Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 4, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing. 

Heeee’s back… Haim Saban has returned to kids TV with the announcement that he, and his Saban Entertainment Group (SEG), have established a new virtual studio that will tap into freelance creators, writers, and producers etc. to help in develop, brand and promote new kid/family centric multi-media properties.  Set to be introduced at Mipcom next week, the studio’s first project, Hollywood Star Dogs, the series is a collaboration with writer/producer/director Holly Goldberg Sloan.  Hollywood Star Dogs (26 x 30′), is live-action series featuring talking dogs, through the help of CGI animation, in classic fairy tales.  Additionally, SEG has entered into a development deal with Tiny Island Animation, a Singapore based animation studio headed by David Kwok.  Under the deal Tiny Island will develop projects provided by SEG.  The first such project, a CGI animated comedy, is currently in development.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Cartoon Network has wrapped principle photography on Re-Animated, its first original live-action TV movie, which also features combined live-action and animated elements.  Re-Animated is about Jimmy Roberts, a 12-yr-old who has an accident and finds himself in need of a brain transplant, only to end up with the brain of a famous cartoonist, played by Fred Willard, and from there on, Jimmy sees the world differently, a world of cartoon characters all of whom turn his life upside down.  Jimmy is played by Dominic Janes, with other cast members, including Paul Reubens, Tom Kenny, Ellen Greene and Brian Posehn, lend their voices to the cartoon characters that come to life just for Jimmy.  Created/written by Adam Pava and Tim McKeon and directed by Bruce Hurwit, Re-Animated is a Renegade Animation, Appleday Pictures, and Cartoon Network production.  The airdate for the movie is TBD.

The cast of Paramount/Nickelodeon movie The Spiderwick Chronicles is growing, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Currently in the midst of negotiations to join the cast are Mary-Louise Parker as the Mom, Nick Nolte and Martin Short as the ghost-like Mulgrath and Thimbletack/Bogart respectively, and Joan Plowright as the kids aunt.  Also signing on as part of the cast are Andrew McCarthy, who will play the dad, and Izabella Miko, who will serve as the leader of the elves.

9 Story Entertainment heads to Mipcom with its new development slate including five new animated projects.

  • Almost Naked Animals – targeted to K6-11, the property is based on the website of the same name, which pretty much has cartoon animals in their undies and it is pretty funny stuff, all created by illustrator Noah Z. Jones.  (

  • Bash Boys – an action-adventure/comedy series is set in the future, when democracy is extinct due to one evil guy.  Doc Bash is the only person who can save the world and to do it he sends his tween son, Rick, back in time to beat the evil guy.  Helping Rick in his efforts is a 13-yr-old named Doc … hmmm.
  • The Mystery of Oak Island is a feature length action-adventure movie based on Joan Clark’s young adult novel, The Hand of Robin Squires.  Set in the late 18th Century, the story follows Robin Squires, a teen who travels to the New World with his unscrupulous Uncle Edward.  Once there, Robin befriends a native, and discovers his Uncle is not such a great guy.
  • SuperEwe – a comedy series aimed at K8-12 that focuses on an ordinary sheep named Mabel.  Mable’s life changes when after drinking an experimental potion, she does the sheep-wool thing by day and she is SuperEwe by night, with her new powers of super-sight, -hearing, and -strength.
  • Alpha Bands is a 2D/3D sci-fi series for Tweens 9-14 that reveals that Earth is actually a Beta site, created by the governing body of Alpha Earth, called MAST.  The show follows Yuyang, the teenager son of an activist leader and former MAST scientist, who must make his way to Beta Earth to protect it from Alpha’s evil environmental experiments.

Bejuba Entertainment heads to Mipcom Jr. with The Likeaballs (26 x 10′), its new animated series about the adventures of a group of soccer-ball shaped aliens.  Targeted to K6-11, The Likeaballs often use their positive attitudes and teamwork to solve the various problems they come up against.  Created by Jim Quick and produced for Animated Adventures and Pictures by Cosgrove House Films, The Likeaballs airs in the UK on CBBC and BBC 2.  The Likeaballs has entered into an exclusive long-term partnership with the soccer brand, The FA Premier League.  Bejuba holds the worldwide broadcast rights for The Likeaballs outside of the UK. 4Kids Entertainment International maintains worldwide merchandising and licensing rights.

Polara Productions has inked a deal with Arsenal Pictures International to represents its kid’s series Nanna’s Cottage at the upcoming Mipcom market.  Under the deal Arsenal will handle all commercial sales and distribution of the series outside the US.  Meanwhile, Polara will continue to handle sales of the series directly to non-commercial and faith-based broadcasters worldwide.  The series is slated to bow this November 2006 on Family Television network in New Zealand and on Australia’s Christian Channel.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Cookie Jar Entertainment appointed Coolabi as its merchandising and licensing agents in the UK.  Under the pact, Coolabi will represent Cookie Jar’s properties Spider Riders, The Doodelbops and Caillou.  Coolabi will attend Brand Licensing London this week with these three Cookie Jar’s properties.

VIZ Media has tapped Ty’s Toy Box to handle its e-commerce fulfillment operations.  Under the agreement, Ty’s Toy Box will be responsible for technology, merchandising, warehousing, fulfillment and customer care or VIZ’s online stores, the first of which, http://narutostore.viz.com, launched last month.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Mainframe Entertainment, Inc. welcomes noted Executive Producer, Ken Tsumura as its new SVP/Production and Technology.  Tsumura is charged with continuing to grow Mainframe’s feature film unit, in addition to overseeing production and technology on new TV series, commercials and game projects.  Previously Tsumura was Producer and Production Manager on animated movies and series including Curious George and Adam Sandler’s Eight Crazy Nights, Father of the Pride, The Simpsons among others.

Leila Pirnia has been upped to VP/Global Brand Management, DIC Entertainment. Pirnia will oversee a group of global brand managers and guide the company’s strategic direction across all lines of business for its properties.  She will report to Head of Global Sales, Nancy Fowler.  Prior to the promotion, Pirnia served as VP/Strategic Planning & Business Development.  Previously, she was an analyst for Merrill Lynch’s Global Media Investment Banking Group.
