10.02.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 2, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

ESPN Deportes Radio and the NFL formally announced a new multiyear agreement for media rights for the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 seasons. Under the deal, the network will get exclusive Spanish-language rights to Monday Night Football as well as the 2013-14 NFC Playoffs, the 2014 Super Bowl, 2015 Pro Bowl and the 2014-2015 AFC Playoffs. The MNF broadcasts kicked off Monday, September 3rd.

On the Air

This week’s MNF telecast on ESPN handed the channel with another win among all networks for the night in households as well as all key male and adult demos. The Saints victory earned an 8.6 score, off slightly from last week’s 8.9 Nielsen score, to mark an average of 13,717,000 viewers. On the local front, the game drew a 13.1 rating on ESPN and a 4.0 on WSFL-CW in Miami while New Orleans generated a 21.7 rating on ESPN and a 39.3 on WDSU-NBC.

With numbers in for Sunday Night Football, the Patriots/Falcons game drew an average of 20.5 million viewers for NBC, according to official national data from Nielsen. That was good enough to earn Premiere Week’s highest primetime rating with a 12.5/20. Top markets were led by Boston with a 36.0/55, followed by Providence, Atlanta, New Orleans and Richmond.

Ratings for ABC and ESPN’s college football telecasts saw ABC’s Saturday Night Football Presented by Windows average 6,751,000 viewers and a 4.0 household rating. Meanwhile, a prime-time doubleheader pushed ESPN to finish second across all networks in the key male and adult demographics on Saturday night as Alabama’s win at 6:30p delivered an average of 4,022,000 viewers and a 2.3 HH score while Stanford’s victory over Washington State at 10p averaged 1,851,000 viewers and a 1.2 HH rating.

USA Rugby inked a broadcasting partnership with FOX Sports for the upcoming Men’s Eagles match against the New Zealand Maori All Blacks that takes place on Nov. 9 at PPL Park in Philadelphia at 7p. The broadcast will take place on Sunday, Nov. 10 at noon. The New Zealand Maori All Blacks are returning to American soil for the first time since the 2006 Churchill Cup.

The Harlem Globetrotters are now owned by Georgia-based Herschend Family Entertainment Corp., which bought the famed brand from Shamrock Capital Advisors. HFE, which owns family-themed attractions around the country, made the acquisition with an eye toward expanding into new media, audience and markets. Terms of the deal were not revealed.

The America East Conference unveiled its basketball television package for the 2013-14 season, which will feature more games on ESPN networks than ever before with 21 regular-season games, as well as every men’s and women’s America East Championship contest and both title games on the docket. Programming will include the women’s championship game on ESPNU for the first time while the men’s will continue to air on ESPN2.

BTN slated 43 women’s basketball conference games, six non-conference and 10 Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament games for the upcoming season. With six Big Ten teams selected to the 2013 NCAA Championship, the Big Ten expects to enter this season with several ranked teams. The season tips off on Nov. 17 at noon with defending Big Ten Champion Penn State hosting eight-time NCAA Champion Connecticut.

CBS Sports Network continues to bolster its presence, locking in a deal with Time Warner Cable. The channel is now part of Time Warner Cable’s DTV-Digital TV package on most systems. With the agreement, the outlet is now seen in over 53 million homes and available to more than 99 million households across the country. In the last 12 months, CBS Sports Network has experienced a 18% distribution increase, representing more than seven million additional subscribers.

MLB Network’s 165 hours of programming covering the 2013 Postseason will include two exclusive LDS game telecasts this Friday, October 4, with Bob Costas, Jim Kaat and Sam Ryan on the call, and on Monday, October 7, with Matt Vasgersian, Kaat and Ryan. The channel is bringing in a slew of players to serve as guest studio analysts throughout the month including Raul Ibanez, Adam Jones, Mark Teixeira, Mark DeRosa and Ken “Hawk” Harrelson.

With the NBA season on the horizon, league stars Tyson Chandler (Knicks), Stephen Curry (Warriors), Kenneth Faried (Nuggets), and DeAndre Jordan (Clippers) are set to appear on Disney XD “Pranksgiving,” starting Monday, November 4th. Each Monday, a new fan-voted prank will be revealed on Disney XD along with new prank-themed episodes that include Dwight Howard guest starring in the new comedy series Mighty Med.

Outside Television locked in a new distribution agreement with Cox Communications that will make the network available throughout Cox’s national footprint, where it will be part of the new Sports Pak 2 tier. The deal makes Outside available in nine of the ten largest U.S. cities and 17 of the top 20.

Sportsman Channel will feature Giants All-Pro defensive end Justin Tuck in an upcoming two-part edition of Bowhunter TV on Friday, Oct. 4 and 11 at 9p. The episodes will see Tuck in Argentina in search of big game. Tuck also will participate in a live Twitter chat on October 11 to answer viewer questions.
