Cynopsis: Sports
10.30.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 30, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The World Series continues to drive FOX Sports. Game 5 delivered the network with a 8.9/14 national household rating with 14.4 million viewers, according to fast nationals from Nielsen. The nail biter that gave the Red Sox a 3-2 lead in the series was up 1% over the last World Series Game 5, which took place in 2011. Through five games, the 2013 World Series on FOX is averaging an 8.5/14 and 14.1 million viewers for a 12% spike over last year’s World Series (7.6/12, 12.7 million viewers), and ranks as the highest-rated World Series since the New York Yankees met the Philadelphia Phillies in 2009.

On the Air

Continuing our ratings rewind… Up against the World Series, ESPN’s Monday Night Football telecast may not have outscored the game but did manage to snag some of the key male demos, and took the night among males 18-49. Overall, the Seahawks/Rams telecast delivered a 6.7 rating, for an average of 10,762,000 viewers according to Nielsen. Through eight weeks and nine games, ESPN’s MNF is averaging an 8.3 US rating and 13,065,000 viewers in 2013.

NBC reports that Sunday Night Football drew 16.9 million viewers for the network while also up against the World Series. While that is down from the season average of 22.1 million viewers for the franchise, it did top World Series viewership that evening, with Game 4 earning 16 million viewers.

Meanwhile, ABC’s Saturday Night Football telecast pitting Ohio State and Penn State on October 26 ranked as the most-viewed college football game of the week across all cable and broadcast networks, according to Nielsen. The Big Ten matchup averaged 4,059,000 viewers and a 2.5 household score. ESPN2 saw its most-viewed game of the 2013 season on Saturday, averaging 3,051,000 viewers and a 1.8 rating for South Carolina’s 27-24 win against Missouri. ESPN’s Saturday prime-time telecast of Oregon and UCLA ranked as the network’s most-viewed game of the day, generating 3,674,000 viewers and a 2.3 rating.

Saturday’s wild finish to Game Three of the 2013 World Series handed MLB Network with its most-watched Postseason edition of MLB Tonight ever, delivering an average of 235,000 viewers tuning in after the game to the coverage live from Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

NBCSN announced that the network will deliver national coverage of two MLS Cup Playoff matches with the Western and Eastern Conference Knockout Round. Today at 10:30p on NBCSN will see Clint Dempsey and the Seattle Sounders FC host the Colorado Rapids, while tomorrow at 8:30p will see the Montreal Impact visit the Houston Dynamo. For the Knockout Round, NBCSN will simulcast local feeds from NBC affiliate KONG-TV in Seattle for the Sounders/Rapids match and CSN-Houston for the Dynamo/Impact game.

Universal Sports Network premieres Countdown to Sochi tonight at 8p. The weekly series will showcase the most compelling stories leading up to the 2014 Sochi Games in a span of 15-weeks on Wednesday nights. Wednesday’s premiere episode features alpine skier and two-time Olympian and World Cup gold medalist, Steven Nyman and U.S. Figure Skating men’s champion Max Aaron.

Believe it or not, the UFC is celebrating 20 years. To commemorate the occasion, FOX Sports 1 lined up a new two-hour documentary dubbed Fighting for a Generation: 20 Years of the UFC. The special will air on the channel on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 9p and showcase “the rise of the organization, from early days of dealing with political pressure and financial hardship, to successfully building a worldwide brand.” More than 60 interviews from past and present owners, fighters, celebrities and politicians, were conducted over a four-month period for the program.

ESPN locked in Jon Barry to a multi-year deal to serve as the lead analyst for NBA on ESPN Radio. Barry will work on more than 40 regular-season and playoff broadcasts this season. Meanwhile, Kevin Calabro, who has called NBA games on ESPN Radio since 2008, returns as the play-by-play voice and will partner with Barry throughout the season. ESPN also reached an agreement with Stan Van Gundy to join ESPN Radio’s NBA coverage team where he will serve as a game analyst for 10 broadcasts during the 2013-14 NBA regular season. In addition, Van Gundy will continue to serve as one of the rotating guest hosts on the Miami-based The Dan Le Batard Show.

Sirius XM Radio announced today that Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski will return to the company to host a ninth season of his weekly SiriusXM show, Basketball and Beyond with Coach K. A new episode debuts tomorrow at 6p on SiriusXM College Sports Nation where he will welcome Rick Pitino.

A Quick Plug: CEO Larry Lieberman of video chatroom app, OoVoo, spoke with Cynopsis about the power of social media when it comes to marketing. “Social media genuinely offers superior targeting and engagement,” he said. “I have no doubt predicting in the future that ultimately brand dependence upon social media will grow far larger than their reliance upon sports marketing and other lifestyle marketing.” Hear more from Lieberman on our “Social Media & The Second Screen” panel at the Cynopsis Measurement Summit on Nov. 13 in New York City.
