~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

NBC is developing a comedy series based on Sally Koslow’s novel, Slouching Toward Adulthood.  The single-camera comedy, produced by 20th Television and 3 Arts is about a blended family where adult children are still living at home.  Kat Coiro will write the script and serve as EP along with 3 Arts’ Oly Obst, David Miner and Christy Fletcher.

A surfing drama, The Break was given script orders by ABC, reports THR.  The drama is set in the world of Santa Cruz surfing competitions.  Writer Elizabeth Chandler (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) is penning the script for ABC Studios with Gary Randall and Tim Bogart is involved as EP through Boardwalk Entertainment.  The family drama is about 16-year old Mia Walker, who has a troubled, mysterious past and is sent to live in the surfing town with a father she’s never known.  The ensemble drama will explore the personal lives and relationships of a group of young adults in the close-knit community where surfing is everything.

Mila Kunis is set to executive produce a period drama for The CW titled Meridian Hills.  The drama is set in 1972 and explores the women’s liberation movement.  Sydney Sidner will write the drama and will also be an EP along with Chris Keyser, Kunis and the Tannenbaum Co.’s Eric and Kim Tannenbaum.  Lisa Sterbakov (Robot Chicken) will also be an EP in addition to Kunis’ Black Swan managers Cami Curtis and Susan Curtis.  Meridian Hills is set in a Midwest country club during a time with the Equal Rights Amendment was just beginning.  The plot centers on a young, newly married woman who joins the Junior League and discovers an eclectic group of other young women who become allies in her quest to change the system.

Production has commenced in Los Angeles this week on ABC Family’s drama series pilot The Fosters starring Teri Polo, Sherri Saum, Jake T. Austin, Hayden Byerly, David Lambert, Danny Nucci and Cierra Ramirez and newcomer Maia Mitchell.  The Fosters is a one-hour drama about a multi-ethnic family consisting of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms.  The series is produced by Nuyorican Productions, Inc. and Prodco, Inc.

Also on ABC Family, three more have been cast for its multi-camera comedy, Phys EdSamm Levine (Freaks and Geeks), Sunkrish Bala (Shameless) and Chelsea Harris (guest star on Grey’s Anatomy) have joined the pilot from David H. Steinberg.  Phys Ed was picked up to pilot in September and is about Ed (Ryan Sypek) a high school jock who returns to teach at his former alma mater only to find that even though he has changed, nothing at the school has changed.  Levine will play Matt Nealy, a nerdy chemistry teacher; Bala will play Alan Rapaport, an English teacher who likes being the alpha male at the school; and Harris will play Wendy Kleinman, the attractive history teacher and cheerleading coach.  The series is being produced by Prodco.
