Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 24, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

World Baseball Classic, Inc. announced that MLB Network would serve as the exclusive English-language telecast partner in the US for both the 2013 and 2017 World Baseball Classic tournaments. Next year, 39 games will be played in seven venues in four nations and territories from March 2 through March 19, 2013. MLB Network will televise all 39 games of the 2013 World Baseball Classic, including the Semi-Finals and Final taking place March 17th 19th at San Francisco’s AT&T Park and hosted by the San Francisco Giants. First round international venues will also include the Fukuoka Yahoo! Japan Dome (Fukuoka, Japan), Intercontinental Stadium (Taichung, Taiwan) and Hiram Bithorn Stadium (San Juan, Puerto Rico) while the Tokyo Dome (Tokyo, Japan) will host a second round pool.

On the Air

FOX Sports announced coverage plans for the 108th Major League Baseball’s World Series. Last season’s American Idol winner Phillip Phillips will perform the National Anthem at Game 1 with play-by-play announcer Joe Buck and analyst Tim McCarver calling their 15th World Series together. Erin Andrews serves as a field reporter for each game alongside MLB on FOX and FOXSports.com senior MLB writer Ken Rosenthal. This year’s broadcast will also feature the debut of the FOX Phantom Cam, which is capable of capturing up to 20,000 frames per second. Overall, 40 cameras will capture the action to this year’s Series. 

Monday night’s NLCS Game 7 on FOX marked the highest-rated and most-watched broadcast of the 2012 postseason, according to Nielsen numbers. The game, up against MNF as well as the Presidential Debate, drew a 4.9/7 with 8.1 million viewers in household fast-nationals. The seven-game NLCS on FOX averaged a 4.0/7 overall, up 38% over last year’s NLCS on TBS, but off pace from last year’s ALCS on FOX which averaged 4.4/8. St. Louis led all markets for Game 7 viewing with a 31.8/43 followed by San Francisco, which delivered a 27.5/46 rating/share. World Series Game 1 between the Tigers and Giants starts tonight on FOX with coverage beginning at 7:30p.

Around the dial, ESPN’s MNF telecast of the Bears victory over the Lions delivered a 6.6 US household rating for over 10.6 million viewers. In Chicago, the game delivered a 16.8 rating on ESPN and a 12.3 rating on WCIU-IND, for a combined 29.1 rating in the market. In Detroit, the game delivered a 7.3 rating on ESPN and a 15.1 rating on WXYZ-ABC, for a combined 22.4 rating in the market.

ESPN’s college football schedule this week will feature two Saturday night telecasts with Notre Dame/Oklahoma slated for ABC at 8p, while Mississippi St./Alabama will square off on ESPN at 8:30p.

Less than a week before the NBA season officially tips off, TNT detailed coverage plans for the beginning of the season with a pair of doubleheaders on Tuesday and Thursday of next week. Opening Night will feature defending NBA Champion Miami Heat hosting the Boston Celtics at 8p, followed Mavericks/Lakers at 10:30p. Marv Albert will call the Heat/Celtics game with analyst Steve Kerr and reporter Craig Sager. Kevin Harlan will provide commentary for Mavericks/Lakers with analyst Reggie Miller and reporter David Aldridge. The TNT NBA Tip-Off pregame show starts at 7p. Thursday features the Nets making their home debut against the Knicks at 7p, followed by Thunder/Spurs at 9:30p.
 
iN DEMAND revealed details for this year’s NBA League Pass subscription on digital cable for out-of-market games, which will launch with an eight-day free preview through Nov. 6. Features this year will include same-day replays, dual feeds, a mosaic channel, and a stats channel. 

ESPN Radio will feature the 2012 World Series with Dan Shulman and Orel Hershiser serving as ESPN Radio’s play-by-play commentator and analyst for their second Fall Classic. Jon Sciambi and Chris Singleton will offer pre- and post-World Series game analysis and interviews with Peter Pascarelli beginning at 7p from AT&T and Comerica Parks.

HRTV is programming a two-part series about Black Caviar, the undefeated Australian mare, starting on Friday, Oct. 26. The first half-hour show, titled Paint The Town Black, will debut at 8:30p on Friday, and the second, To Set Before a Queen, will be shown two days later on Sunday at 8:30p.

Aon P.L.C. announced that the company will become an official sponsor of NFL UK, as the league prepares to play its sixth regular-season games in the U.K. on Sunday, when the Rams play host to the Patriots at Wembley Stadium.

19-time English champions Manchester United are looking to boast its U.S. appeal, and will open an office on the East Coast to maximize commercial opportunities, according to the AP.

This is my kind of promotion. The Atlanta Hawks announced that the team will sponsor both the Northbound and Southbound tolls on GA 400 today from 7-9a in partnership with the State Road and Tollway Authority. As part of the promotion, all 50 cent, cashier and Cruise Card/Peach Pass lanes’ tolls will be paid for by the team. In addition, Harry the Hawk and the Atlanta Hawks Cheerleaders will be at the tolls handing out magnet game schedules, Hawks branded air fresheners and $50 Hawks Cards good towards the purchase of tickets to Hawks home games in November and December 2012.

HSBC extended its agreement to serve as title sponsor of the HSBC Women’s Champions event in Singapore for three more years, according to Golf Channel. The tournament is slated to be played Feb. 28-March 3 next year with the purse again locked in at $1.4 million.

Microsoft announced the debut of NBA Game Time, a new Xbox Live service for Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers. Features include: Live Games, Highlights and Replays; the latest news on favorite teams; stats and standings and a split screen function.

The NFL and USAA, the Official Military Appreciation Sponsor of the league, are encouraging fans to create a digital salute to honor current and former military personnel on behalf of their favorite NFL team through Nov. 26, 2012. The new initiative is designed to enable NFL teams to deepen their connection to the military community.
