Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 25, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing. 

Joining the cast of New Line Cinema’s adaptation of the young-adult fantasy novel Inkeart are Helen Mirren, Andy Serkis, Rafi Gavron and Sienna Guillory, per Daily Variety.  Based on author Cornelia Funke’s book trilogy, the story revolves around a father who brings characters to life from a book as he reads aloud to his own kids.  Funke also serves as a producer on the project with Barry Mendel.  Lain Softley is set to direct the movie, which begins filming next month in Europe, from a screenplay by David Lindsay-Abaire.  The cast also includes Brendan Fraser, Paul Bettany and Jim Broadbent.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nicktoons Network will make a selection of its original programming available at the iTunes Store beginning this week this week.  Nicktoons Network content available for download (at the standard iTunes rate of $1.99 each) includes short-form content from The Nicktoons Network Animation Festival, including 13 complications from the 2004 Animation Festival, eight from 2005 and seven from this year’s event.  Additionally, a sneak-peek at the network’s newest animated adventure series Skyland, which doesn’t premiere on the network until Saturday, November 18, at 9p, can be downloaded now.  Skyland features a combination of animation styles including CGI and motion capture.

Pocoyo (52 x 7′), the pre-school animated series makes its Portuguese debut this week on RTP2, where it airs twice daily.  Pocoyo is also set to launch next month, November 2006, on Italy’s cable and satellite kids’ channel RAI SAT YoYo.  The series also recently premiered on Spain’s TVE La 2.  Pocoyo is co-produced by Zinkia Entertainment (Spain) and Granada International (UK).  The show is supported in Portugal by an integrated licensing, publishing and merchandising effort, crafted by Zinkia, and featuring partners: Bandai, the master toy licensee; licensing company CPLG; publishing house Planeta; and Lusomundo, a DVD distributor.  Additionally, department store El Corte Ingles will introduce a range of plush toys and merchandising for holiday 2006.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Screenlife, LLC and Mattel have released Disney Princess Dream Journey, a new DVD role-playing game targeted to girls.  Packaged with a tiara and a controller, players take on the identity of one of six Disney Princesses, including Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Ariel, Cinderella, Jasmine, and Belle.  With the help of game host Angela Lansbury, players navigate their character through various Princess movies, play games and puzzles, and movie clips and songs.

Hasbro Inc.’s Playskool toy division has entered into an agreement with My Gym Children’s Fitness Center, to serve as the official toy brand for My Gym.  Playskool will begin rolling out products and plans now through the course of the year.  The deal was put together with the help of the media company Channel M.

Majesco Entertainment Company has shipped off its new game Nacho Libre for the Nintendo DS.  Based on the Paramount/Nick Movies’ picture Nacho Libre starring Jack Black, the new title is a comedy based wrestling game that uses a “photo puppetry” visual style to present the action including weird props, exaggerated moves and the like.  The game allows players to play as Nacho or 19 other luchadors, each with their own unique moves and style.  The game also offers six modes of play (e.g. single player, 2-on-2, wireless etc), as well as eight mini games available by using the touch screen option.

CiCi’s Pizza has launched two new online video games, Numberzerk and Kaplink, on its website ( www.cicispizza.com ).  Designed for kids and parents, the titles are math-based games and free for download for both PC and Mac users.  Founded in Texas in 1985, there are now 600+ CiCi’s Pizza restaurants in 26 states nationwide.

Baby Einstein Company has released Baby’s First Moves, its 22nd and newest DVD title.  Targeted to babies 6 months and up, Baby’s First Moves aims to support age appropriate development including clapping hands, rolling, reaching, crawling and walking.  Additionally, the DVD includes ways for parents to interact with their babies to support these activities.  The DVD can be viewed in English, Spanish or French.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Qubo, the new multi-platform kid targeted network, which airs in English and Spanish, has appointed two new members of its senior management team. Launched two months ago, qubo is a joint partnership of NBC Universal (airing on NBC and Telemundo), Scholastic, Corus Entertainment and Classic Media/Big Idea, and Ion Media Networks (which owns 51% of the network).

  • Rick Rodriguez has been named, President/GM.  Rodriguez, who will be initially based in LA, is responsible for the strategic and day-to-day operations of qubo.  Most recently Rodriguez established Island Dreamer Enterprises, a TV production and consulting firm, from which he oversaw the launch of Discovery Kids en Español and Discovery Travel & Living for the US Hispanic market, as well as the launch Discovery’s HD Channels in Europe and Asia.  Previously, he spent 10 of the last 20 years working for Discovery Communications, including serving as EVP/GM, Travel Channel (2003-04), and before that heading the creation of Discovery Kids network in Latin America and then across other international markets as EVP/Content.
  • Kerry J. Hughes joins qubo as its new SVP/Advertising Sales and Sponsorships.  A 25-yr veteran of TV sales and marketing, prior to coming to qubo, Hughes was National Sales Director/Advertising and Custom Publishing, Warner Bros./DC Comics and Mad Magazine.  Previously, Hughes was SVP/Sales and Marketing, Walt Disney Company/Disney ABC Kids Networks.  Hughes will be based out of qubo’s NY offices.

Kim Hatamiya has been upped to EVP/Marketing, Sony Pictures Television International.  Hatamiya oversees all of marketing efforts outside the US for SPTI lines of business, including distribution of movie and TV product to broadcasters, digital content providers and mobile carriers, international networks and local language production.  In addition, she will head all strategic marketing, advertising, publicity, talent relations, promotions, on-air and off-air creative services, interactive and Internet marketing, and research.  Hatamiya reports to Michael Grindon, President, SPTI.  Most recently, Hatamiya, who joined SPTI in spring 2003, was as SVP/Marketing.  Prior to SPTI, she was SVP and GM, Mindrocket Media/JP Kids, Inc.  Previously, Hatamiya was SVP/Marketing, Passport New Media, Inc. and before that she was SVP/Fox Kids Worldwide, where she is credited with launching Fox Kids UK and Fox Kids Latin America.

MTV Networks has given Marva Smalls the additional title and responsibilities of EVP/Global Inclusion Strategy.  In this new role, Smalls will oversee the company’s diversity and multicultural efforts.  Smalls, who will also become a member of the MTVN Sr. strategy team, will report to Judy McGrath, Chairman/CEO, MTVN.  Smalls will also continue in her current post as EVP/Public Affairs and Chief of Staff, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids & Family Group, where she reports to the President, Cyma Zarghami.

Fox Mobile Entertainment has appointed Andrew Stalbow VP/International.  Stalbow, who will be based in London, will be responsible for identifying and creating new distribution channels for Fox Mobile’s content in Europe and oversees the group’s European carrier relationships, collaborate with the carriers on new formats and business opportunities.  He will report to Mitch Feinman, SVP, Fox Mobile Entertainment.  Most recently, Stalbow toiled for the Vodafone Group in its business development division where he played a key role in Vodafone’s global entertainment efforts.
