develop and publish a series of 20 Playskool-branded parenting guides, marking Playskool’s first adult license. Targeted to both new and experienced moms, the first four titles under the deal will be released in spring 2007, followed by an additional four titles by the end of the year. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Playskool says its parenting guides will be penned by a range of experts in areas including health and behavior offering practical advice on topics such as baby care, preparing for pregnancy, breast feeding, infants, toddlers, and potty training. Sourcebooks’ popular titles include Poetry Speaks to Children and 50,001 Best Baby Names.
Reebok expands its I Am What I Am marketing initiative with the launch of “When Did I Know?,” a new ad campaign (TV, online, print) featuring NFL players, slated to debut tomorrow night, September 7th, during the first 2006 NFL regular season game in select cities on NBC. Subsequently the ads will run during games on Fox and on ESPN’s Monday Night Football carried on Dish Network. Reflecting the Reebok brand positioning, the “When Did I Know?” campaign aims to underline NFL players as individuals through players telling the story of the moment in their life that defined their future career in football. Initially, the campaign includes 2 x 30-second spots with three players each. Additionally, Reebok, which is the NFL’s official apparel outfitter and exclusive licensee of NFL branded footwear, sees the new campaign as a way to “inspire” and “empower” kids to focus on their own goals as a way to achieve. Created by NY’s mcgarrybowen, produced for the web by Zugara, Inc. and directed by Errol Morris (The Thin Blue Line, The Fog of War), the TV ads will feature NFL players including Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts), Vince Young (Tennessee Titans), Steve Smith (Carolina Panthers), Torry Holt (St. Louis Rams), DeAngelo Hall (Atlanta Falcons) and Roy Williams (Dallas Cowboys), while print ads will feature Matt Hasselbeck (Seattle Seahawks), Donovan McNabb (Philadelphia Eagles), Holt and Hall.
Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front, a new live-action movie, will be released on DVD this November 28, 2006 by Warner Home Video. Based American Girl’s Molly book series, the DVD title revolves around Molly McIntire, a nine-year-old trying to grow-up in 1944 while her father, a doctor, is serving in the war overseas, and home life is turned on end with rationing, her mom working outside of home, and the arrival of Emily, a girl who has fled war-torn London and will now live with the McIntire’s. The movie’s cast features Molly Ringwald as Helen McIntire, Andrew Chalmers as Ricky McIntire, Tory Green as Emily and Maya Ritter as Molly. Prior to the DVD release, Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front will premiere on Disney Channel in November. The two previous American Girl movies premiered on The WB, Samantha: An American Girl Holiday premiered in November 2004 and Felicity: An American Girl Adventure bowed November 2005. Expect a DVD box set including all three American Girl movies for holiday 2006.
