Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 14, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
Recent optimism about renewed labor talks between the NBA and the players association now appear to be for naught. Both sides stepped away from the bargaining table Tuesday without any resolution and throwing the start of the regular season in doubt. . The start of the NBA season was thrown into doubt Tuesday after players and owners remained divided over the salary cap structure at a key labor meeting. Reports say the biggest obstacle to any deal isn’t revenue sharing (although that’s still a big bump)but the salary cap with owners pushing for a hard cap, while player seek to keep the current system in place.
Training camps were expected to open Oct. 3 if a deal was in place with the regular season opening on Nov. 1.
CBS Sports’ coverage of the men’s 2011 U.S.Open Championship scored an 18% increase over last year’s numbers according to Nielsen overnights, to score a 2.6 on Monday, in which Novak Djokovic dispatched Rafael Nadal in four sets. Overall, the tournament was watched in all-or-part by51.3 million viewers (persons 2+),to mark a 17% increase from last year’s tally of 44.0 million.
Monday Night Football dominated the small screen for ESPN’s first week of the season, beating all other networks, although the channel’s doubleheader was off slightly from 2010 scores. The opening game, featuring Patriots/Dolphins, averaged 14.6 million viewers, according to Nielsen for a year-to-year dip of 2%. The late game, featuring the Broncos/Raiders, drew 11th.1 million viewers, off 9% from the 2010 equivalent. Online NFL content across the ESPN digital platforms logged an average minute audience of nearly 200,000 users, for a 32 percent increase compared to the same two days last season.
Meanwhile, ESPN’s fresh extension for MNF has caught the attention of some small cable operators, who say that the deal with unfairly push subscription costs upward for consumers. Matt Polka, president of the American Cable Association, told a radio show on Tuesday that unless operators can shift ESPN off of the basic tier and allow viewers to opt in, too many non-sports fans will be forced to pay for the channels. Polka later said lawmakers may be forced to get involved.
NBC News announced today in addition to her new role as special correspondent for Rock Center with Brian Williams, Meredith Vieira will also contribute the 2012 London Olympic Games next summer.
MMA promotion Bellator Fighting Championships continued its upward rise, drawing around 235,000 viewers for its first event of the fall season on MTV2. That number marks an 18% increase from the Season 4 average of 204,000 viewers.
As if the Big 12 drama wasn’t enough, the Palm Beach Post reports that Florida State is forming a committee to explore the university’s options in conference realignment. With Oklahoma seemingly locked in to a potential Pac-12 deal and arch-rival Texas reportedly in talks with the ACC, Andy Haggard, chairman of FSU’s board of trustees said he hopes to have the committee in place by next week.
CNN is gearing up for a look at women’s boxing, which will finally become an official event at the 2012 Games, with anchor and special correspondent Soledad O’Brien profiles Houston-based, Mexican-American fighter Marlen Esparza in an upcoming episode of In Her Corner: Latino in America. The episode will air on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 8p.
