Warner Bros. International Television Distribution and TV4 Group struck a multi-year output deal allowing the Scandinavian broadcaster the free-TV and basic cable rights for a cadre of programming. This deal is the first time WBITD has made a pan-regional deal exclusively with a single broadcaster in Scandinavia. The deal gives TV4 Group licensing rights for new television programs from the 2011-2012 season in the US; a collection of films from Warner Bros. Pictures’ including Inception, Sherlock Holmes and The Blind Side in addition to upcoming releases such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Parts I and II), The Hangover 2 and Green Lantern among others; and previously released featured feature films and television series from the Warner Bros. Entertainment roster and animated programming.

Veria, the lifestyle and wellness network made a spate of international deals with networks in Canada, Israel, Thailand and Korea for its original programs. Canada’s Body, Mind and Spirit Channel picked up 52 eps of Veria’s reality series The Incurables; international cable operators Stornaway Communications in Canada and True Visions in Thailand have each licensed 26 eps of The Genesis of Healing; and Israel’s Ananey Communications licensed 26 eps of the lifestyle series What Happens Next for Health Channel. Scotland’s Red Kite Animations, Spain’s Tomavistas, The Netherlands’ Submarine and Spain’s broadcaster Televisio de Catalunya declared production on the animated series Ask Lara will soon begin. ITV Studios Global Entertainment and US production company BASE Productions made a distribution development deal. SevenOne International sold the production rights to the game show, My Man Can to FremantleMedia in Spain, Portugal and Latin America. SevenOne International also made deals for the project in France and Italy.

The Gurin Company is offering a new half-hour game show titled Las Vegas Ride to Riches for the first time at MIPCOM. The game show was created by Maury Leitner, formerly of Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution and developed by Phil Gurin behind such shows as Singing Bee and Your Chance to Dance.

And on a personal note … Two extraordinarily different kinds of meetings yesterday on the floor of the Palais here at MIPCOM, demonstrated to me the very essence why people gather in Cannes for this event not once, but twice annually.  The first with children’s shows producers Three Stones Media who told me about their newest project, RastaMouse.  A stop-frame animation project about a Rasta speaking, music playing, lessons learning mouse.  Now I’ve seen a lot of pitches in my time – some great, some not so great – but this one from the show creators was different because of the sheer joy and bubbling enthusiasm these two producers took in talking about their project.  No flip charts, no powerpoint, no razzle dazzle.  The difference is hearing the story directly from the creators and these two shared their story so delightfully, it’s hard not to rise to become sold on it.  Tho the actually selling is left to the distributor down the hall.   …  From there, it was a quick walk over to the Asian Pavilion for an entirely different kind of meeting with Kamil Othman, the VP of Creative Industry Strategy & Policy for the Malaysian government-run MDeC (Multimedia Development Corporation).  He told me about his country of 28 million people, and that their children like to watch Disney, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, as well as their locally produced shows.  But for years, MDeC and the local producers of shows tried to produce programming that would appeal not just domestically, but internationally and poured millions into those productions to no avail. Each time they found their local shows were too, well, local.  And then they began pouring money into the development of the shows rather than just the production end, and found with stunningly beautiful 3D animation, that included a little influence from the East and a dash of things they particularly liked from the West, they were able to create a recipe for a kids program that did appeal internationally.  They are here at MIPCOM both selling those projects as well as setting up co-production partnerships with companies from around the world. Two very different sellers of content, both infectiously enthusiastic.  This is why I come to Cannes.
