~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

CBS’ Two and a Half Men debuted a new cast and a new season Monday at 9p to 28.74 million total viewers and posted a rating/share of 12.6/27 with A25-54 and a rating/share of 10.7/25 with A18-49.  Monday’s performance of Two and a Half Men marks series highs among total viewers, A25-54 and A18-49.  Meanwhile over at Comedy Central, the anticipated Roast of Charlie Sheen airing Monday night attracted 6.4 million total viewers and delivered a 4.5 rating among A18-49; 8.7 rating among M18-24; 7.0 rating with M18-34; and 6.2 rating with A18-34.  The Charlie Sheen Roast has the distinction of being Comedy Central’s most-watched and highest-rated COMEDY CENTRAL Roast ever in the franchise’s history. 

A new one-hour original series is on the docket in 2012 for Syfy as the network approved Dream Machines with six episodes.  Dream Machines follows brothers Marc and Shannon Parker, based in Florida, who take imaginative and fantasy vehicles seen in movies and television shows and renders them into real machines for the road.  The series is produced by Triage Entertainment with Steve Kroopnick and Stu Schreiberg serving as executive producers.  Syfy also handed renewal orders for a 6-episode sophomore season to Hollywood Treasure and a 12-episode second season to Haunted Collector.  All three series are slated to debut in second quarter 2012. 

A ten-episode third season of Hung debuts on HBO October 2 at 10p.  In the new season Ray and Tanya are taking their business to the next level.  Set in the suburbs of Detroit, Hung stars Thomas Jane, Jane Adams and Anne Heche and was created by Colette Burson and Dmitry Lipkin.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC has picked up a slew of projects in development

  • A drama titled The Murder Season from Castle executive producers Laurie Zaks and Moira Kirland. The hour-long plot is about Mia Donnelly, a talented though troubled FBI profiler who attempts to hide a dark secret from her past as she works with a top-level team to catch notorious criminals.  Kirland and Zaks will serve as executive producers on this project from ABC Studios.
  • The network also picked up an original script concept for a drama titled The Watchers from author Nicholas Sparks of The Notebook fame.  The project is about the Archangel Raphael who tosses his wings in favor of love with a mortal.  Temple Hill Entertainment will produce along with ABC Studios. Sparks and Kristin Hahn are writing the TV script. 
  • The network ordered a drama script from Alloy Entertainment, the production company behind several current dramas, Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries and The Secret Circle, per THR.  The new project is titled 666 Park and based on a book series by Gabriella Pierce.  The setting of the drama is an apartment building on the Upper East Side of New York City where the residents have all made deals with the Devil to have their desires fulfilled.  Warner Bros. Television and Alloy Entertainment will produce the project written and executive produced by David Wilcox and Alloy’s Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo. 
  • Furthermore, ABC okayed a drama project from Noah Hawley called Courtroom 302 produced by ABC Studios, reports THR.  The drama will look at the stories and personalities of the US District Court of New York City.  Mark Gordon is on board to executive produce the project. Hawley is writing the script and will also serve as executive producer with Gordon. 
  • Mark Gordon and his Mark Gordon Co. additionally sold a 30m comedy to ABC titled Virtual Virgin, cites THR. The comedy is about a woman who is dating in the age of technology with the advice of her close friends and family.  Gordon and Mark Gordon Co. head Andrea Shay will executive produce along with writers Keith Merryman and David Newman.  ABC Studios is producing.

A pair of All My Children cast members will continue their roles when the daytime drama resumes with an online version.  Prospect Park, the production company that bought the rights to continue All My Children as well as One Life to Live, announced both Cameron Mathison as Ryan Lavery and Lindsay Hartley as Dr. Cara Castillo Martin will appear on the online All My Children, marking the first cast members to cross over.  All My Children ends its 41-year run on ABC this Friday.

Cenk Uygur landed a new weeknight show at Current TV as host of The Young Turks set to debut this fourth quarter in the 7p time slot.  Uygur recently anchored a weeknight program on MSNBC at 6p and continues to host the daily online news show, The Young Turks airing on YouTube, featuring a group of progressive journalists and commentators.  For Current TV, The Young Turks will be adapted for television and is billed as a progressive and topical show about politics and pop culture.  Uygur’s new show will be produced from Current TV’s Los Angeles-based studios. 

A trio of series has begun production for HGTV

  • Junk Gypsies features social media experts and designers Amie Sikes and Jolie Sikes-Smith who find “junk” and use it to transform homes.  The sisters have a list of celebrity clients and a large social media fan base. Their series debuts with a sneak preview on November 27 at 7p.
  • Kitchen Cousins features designers/contractors and real-life cousins, Anthony Carrino and John Colaneri who operate a New Jersey-based family construction company.  This show will roll out by the end of 2011.
  • Weekends with Luis highlights Miami-based contractor Luis Bosch who helps homeowners undertake a weekend project that has been on the back burner and they didn’t know how to begin it.  This show will also be highlighted yet this year.
  • And looking down the road, HGTV has more than 30 new series coming for 2012. 

