Just before the holidays, NBC will premiere the new trivia game show Who’s Still Standing? in a week-long run from December 19 through December 22 at 8p before the show moves to its regular time slot on Mondays starting December 26 at 8p through January 30.  NBC acquired the Israeli format from Armoza Formats early this year and Universal Television, in association with Armoza Formats and July-August Productions, produced nine episodes hosted by Ben Bailey (Cash Cab).  The game show, developed by Lisa Shiloach-Uzrad and Amit Stratener of July-August Productions is in production on season three debuting next spring on Israel’s Channel 10.

ABC is also getting into the game show action this holiday season with the premiere of You Deserve It hosted by The Bachelor’s Chris Harrison and co-hosted by Brooke Burns.  The six-episode game show from the producers of Deal or No Deal and Secret Millionaire, opens November 21 at 901p and features contestants playing for money on behalf of someone who deserves the winnings.  Kinetic Content produces You Deserve It.

Sketch comedy series In the Flow with Affion Crockett has been cancelled by FOX after airing six episodes this fall. 

A new series on HISTORY delves into the high-stakes collectibles market when Real Deal premieres November 25 at 9p.  The 10-episode half-hour series watches as dealers and sellers negotiate the best price for a collectible piece of history.  Tensions mount to see if the seller takes the dealers’ offer or will they head to auction in hopes of a better price? The series is produced by Zodiak USA for HISTORY. Real Deal is based on the UK series Dickinson’s Real Deal a format from Zodiak Media Group (ZMG) which is produced by RDF Television (part of ZMG) and is currently in its seventh season on ITV1 and has been picked up for an eighth season. 

John Walsh’s series America’s Most Wanted is back with a 25th fugitives.  America’s Most Wanted is produced by Walsh Productions and is distributed by Twentieth Television, Inc.

New culinary reality show Chef Roble & Co. joins Bravo’s lineup starting December 4 at 10p.  Chef Roble Ali has cooked for the rich and famous and now he runs his own high-end catering company in New York City which serves up a new set of stresses and drama.  The series is produced for Bravo by Red Line Films.

Hidden camera comedy series Impractical Jokers is set to debut December 15 with back-to-back episodes at 10p and 1030p on truTV.  In this original series, four childhood buddies, Brian “Q” Quinn, James “Murr” Murray, Joe Gatto and Sal Vulcano have challenged each other to outrageous public dares and now, to find out who is the best, they will compete at a new level via hidden camera. NorthSouth Productions produces the series. 

Taking an early bow, HBO’s upcoming racetrack drama Luck, headlined by Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte and Dennis Farina among others will air a preview on December 11 at 10p following the sophomore season finale of Boardwalk Empire.  Luck will make its official debut on HBO sometime in January though no specific date has been set.

Two new shows on tap for MSG Network:

  • Knicks Greatest Rivalries highlights the epic battles from the early 1990s between the Knicks and their staunchest rivals including the Bulls, Celtics, Pacers and Heat. This 20-part series presented in two-hour episodes is hosted by Knicks radio play-by-play talent Spero Dedes and features former Knicks Derek Harper and Anthony Mason.  Premieres November 20.
  • First Person will shine a light on one legendary player or entertainer as they reminisce about a vintage performance in their own words. First Person debuts this winter.

Predicting a second season, TLC is moving forward with more of Long Island Medium featuring average mom and psychic, Theresa Caputo.  TLC okayed 12 new half-hour episodes for season two scheduled to debut in March 2012.  During its first season, Long Island Medium averaged 1.3 million total viewers. Magilla Entertainment produces the series for TLC.

TeleFutura’s new late night talk show Noche de Perros (Guys Night Out) opened on Halloween at 11p and attracted an average of 237,000 total viewers and 167,000 among A18-49.

Gilbert Cates, producer of 14 Academy Awards telecasts over the span of 1990 to 2008, died Tuesday at UCLA where he was a professor.  Over his stellar career, Mr. Cates has been a director and producer of films, television and the stage.  He additionally served two terms as President of the Directors Guild of America from 1983 to 1987.  Further highlights of his career include choosing new hosts for the Oscar telecasts such as Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, Chris Rock, Whoopi Goldberg, David Letterman and Jon Stewart.  Mr. Cates won an Emmy Award for the 1991 Oscar telecast hosted by Mr. Crystal, his second turn as host.  Mr. Cates also received Emmy nominations for directing the TV movies Consenting Adult in 1984 and Do You Know the Muffin Man? in 1989.  He also produced and directed the musical/variety series Hootenanny in the mid-1960s and a slew of other TV movies and TV variety specials along with Patty Duke’s life story depicted in Call Me Anna. Mr. Cates’ film directing credits include The Promise (1979), Oh, God! Book II (1980), The Last Married Couple in America (1980) and Backfire (1988). Mr. Cates is survived by his wife, Judith Reichman, four children and two stepchildren.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

NEO Broadcast America, Inc., part of Nimbus Communications Ltd. is teaming with Time Warner Cable to launch the 24-hour sports channel, NEO Cricket in New York City.  NEO Cricket will offer live coverage of all international and domestic cricket matches played in India in addition to other events such as the IPL, Asia Cup and other original productions.

