Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 3, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing. 

The CW will call it quits for its Kids’ WB at the end of the 2007-8 season, but not for kids Saturday morning programming.  The CW has inked a five-year pact with 4Kids Entertainment to oversee programming, marketing and ad sales for a new kids block, beginning with the 2008-9 season.  A couple of years back the network dropped its Kids’ WB after school kids programming.  Of course, The CW isn’t the first broadcast network to take this path: CBS Saturday morning kids block Kewlopolis (new title for 2007-8 season) overseen by DIC Entertainment; NBC’s qubo block handled with ION Media Networks; and the Fox Saturday morning grid 4Kids TV, also managed by 4Kids Entertainment.  4Kids will continue to handle its block on Fox as well as adding oversight of a kid-targeted programming block on The CW.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Writer Steve Moffat (Doctor Who, Jekyll) is penning the DreamWorks’ Tintin movie, per the Hollywood Reporter.  The Tintin movie trilogy is an adaptation of Herge’s Tintin comic strip and books, and comes from the combined creative minds of Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, each of which will direct one of the movies.

MORE KIDS STUFF

qubo has acquired rights to the animated characters the Zimmer Twins, in a new partnership with Bejuba! Entertainment and zinc Roe, creators of the interactive cartoon property.  The co-branded Zimmer Twins will be featured on qubo.com from December 2007, featuring games, puzzles and animation creative and storytelling tools.  To support the property, Zimmer Twins will be promoted qubo’s broadcast and digital services, NBC, ION and Telemundo and on the qubo channel, through mini story clips that ask viewers how they’d end the story.  The Zimmer Twins program is designed around simple storytelling elements including basic sentence structure, as well as reading, grammar, and writing, all of which promotes qubo’s reading and literacy efforts.

PorchLight Entertainment inks a deal with PBS station WETA in Washington, D.C. to serve as the presenting station for the K6-10 targeted CGI animated series Animalia (40×26) across PBS stations nationwide, where the series is slated to debut on stations from January 2008. Produced by Burberry/Lux Monkey/DoubleBase Productions in association with PorchLight Entertainment, Animalia series is based on Graeme Base’s picture book of the same name.  Animalia is distributed internationally by BBC Worldwide, and across North America by PorchLight Entertainment.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The Princess Bride will be coming our way in digital game form next month.  Worldwide Biggies has completed an exclusive licensing pact with Act III Licensing to develop games based on the movie The Princess bride (1987).  The first games include a downloadable game, True Love and High Adventure  The Official Princess Bride Game, and The Official Princes Bride DVD Game, which will be available exclusively on The Princess Bride 20th Anniversary DVD, releasing November 13, 2007 from MGM Home Entertainment.

Ready or not holiday season is just a few short months away, and to remind us there are many top toy lists, including Toy Wishes magazine’s 9th annual Holiday Hot Dozen list of toys to keep your eye on, presented yesterday at the Toy Wishes Holiday Preview event held in NYC.  In presenting the list Editor-in-Chief Jim Silver noted the current concerns about issues of toy safety for both parents and the toy industry alike, and pointing out that “new policies and procedures at all levels of the production process,” will lead to more safe toy products.  The Toy Wishes Holiday 2007 Hot Dozen (alphabetically):

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Fox Licensing & Merchandising has upped Carl Lumbard to SVP and Managing Director, Fox L&M Europe.  Lumbard joined the company in 1998 and is credited with helping to grow the L&M division including managing and building The Simpsons brand across Europe and the Ice Age program.

MTV Networks International brings on new folks to its international Nickelodeon Emerging Markets team.

  • Alex Chien joins the team in London as Head of Nickelodeon, Emerging Markets.  She will manage existing Nickelodeon channels in Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Russia as well as Nickelodeon brand expansion.  Chien was previously VP/Creative and Content for Nickelodeon Networks Asia.  She will report to Bhavneet Singh, MD and SVP/Emerging Markets, MTVNi.
  • Erinn Thompson has been named to the newly created position of Program and Acquisition Manager. Based in London, she will oversee all programming, scheduling and acquisitions for Nickelodeon in the region, reporting to Chien.  Most recently she was Acquisition Supervisor for Disney Channels UK, Scandinavia, Middle East, and Emerging Markets.
  • Lisa Wakefield has been tapped as Marketing Executive for the group from the same position in the Emerging Markets at Zonemedia.  Working out London, she will handle all marketing activity and creative across the region, also reporting to Chien.

RATINGS

Setting an overall Primetime cable TV record, for 3Q 2007 Disney Channel delivered 3.2 million Total Viewers, the biggest audience for a cable network in any day part for a 3Q.  The network also had the second largest Primetime audience for any quarter ever on cable, trailing just behind ESPN’s 3.3 million Total Viewers in 3Q 2006.  The 3Q 2007 was Disney Channel’s most watched quarter ever in Total Day among Total Viewers 1.9 million, K6-11 759,000 and Tweens 9-14 660,000, as well as in Primetime across K6-11 1.3 million and Tweens 9-14 1.2 million.  Of course Disney Channel’s 3Q got a big boost from the August 17, 2007 premiere of High School Musical 2, which earned its biggest Total Viewer 18.6 million ever.

Toon Disney hit an all time ratings high with the largest Primetime and Total Day audiences for a quarter in the network’s history.  For 3Q 2007 Toon Disney hit a Primetime high with K2-11 209,000, increasing year-to-year by +46%.  In Total Day for the quarter K2-11 155,000 set a new record, up versus last year by +21%.  The debut of the movie The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl on August 6, 2007 (5-7p) stood out as the network’s top movie telecast ever among K2-11 719,000 and K6-11 520,000.
