Production on BBC America’s new original drama series Orphan Black has begun on ten one-hour episodes produced by Temple Street Productions. Tatiana Maslany (Cas & Dylan, Picture Day) stars in the lead role as Sarah, an outsider and orphan whose life changes after witnessing the suicide of a woman who looks just like her. Joining the cast is Maria Doyle Kennedy (The Tudors, Downton Abbey), Dylan Bruce (As the World Turns, The Bay) and Jordan Gavaris (Degrassi, Unnatural History). The series is filming on location and in studio in Toronto through February 2013. Ivan Schneeberg, David Fortier, Graeme Manson and John Fawcett serve as EPs on the drama which is co-created by Manson and Fawcett with Manson also as writer and Fawcett as director. Orphan Black will premiere in early 2013 as part of BBC America’s Supernatural Saturday programming block and in Canada on Bell Media’s SPACE. BBC Worldwide distributes the series worldwide. The series is produced by Temple Street Productions in association with BBC America and Bell Media.
Film actress Charlize Theron sold a Scottish Viking drama to ABC, reports THR. The Clan is set in medieval Scotland where the great clans battle each other and the Viking invaders. Terry George is involved as writer, director and EP on the project. Theron will also serve as an EP through her ABC Studios-based company Denver & Delilah. This project marks the third sale by Theron this development season with two other projects picked up by NBC: a modern-day take on the Hatfields & McCoys with John Glenn and a family drama Holiday with Gina Fattore.
Margaret Nagle (Boardwalk Empire) sold two projects to two different broadcast networks, cites THR. The first is a modern-day Sense and Sensibility for CBS set in the world of medicine where three different but devoted sisters have their lives turned upside down when the father who abandoned them as kids returns, seeking more than forgiveness. Nagle will write and serve as EP with Warner Bros. Television producing. CBS has given the project a script order. The other project is the crime drama Paradise Falls for FOX produced by Universal Television Studios. Paradise Falls is about a down-on-his-luck documentary filmmaker sent by a crime reality show to cover a trial involving a terrible crime that has engulfed the local town of Paradise Falls, PA. The filmmaker uncovers corruption and deceit everywhere he looks and also discovers the case is a smoke screen for the town’s twisted ambition for fame and profit. Nagle will write the script and be the EP; Joe Berlinger will serve as co-EP. Paradise Falls is also loosely based on the Berlinger’s HBO documentary series about the West Memphis Three who were wrongly convicted of murder.
Jane Fonda will star in a new ABC comedy scheduled to premiere in 2013. The project is tentatively titled Now What? from Pushing Daisies writer Abby Gewanter. The plot is about a young woman who tears into her mother using a public blog post listing the reasons she hates her. The mother (Fonda) ends up moving in with her daughter in order to settle their differences.
Showtime’s comedy series House of Lies added Larenz Tate (Rescue Me) and Nia Long (Third Watch) in recurring roles for season two. Tate will play Marty’s (Don Cheadle) younger, less ambitious activist brother while Long will play a fellow consultant and former classmate of Marty’s who becomes an adversary. Production on the second season commences in Los Angeles next month and Showtime has set the premiere date for January 13 at 10p.
A new factual drama co-produced by the BBC and SCIENCE cast William Hurt (Altered States, Children of a Lesser God) in the role as US physicist Richard Feynman, who uncovered the truth behind the space shuttle Challenger’s tragic disaster in 1986. Other confirmed cast members include Bruce Greenwood, Brian Dennehy and Joanne Whalley among others. Filming begins this month with the project co-produced by BBC Scotland Science and Science Channel. The broadcast will air on BBC Two and SCIENCE in 2013.
Alysia Reiner (Law & Order: CI) landed the recurring role of Natalie Figuerosa on Netflix’s series Orange in the New Black.