In a landmark deal for the Norwegian formats industry, Nordic World announced its dating program Babes on the Bus with 40 eps/25 min has been optioned by Endemol.  The deal allows Endemol to option the format globally, excluding the Nordic territories and France where Babes on the Bus is currently under option to TF1.  Babes on the Bus was produced by Norwegian independent company Monster Entertainment, part of the Nordic independent production group NICE Entertainment, and is currently a hit for TVNorge in primetime.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

A one-hour original scripted legal drama titled Rectify was approved by Sundance Channel.  Created, written and executive produced by Academy Award-winner Ray McKinnon (The Accountant), Rectify marks the first wholly-owned Sundance Channel scripted series production.  The six-episode drama is about Daniel Holden, a former Death Row inmate, who after being released from jail following new DNA evidence that overturned his murder/rape charge, returns to his hometown where the crime occurred and where many still believe he is guilty.  Daniel must learn how to live again and those around him must decide if they are going to give him a second chance.  Rectify will premiere simultaneously on Sundance Channel in the US and on Sundance Channel Global worldwide in Europe, Asia and North America.  Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein of Gran Via are also on board as executive producers; Johnson and Bernstein are producers on AMC’s Breaking Bad.

Production is underway in Los Angeles for a fourth season of TNT’s drama series Southland.  From producer John Wells and Warner Bros. Television, TNT will premiere the new season of Southland on January 17 at 10p. 

TNT tapped Summer Glau for its new pilot Scent of the Missing starring opposite Tricia Helfer and Eric Winter.  Glau will play a member of the K-9 Search and Rescue team. 

Michelle Trachtenberg is making a comeback on The CW’s Gossip Girl, reports TVLine.  Trachtenberg will reprise her role of Georgina Sparks over multiple episodes starting with the show’s 100th ep.

Casting Call: The producers behind ABC’s Supernanny and Bravo’s Bethenny Getting Married are casting for a new docu-series about married couples that desperately want to spice up their love life.  The producers are seeking married couples living in the greater Los Angeles area who are attractive, have outgoing, dynamic personalities and are willing to tell their story.   Saturday A18-49 Analysis:  ABC scored a win Saturday at 2.7/9 with the A18-49 demo, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, ABC’s college football double-header won with a 1.9/7 followed by FOX’s America’s Most Wanted Special at 1.5/5.  Same scenario at 9p with ABC’s Saturday Night Football delivered a #1 standing at 2.1/7 and FOX’s America’s Most Wanted was #2 at 1.5/5.  ABC finished a clean sweep at 10p with the Clemson at Georgia Tech game at 2.7/9 and CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery was next at 1.3/4.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  NBC ruled Sunday and the A18-49 viewers with a 7.9/20, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  CBS was in charge of the 7p hour with 60 Minutes at 4.5/12 followed by NBC’s Football Night in America Part 2 at 3.2/9.  NBC took over at 8p with Football Night in America Part 3 and Sunday Night Football at an average of 6.9/18, ABC’s new drama Once Upon A Time was #2 at 3.9/9 and CBS’ 60 Minutes and The Amazing Race with an average of 3.4/8 was third.  Also during the 8p hour, FOX debuted a new season of Allen Gregory at 2.4/6 at 830p.  NBC’s Sunday Night Football was supreme through 9p at 9.8/23 and ABC’s Desperate Housewives took second place at 3.1/7.  At 10p, NBC scored a final huge win of the night with the end of the Dallas at Philadelphia game at 8.9/22 with CBS’ The Good Wife and CSI: Miami at an average of 2.1/5 in second place.

Monday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS conjured up winning ratings Monday night with a 3.8/10 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen.  Halloween primetime opened at 8p with CBS’ comedies How I Met Your Mother and 2 Broke Girls topping with an average of 4.3/13 and a tie occurred for second place between the average of ABC’s Scared Shrekless and Dancing with the Stars and NBC’s Terra Nova both delivering a 2.1/6.  CBS continued to scare up #1 ratings during 9p with its sitcoms Two and a Half Men and Mike & Molly at an average of 4.2/11 and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars held the second place beat at 3.0/8 with FOX’s House coming in third at 2.5/6.  CBS stirred up the final win at 10p with Hawaii Five-O posting a 3.0/8, ABC’s Castle was #2 at 2.7/7 and the launch of NBC’s new Rock Center with Brian Williams filed a third place showing at 1.0/3.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Longtime marketing executive Eleo Hensleigh was named SVP/Marketing and Communications at Travel Channel where she will supervise the consumer marketing, creative services and communications departments in addition to marketing for all the network’s digital assets and more.  One of Eleo’s key duties is to oversee the marketing and communication efforts for such Travel Channel shows as Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, Man v. Food Nation, Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern and Ghost Adventures as well as the new series launch campaigns for Bourdain’s upcoming original series The Layover launching in November and Hidden City premiering in December.  Before her new appointment, Eleo served as CMO at ION Media Networks in New York.  Congrats on your new position, Eleo!

Program executive Doug Vaughan inked a new two-year deal with NBC and was appointed SVP/Special Programs and Late Night.  In his new capacity, Doug will supervise NBC’s Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Last Call with Carson Daly.  Based in New York, Doug reports to Paul Telegdy, President/Alternative and Late Night Programming at NBC.  Paul oversees The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on the West Coast.

Independent studio, Entertainment One (eOne) elevated Lisa Wookey to VP/Marketing and Communications for its television division, effective immediately.  Lisa will continue to spearhead marketing and communications efforts on behalf of the studio’s original programming including The Firm, Rookie Blue, Call Me Fitz, Hell on Wheels and Haven.  Lisa also oversees the division’s international brand strategy and eOne’s presence at all international sales markets and events.  Lisa is based in Toronto.