Margarita Levieva (Adventureland) is joining ABC’s new series Revenge in a recurring role playing a stripper with a notorious past, says EW.  Levieva’s character will be introduced starting with the seventh episode of the frosh season.  Revenge debuts tonight on ABC at 10p.

For the second season of AMC’s The Walking Dead, premiering October 16, Michael Zegen landed a recurring role of Randall who is a skinny Southern kid who realizes he is in a unique post-apocalypse situation.  Zegen last appeared on FX’s Rescue Me and in the film Adventureland.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:   ABC spiked a win Saturday night at 3.2/11 with the A18-49 viewers, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  ABC’s Saturday Night Football held court at 8p with a 2.5/9 while FOX’s double Cops episodes averaged a 1.1/4 in second place.  During 9p, ABC’s college match between Oklahoma and Florida State pulled in a 3.2/10 followed at a distance by Univision’s Sabado Gigante at 0.8/3.  Then in the final hour at 10p, ratings for ABC’s Saturday Night Football hiked even higher to a 3.8/12 and CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery rerun came next at 1.1/3.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  NBC had a golden evening Sunday delivering an 8.8/23 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  The night opened at 7p with NBC capturing the most viewers with Football Night in America Part 2 at 3.4/10 and CBS’ 60 Minutes repeat followed at 2.9/8.  NBC remained in first place at 8p with the average of Football Night in America Part 3 and the NBC Sunday Night Football game at 7.4/19 and the 63rd Annual Emmy Awards broadcast on FOX was #2 at 4.5/12.  NBC’s weekly NFL match-up won during 9p at 10.4/25 and FOX’s Emmys show scored less than half as much at 4.6/11.  Then at 10p, still at #1, NBC’s ratings did drop off for Sunday Night Football to a 9.8/25 and at the same time FOX’s Emmy ratings also dipped to a 3.7/10 in second place.

Monday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS rose well above the competition Monday winning with a 5.8/14 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen, thanks in large part to the network’s 9-10p hour.  At 8p, back-to-back How I Met Your Mother episodes, including the season premiere at 8p, won with an average of 5.0/13 and the season debut of Dancing with the Stars on ABC posted a 4.0/11 in #2; FOX’s Hell’s Kitchen was third at 2.6/7, Univision’s Teresa in fourth place at 2.2/6 while a new season of The Sing Off opened in fifth place on NBC at 2.0/5.  During the 9p hour, CBS continued to lead with monster ratings for the season return of Two and a Half Men earning a 10.7/25, and the series launch of 2 Broke Girls posting a 7.1/16, with an average of 8.9/21 for the hour.  The second hour of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars’ premiere remained in second place at 4.0/9.  The 10p hour was competitive with CBS’ Hawaii Five-O season premiere doing best at 3.4/8, the season bow of Castle on ABC playing second fiddle at 3.2/8 followed by the series debut of The Playboy Club on NBC in third place at 1.6/4.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

The nearly twenty-year veteran of the Walt Disney Company, Dene B. Stratton was tapped by MGM as CFO.  Dene begins his new position effective immediately, reporting to both Co-Chairmen and CEOs Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum.  Most recently, Dene was CFO for the online start-up, TRC Media (Ireland) Limited and at the Walt Disney Company his last position was CFO, Jetix Europe.

Former White House Secretary, Ari Fleischer joins CNN as a Contributor working with the network’s team of political contributors in anticipation of the 2012 election season.  Ari will contribute to various programs across CNN in addition to special political programming.

Mike Zarrilli was hired by The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) in the newly-created role as VP/International.  Mike will head the overall strategy and oversight of The Weather Channel’s international digital businesses, concentrating on Western Europe, Asia and Latin America.  He reports to Cameron Clayton, EVP/Digital Productions, TWCC. 

Carole Smith takes on a new position with WE tv as VP/Research, joining from Current TV in the same capacity.  Based in New York City, Carole reports to Tom Ziangas, SVP/Research, AMC Networks.

Suzette Millo advances to VP/Publicity and Strategy with Telemundo where she will continue to spearhead the publicity activities for the network’s programming and productions in addition to the overall positioning of the network.  She will now also focus on publicity for special events management and talent business strategy, working in tandem with the sales and marketing teams.  Suzette further continues to report to Alfredo Richard, SVP/Corporate Communications and Talent Strategy.

Elizabeth Wilner was appointed as VP/Strategic Initiatives for the Campaign Media Analysis Group (CMAG), a Kantar Media Solution entity.  Elizabeth previously served as the political director for NBC News and in her new capacity she will open an office for CMAG in New York and work with clients in Washington, D.C.  Elizabeth reports to Ken Goldstein, President, CMAG.

44 Blue Productions hired Arielle Worona as Manager/Development.  Arielle will pinpoint ways to help 44 Blue expand its slate into new genres including docu-series, formats and first-run syndicated strips.
