Cynopsis: Sports
10/10/12

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 10, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

CBS Sports is getting back on the court, announcing plans for its 32nd consecutive season of college basketball coverage with 42 games on deck. The network’s season will tip off on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 12:30p with a Baylor/Kentucky matchup. Jim Nantz and Clark Kellogg will lead the announce team for the fifth consecutive year. This year’s highlights will include 40 men’s contests and two women’s games featuring teams from top conferences including the Big Ten, Big East, ACC, SEC, Pac-12, Big 12 and Atlantic 10. Other key matchups will include Kansas/Ohio St. on Dec. 22, Kentucky/Louisville on Dec. 29, Maryland/Duke on Jan. 26 and Michigan St./Indiana on Jan. 27.

On the Air

Andrea Kremer is joining NFL Network, where she will serve the chief correspondent in a newly-formed unit dedicated to covering NFL player health and safety issues. She will also contribute other reports and features on major topics across NFL Network programming. Kremer recently served in the sideline and feature reporter role for the Sunday Night Football on NBC, for whom she has also covered the last three Olympic Games. In addition, producer Arash Ghadishah joined NFL Network to work with Kremer and other reporters on player health and safety coverage. Kremer will continue her work as a correspondent for HBO’s Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel.

Going against the MLB postseason, ESPN’s Monday Night Football matchup drew a 9.0 household rating with an average of 14,047,000 viewers, according to Nielsen. In Houston, the game delivered a 12.0 rating on ESPN and a 22.4 rating on KHOU-CBS, for a combined 34.4 rating in the market. In New York, the game delivered a 9.5 rating on ESPN and a 4.3 rating on WWOR-IND, for a combined 13.8 rating in the market. Through the first five weeks of the NFL season with six games under its belt, ESPN’s MNF is averaging a 9.0 rating this season with 13,981,000 viewers, to mark a ratings boost of 4% over the same point last season.

TBS’s coverage of the 2012 Major League Baseball postseason is up 15% in household rating and up 14% among total viewers, compared with the first three days of the postseason last year, per Nielsen numbers. The network’s telecasts are averaging a 2.3 U.S. household rating (compared to a. 2.0 rating a year ago) and 3,628,000 total viewers. In addition, coverage is up in demos with a 15% spike among men 25-54 and adults 25-54, as well as an 8% rise among men 18-49 and 7% in adults 18-49.

Last weekend’s UFC on FX 5 telecast averaged 1.1 million viewers for the Oct. 5 main card. That is off pace from the 1.3 million average for the four previous specials.

After a string of raids and defections, the Western Athletic Conference made some moves to survive, announcing that California State University, Bakersfield and Utah Valley University will join the league starting in July 1, 2013. The WAC will continue to explore the possibility of bringing additional members to the league as it makes the transition from an FBS conference to a non-football playing Division I conference.

With the closest points race in series history in tow, SPEED is finding a ratings uplift, as last weekend’s Talladega race rose 31% over year ago numbers with a .84 score. Pre-race series NCWTS Setup also felt the year-to-year ratings growth, jumping 38% above last season’s equivalent weekend.

On a programming front, NBC Sports Network series NFL Turning Point will focus on “Sunday night’s Saints-Chargers game, and Drew Brees’ historic evening in New Orleans; Colts quarterback Andrew Luck’s outstanding performance against the Packers; and a look at how Tom Brady and the Patriots offensive attack proved to be too much for the Denver Broncos.” The episode runs Wednesday at 10p.

World Fishing Network announced an all-new original series, Beyond the Cast with JP DeRose, that will debut in January. Each of the 13 episodes of the show will pull together a panel of experts to test and evaluate some of the best-in-class fishing gear, including rods, reels, lures and accessories.

Broadcast Company of the Americas announced a three year extension with ESPN Radio that will continue a partnership with ESPN Radio 1700 AM and XX 1090 AM through 2015 in San Diego. The agreement also allows BCA Radio to access exclusive local and national sports content to be used on ESPN 1700’s website. Across the country, ESPN Radio also bolstered its presence in Florida with the launch on WDAE-AM in Tampa on Oct. 1 as well as on ESPN 580 set to debut in Orlando on November 12.
