Good morning, it’s Wednesday, November 28, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
A major U.S. wireless carrier took an important first step toward opening its network. Verizon Wireless announced it will open up to enable customers to use mobile devices and software not sold by the carrier. Verizon will commission a $20 million testing lab to approve third party devices and publish standards allowing developers to integrate applications within their network. The move begs the question whether or not Verizon will join the Google-led Open Handset Alliance and integrate with the Android operating system, steps T-Mobile has already taken.
The U.K.’s BBC, ITV and Channel 4 are forming an internet-based VOD joint venture, tentatively titled Kangaroo, with a launch expected in 2008. Apple charges $99/year for its 10 GB .Mac service.
Brightcove is shutting down its user generated Brightcove.tv platform as of Dec. 18, part of its evolution toward focusing on singularly serving the online video needs of its corporate clients.
Social network viral media player creator Nabbr signed agreements with EMI, Universal, Sony BMG and Warner Music to feature 10 new music videos on its music widget each week. More than 160 social network content sites have signed on to join Nabbr’s network to publish directly to personal profiles on MySpace and Facebook.
