First season comedy The Neighbors and second season drama Scandal received back-nine orders from ABC, giving both series full orders for the 2012-13 season.  The Neighbors improved its ratings for its most recent airing at a 2.0 A18-49 rating and 7 million viewers.  Scandal had similar results posting a 2.0 demo rating and 6.1 million total viewers.  These two pickups are ABC’s first full season orders for the fall season.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

The Walt Disney Company is acquiring Lucasfilm Ltd. in a stock and cash transaction.  Lucasfilm is wholly owned by Lucasfilm Chairman and Founder, George Lucas.  Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney stock as of last Friday, the transaction value is $4.05 billion, with Disney paying around half in cash and issuing approximately 40 million shares at closing.  The final consideration will be subject to normal post-closing balance sheet adjustments.   The deal gives Disney ownership of Lucasfilm and its Star Wars franchise and its current businesses encompassing live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects and audio post production.  Disney will also own the various entertainment technologies under Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco including LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound.  At this time, the current Lucasfilm employees will remain in their present locations.  Kathleen Kennedy, Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn.  Kennedy will also be the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s worldwide lines of businesses to build, integrate and maximize the value of this global franchise.  Furthermore, Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films with George Lucas serving as creative consultant.  Star Wars Episode 7 will be released in 2015 with more feature films planned in the future.  The Boards of Directors of both Disney and Lucasfilm have approved this transaction which is subject to clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, certain non-US merger control regulations and other normal closing conditions.  The agreement has also been approved by the sole shareholder of Lucasfilm.

NBC detailed its midseason schedule including the premiere date for Community set for February 7 at 8p.  Originally, the network was to debut Community’s new season on October 19.  Community will take over the time slot currently occupied by the final season of 30 Rock which will have concluded its 13-episode season.  Also in midseason, Parks and Recreation will move up an hour to 830p as of January 17 with comedy Up All Night going on an extended hiatus from December to April/May (as announced yesterday).  New NBC series premiere dates include: Deception on January 7 at 10p; 1600 Penn January 10 at 930p; and Ready for Love bowing on March 31 with a two-hour premiere at 8p.  Returning series consist of the fourth season of The Voice on March 25-26; Revolution wraps its fall run in November and is back March 25 at 10p; The Biggest Loser featuring the return of Jillian Michaels, is back starting January 6-7 airing on Mondays from 8-10p until the return of The Voice; Betty White’s Off Their Rockers returns January 8 with back-to-back episodes at 8p and 830p; Smash debuts its second season on February 5 with a two-hour episode at 9p and will settle into its regular day and time starting February 12 at 10p; and The Celebrity Apprentice is back beginning March 3 from 9-11p for four weeks before airing one-hour episodes on March 31 at 10p.

Not surprising, The Weather Channel delivered the highest reach of any cable network on Sunday, tallying more than 39 million total viewers that tuned in for breaking coverage of Hurricane Sandy.  Additionally, TWC posted an average audience of more than 1.4 million total viewers on Sunday, making the network the #1 non-children cable network for the day.  With A25-54 viewers, TWC had a Total Day delivery of 590,000 on Sunday, the network’s highest Total Day target demo delivery average for 2012.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

NBC is not moving forward with a spinoff show from The OfficeRainn Wilson was due to star in The Farm which will air as a back-door pilot of The Office this season.  The project centers on Dwight (Wilson) as a beet farmer running a bed and breakfast inn.  Back-door pilots air as a test-run to help the network determine if the project is worthy to move forward.  NBC in this instance has made the decision even before the episode aired.  NBC has not officially announced this news though reports say the episode will air in The Office as planned.

Glee’s Grant Gustin is moving to The CW as the actor has been cast in a multiple-episode run on 90210’s fifth season.  Gustin will play Campbell on 90210, a charming, handsome college student from a wealthy and privileged background.  Gustin will return to FOX’s Glee to reprise his role as Sebastian Smythe in an upcoming episode.

FOX’s midseason thriller The Following booked Mike Colter (Ringer) in the recurring role of FBI bureaucrat Nick Donovan, reports TVLine.  The series from Kevin Williamson is about a deranged serial killer by the name of Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) who creates his own cult of murderers using technology and the retired FBI profilers Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) who is hunting him down.  Colter’s character is brought in to head the Carroll case and supervise Agent Hardy.

This day in History: October 31 Halloween – dates back to the Celtic farming festival Samhain.  As the crops died at the end of the harvest season, farmers believed there was a day when spirits could rise from their graves.  During Samhain, people would dress in disguise to fool and ward off the spirits, and hope that their land would survive through the winter.   In the eighth century, Christians sought to transform the pagan holiday.  Pope Gregory III declared November 1 to be the feast of All Saints’ Day. The night before became known as All Hollow’s Eve.
